Effects of magnetite on microbially driven nitrate reduction processes in groundwater.

Nitrate is a common pollutant in the aquatic environment. Denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) are the main reduction processes of nitrate. In the relatively closed sediment environment, the competitive interaction of these two nitrate reduction determines whether the ecosystem removes or retains nitrogen. In the process of NO3--N bioreduction, Magnetite, which is a common mineral present in soil and other sediments can play a crucial role. However, it is still not clear whether magnetite promotes or inhibits NO3--N bioreduction. In this paper, the effect of m

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 dissimilatory reduction of ferrihydrite to highly enhance mineral transformation and reactive oxygen species production in redox-fluctuating environments.

Diverse paths generated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) can mediate contaminant transformation and fate in the soil/aquatic environments. However, the pathways for ROS production upon the oxygenation of redox-active ferrous iron minerals are underappreciated. Ferrihydrite (Fh) can be reduced to produce Fe(II) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a representative strain of dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB). The microbial reaction formed a spent Fh product named mr-Fh that contained Fe(II). Material properties of mr-Fh were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron micro

Core-shell polygalacturonate magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization, and functionalities.

This work aims to synthesize polygalacturonate-based magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (INP-polyGalA). The synthesis consists of the diffusion of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ at a molar ratio of 1:2 through polyGalA solution followed by the addition of an alkaline solution. To form individual nanoparticle materials, the polyGalA concentration needs to be below its overlapping concentration (C*). The synthesized materials (INP-polyGalA) contain about 45% of organic compound (polyGalA), and they have an average particle size ranging from 10 to 50 nm as estimated by several techniques (DLS, TEM and AFM) an

Abiotic reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethylenes by iron-bearing soil minerals. 1. Pyrite and magnetite.

Abiotic reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethylenes (tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), cis-dichloroethylene (cis-DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC)) by pyrite and magnetite was characterized in a batch reactor system. Dechlorination kinetics was adequately described by a modified Langmuir-Hinshelwood model that includes the effect of a decreasing reductive capacity of soil mineral. The kinetic rate constant for the reductive dechlorination of target organics at reactive sites of soil minerals was in the range of 0.185 (+/- 0.023) to 1.71 (+/- 0.06) day(-1). The calculated sp

Stable Magnetic Relaxation Switch Sensor Based on Fe3O4@Gel for Ultrafast Detection of Cd2.

To overcome the dual challenges of signal instability and prolonged detection in conventional magnetic relaxation switching (MRS) systems, a novel Fe3O4-encapsulated alginate hydrogel nanocomposite (Fe3O4@Gel) sensor was designed for rapid screening of the cadmium ion. Compared with the traditional Fe3O4-based sensors, the Fe3O4 was embedded in the gel network framework to avoid magnetic field-induced aggregation, which helped to improve the stability of MRS. On the other hand, compared with MRS based on gel, the Fe3O4 accelerated the relaxation process of water molecules inside the gel, obtai

The use of ferumoxytol for high-resolution vascular imaging and troubleshooting for abdominal allografts.

Ferumoxytol is an ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide which has been used as an off-label intravenous contrast agent for MRI. Unlike gadolinium-based contrast agents, ferumoxytol remains in the intravascular space with a long half-life of 14-21 h. During the first several hours, it acts as a blood-pool agent and has minimal parenchymal enhancement. Studies have shown adequate intravascular signal for up to 72 h after initial contrast bolus. Ferumoxytol has been shown to be safe, even in patients with renal failure. Ferumoxytol has shown promise in a variety of clinical settings. The exquis

Carbon dots decorated magnetite nanocomposite obtained using yerba mate useful for remediation of textile wastewater through a photo-Fenton treatment: Ilex paraguariensis as a platform of environmental interest-part 2.

Two carbon dots (CD) with diameters of 4.9 ± 1.5 and 4.1 ± 1.2 nm were successfully synthesized through an acid ablation route with HNO3 or H2SO4, respectively, using Ilex paraguariensis as raw material. The CD were used to produce magnetite-containing nanocomposites through two different routes: hydrothermal and in situ. A thorough characterization of the particles by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates that all

Size and growth rate dependent structural diversification of Fe3O4/CdS anisotropic nanocrystal heterostructures.

To better understand the growth mechanism leading to enhanced anisotropy in nanocrystal heterostructures synthesized from nearly spherical seeds, we have examined various factors that contribute to structural diversification in Fe(3)O(4)/CdS systems. Pseudoseparation of nucleation and growth allows us to quantify how the number of heterojunctions formed varies with concentration and the size of the seed nanocrystals. A careful examination of the size dependence of the maximum number of CdS particles that can nucleate per seed nanocrystal suggests strain induced limitations. By increasing the g

Engineering Magnetic Nanoclusters for Highly Efficient Heating in Radio-Frequency Nanowarming.

Effective thawing of cryopreserved samples requires rapid and uniform heating. This is achievable through nanowarming, an approach that heats magnetic nanoparticles by using alternating magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate the synthesis and surface modification of magnetic nanoclusters for efficient nanowarming. Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoclusters with an optimal diameter of 58 nm exhibit a high specific absorption rate of 1499 W/g Fe under an alternating magnetic field at 43 kA/m and 413 kHz, more than twice that of commercial iron oxide cores used in prior nanowarming studies. Surface modificatio

Isolation and cultivation of a novel sulfate-reducing magnetotactic bacterium belonging to the genus Desulfovibrio.

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) synthesize magnetosomes composed of membrane-enveloped magnetite (Fe3O4) and/or greigite (Fe3S4) nanoparticles in the cells. It is known that the magnetotactic Deltaproteobacteria are ubiquitous and inhabit worldwide in the sediments of freshwater and marine environments. Mostly known MTB belonging to the Deltaproteobacteria are dissimilatory sulfate-reducing bacteria that biomineralize bullet-shaped magnetite nanoparticles, but only a few axenic cultures have been obtained so far. Here, we report the isolation, cultivation and characterization of a dissimilatory s

Enhanced CO2 capture efficiency applying amine-based nano magnetite/sulfinol-M nano solvents at high pressures.

Recently, extensive researches were performed on carbon dioxide (CO2) capture using nano solvents. In this study, three different modified magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), including Fe3O4-Proline (Fe3O4-P), Fe3O4-Lysine (Fe3O4-L), and Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2 NPs were produced to alter and enhance the properties of Fe3O4 NPs for CO2 capture in sulfinol-M as a base solvent. CO2 capture experiments were carried out in a high-pressure batch apparatus in which CO2 absorbed into sulfinol/nano-sulfinol. The influences of NP type, NP loading, and gas phase pressure on CO2 capture were studied. Based on the obtain

Magnetite enhances As immobilization during nitrate reduction and Fe(II) oxidation by Acidovorax sp. strain BoFeN1.

Arsenic (As) cycling in groundwater is commonly coupled to the biogeochemical cycling of iron (Fe) and the associated transformation of Fe minerals present. Numerous laboratory studies suggested that Fe minerals can act as nucleation sites for further crystal growth and as catalysts for abiotic Fe(II) oxidation. In view of the widespread existence of magnetite in anoxic environments where As is often dissolved, we firstly exploited magnetite to enhance As immobilization during nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation (NRFO) induced by Acidovorax sp. strain BoFeN1, a mixotrophic nitrate-reducing Fe(II

A proposed synergetic mechanism for metal fume fever involving ZnO and Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

Metal fumes fever (MFF) is an inflammatory condition, whose mechanism is yet unclear, associated with the inhalation of metal fumes, particularly zinc. In this study we investigate experimentally the hypothesis of a two-step mechanism of MFF onset: (1) the photocatalytic production of airborne hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via ZnO and (2) the production of hydroxyl radicals (HOׄ) through Fenton reaction via magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. Photocatalysis and Fenton reaction products were measured using a multiscattering-enhanced absorbance device and assessing the degradation of bromophenol blue wi

Simultaneous degradation of the anticancer drugs 5-fluorouracil and cyclophosphamide using a heterogeneous photo-Fenton process based on copper-containing magnetites (Fe3-xCuxO4).

The effect of substitution of iron by copper in the magnetite lattice was investigated in terms of the catalytic activity in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process. The physicochemical properties of the Fe3-xCuxO4 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF), specific surface area measurements, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Copper-modified magnetite showed higher catalytic activity for H2O2 conversion to HO• (estimated using 7-hydroxycoumarin), compared to pristine magnetite (Fe3O4)

Influence of chloride and Fe(II) content on the reduction of Hg(II) by magnetite.

Abiotic reduction of inorganic mercury by natural organic matter and native soils is well-known, and recently there is evidence that reduced iron (Fe) species, such as magnetite, green rust, and Fe sulfides, can also reduce Hg(II). Here, we evaluated the reduction of Hg(II) by magnetites with varying Fe(II) content in both the absence and presence of chloride. Specifically, we evaluated whether magnetite stoichiometry (x = Fe(II)/Fe(III)) influences the rate of Hg(II) reduction and formation of products. In the absence of chloride, reduction of Hg(II) to Hg(0) is observed over a range of magne

Potential of direct interspecies electron transfer in synergetic enhancement of methanogenesis and sulfate removal in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor with magnetite.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) has been widely applied in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing oxidized sulfur compounds. However, the production of hydrogen sulfide usually limits the syntrophic metabolism proceeded by interspecies hydrogen transfer (IHT), due to its corrosive and toxic properties. The current study was in an attempt to establish direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) to resist the toxic inhibition from hydrogen sulfide and keep syntrophic metabolism stable. The results showed that, in the presence of magnetite, the methane production was improved about 3-10 fold
