A 19-week-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was examined because of multiple raised pruritic skin lesions along the dorsal head and back. Histopathology of biopsies of the lesions detected nodular pyogranulomatous dermatitis with vasculitis and necrosis, leading to a suspicion of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Postmortem examination revealed gross lesions consistent with FIP. Histopathologic lesions and positive immunohistochemical staining for feline coronavirus in multiple tissues, including the skin, confirmed the diagnosis of FIP. The current case was similar to previous cases

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led the medical and scientific community to address questions surrounding the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of COVID-19; however, relevant clinical models outside of humans are still lacking. In felines, a ubiquitous coronavirus, described as feline coronavirus (FCoV), can present as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)-a leading cause of mortality in young cats that is characterized as a severe, systemic inflammation. The diverse extrapulmonary signs of FIP and rapidly progressive disease course, coupled with a clos

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is characterised by the presence of systemic inflammation accompanied by oxidative stress. Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a negative acute phase reactant produced by the liver. A paraoxon-based method has been validated to measure PON-1 activity in feline serum. The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of PON-1 activity as a biomarker to discriminate FIP from other diseases with similar clinical signs. Of 159 cats enrolled, 71 were healthy, 34 had FIP and 54 had another disease but presented with clinical signs that could be consistent with FIP. PON

BACKGROUND: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal immune-mediated disease in cat, caused by mutated feline coronavirus (FCoV). Due to its difficulties in diagnosis, FIP is sometimes underdiagnosed. Therefore, several laboratory procedures were performed to gain high index suspicion of FIP. However, through several laboratory findings, not only FIP but also SEZ infection was confirmed in this case.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A-year-old male, domestic cat was admitted to Veterinary Medicine Clinical Pathology Laboratory, Universitas Gadjah Mada, for further effusion examination due to its high

INTRODUCTION: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) occurs most commonly in multi-cat environments such as animal shelters. FIP is often suspected based on compatible history, signalment, physical examination, and hematological and biochemical findings. Increased diagnostic certainty requires additional diagnostic imaging and laboratory testing that may be out of reach for resource-poor caregivers and organizations. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate response to GS-441524 (GS) therapy of cats diagnosed with FIP using a spectrum of care approach relying on physical examinat

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) exists as two different genotypes, FCoV type I and II, each including two biotypes, feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) and feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), the latter being a virulent variant originating from the former virus. Recently, two amino acid substitutions, M1058L and S1060A, within the spike protein have been associated to the FECV/FIPV virulence change. In this study, we have analysed the frequency of detection of such mutations in FIPV and FECV strains circulating in Italian cats and obtained information about their evolutionary relationships wit

OBJECTIVE: Medial shoulder instability (MSI) is a frequent cause of thoracic limb lameness in dogs, yet its diagnosis remains challenging, with arthroscopic examination considered the gold standard. The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic sensitivity of preoperative shoulder abduction angle measurements and MRI findings for detecting MSI in dogs with arthroscopically confirmed diagnoses.
ANIMALS AND PROCEDURE: Medical records from AniCura Jeløy Dyresykehus (Moss, Norway) (2017 to 2024) were retrospectively reviewed for dogs with unilateral MSI diagnosed via arthroscopy. Inclu

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal systemic disease of cats, which is caused by FIP virus (FIPV), a virulent biotype of feline coronavirus (FCoV). In a small number of cats infected with feline enteric coronavirus (FECV), virus mutation may emerge that enable infection of monocytes and macrophages, leading to the development of FIP. This cell tropism shift, along with impaired T cell response, plays a critical role in FIP development. Programmed cell death protein (PD-1) and its ligands (PD-L1 and PD-L2) play crucial roles in immune responses as an immune checkpoint system. The PD-

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), one of the most important lethal infections of cats, is caused by feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), the high-virulence biotype of feline coronaviruses (FCoVs). FIPVs are suggested to emerge from feline enteric coronaviruses (FECVs) by acquiring mutations in specific genes in the course of persistent infections. Although numerous studies identified mutations predicted to be responsible for the FECV-FIPV biotype switch, the presumed roles of specific genetic changes in FIP pathogenesis have not been confirmed experimentally. Reverse genetics systems

Investigating type I feline coronaviruses (FCoVs) in tissue culture is critical for understanding the basic virology, pathogenesis, and virus-host interactome of these important veterinary pathogens. This has been a perennial challenge as type I FCoV strains do not easily adapt to cell culture. Here we characterize replication kinetics and plaque formation of a model type I strain FIPV Black in Fcwf-4 cells established at Cornell University (Fcwf-4 CU). We determined that maximum virus titers (>107 pfu/mL) were recoverable from infected Fcwf-4 CU cell-free supernatant at 20 h post-infection. T

Cryosections of organs and smears from membrana nicitians from cats suspected of having spontaneous infection with feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), were investigated using an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IIFA) in order to detect the presence of feline corona virus (FCV). In 113 cats, from each of which six organs were screened, virus antigen was found most often in membrana nicitians and lung. Out of these animals an additional six organs from a group of 30 cats were screened. In these cats membrana nicitians, parotid gland, thymus and apex of caecum had the highest incidence

Among feline coronaviruses (FCoVs), feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) is a ubiquitous enteric pathogen in feline populations and responsible for asymptomatic to mild enteric disease. However, in a small number of cats, viral mutations within the host combined with impaired host immune responses may lead to feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a fatal, systemic infection. Programmed death-1 (PD-1) is a major immune-checkpoint protein expressed on activated T cells, and its engagement by the ligands PD-L1 and PD-L2 on target cells leads to suppression of T-cell activity. Previously, we found tha

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a lethal, viral-induced immune-mediated disease that remains a challenge for diagnosis and treatment in cats. Proteomic profiling, which analyzes the protein content of biological samples, offers the potential to identify novel biomarkers that could improve the diagnosis and management of FIP. This study aims to assess the serum proteome and identify proteins that differentiate healthy cats from cats diagnosed with effusive FIP using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). A total of 30 cats diagnosed with effusive FIP and

Haematology, antibody titers and serum protein electrophoresis from 48 cats (34 effusive and 14 noneffusive forms) affected with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) were studied and compared with those of 20 healthy cats. In the effusive form, antibody titers and protein electrophoresis in the effusions were analyzed. The distribution of the immune cells and of the virus in FIP lesions were also investigated immunohistochemically with the avidin-biotin complex (ABC) method, using antibodies against the FIP virus (FIPV), myelomonocytic (MAC387) and lymphoid (CD3, CD4 and CD8 for T-cells and IgM

ObjectivesCurrent antiviral therapy for feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) has limited availability and can be cost-prohibitive. The nucleoside analogue EIDD-1931 is an effective inhibitor against FIP virus serotype I and II in vitro. Our objective was to determine whether EIDD-1931 is an effective treatment option for cats with naturally occurring FIP.MethodsA prospective clinical trial was conducted with nine client-owned cats diagnosed with effusive or non-effusive FIP including neurological involvement. Cats were administered EIDD-1931 orally twice daily for 12 weeks. A complete response

Type-II feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV-II) is a lethal alphacoronavirus, whose high homology with the human coronavirus CCoV-HuPn-2018 carries the risk of potential zoonotic FIPV-II transmission to humans. FIPV-II infects felids using cat aminopeptidase N (cAPN) as its cell-entry receptor, but the molecular details remain unclear. Here, we resolved cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of the spike (S) trimer of a representative FIPV-II strain 79-1146 (FIPV-1146), and of its complex with cAPN. The reconstructions reveal structural transitions of the S protein between the "st

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a severe viral disease with a very high fatality rate. GS-441524 is an adenosine analogue that acts as an antiviral and has shown promise in FIP treatment. However, its commercialization in some regions is not yet authorized. To evaluate the efficacy of GS-441524 based on the published literature, a systematic review was conducted. This systematic review was conducted using PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for studies published from 2018 onwards. Following PRISMA guidelines, 11 studies (totaling 650 FIP cases treated with GS-441524 alone or in co

Background: The cationic amphiphilic drug U18666A inhibits the proliferation of type I FIPV in vitro. In this study, we evaluated the in vivo antiviral effects of U18666A by administering it to SPF cats challenged with type I FIPV. Methods: Ten SPF cats were randomly assigned to two experimental groups. FIPV KU-2 were inoculated intraperitoneally to cats. The control group was administered PBS, and the U18666A-treated group was administered U18666A subcutaneously at 2.5 mg/kg on day 0, and 1.25 mg/kg on days 2 and 4 after viral inoculation. Results: Two of the five control cats administered PB

SARS-CoV-2 has radically changed our lives causing hundreds of thousands of victims worldwide and influencing our lifestyle and habits. Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a disease of felids caused by the feline coronaviruses (FCoV). FIP has been considered irremediably deadly until the last few years. Being one of the numerous coronaviruses that are well known in veterinary medicine, information on FCoV could be of interest and might give suggestions on pathogenic aspects of SARS-CoV-2 that are still unclear. The authors of this paper describe the most important aspects of FIP and COVID-1
