PURPOSE: We aimed in this research to explore factors contributing to the occurrence of intra-uterine fetal death (IUFD).
METHODS: The study was conducted between 1st January 2008 and 31st December 2009 in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Patients who were diagnosed to have IUFD at ≥24 weeks of gestation and those whose dead fetuses were found to weigh ≥500 g after delivery were eligible to be included. 138 patients with IUFD and 237 controls with alive fetuses were enrolled. Data were collected from printed and computerized med

Fetal death recurrence is an important problem in reproductive health that is poorly understood. Based on preliminary epidemiologic evidence, we propose an "event memory" hypothesis which posits that when fetal death occurs the event is retained (memorized) as a program that is replayed in future pregnancies. We describe a pathway through which excessive programmed death (apoptosis) that mediates fetal demise in an initial pregnancy gets stored as an apoptotic cascade program that is replayed in a subsequent pregnancy regardless of the cause of the initial pregnancy loss. We propose an innovat

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy creates a unique situation in which both vasculogenesis and extensive angiogenesis are required for successful fetal and placental development. Recently, the soluble form of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor-1 (sVEGFR-1), an antagonist to VEGF and placental growth factor (PlGF) (two important angiogenic factors), has been implicated in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia and small for gestational age (SGA) without preeclampsia. There is, however, a paucity of information concerning plasma sVEGFR-1 concentrations in other obstetrical disorders. The purpose

Fetal death has been defined by the World Health Organization as death before complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy. Certain causes of fetal death, including syphilis, Rh isoimmunization, toxemia, and diabetes, have shown significant declines over the past several decades. However, many fetal losses continue to occur from intrauterine infections, lethal malformations, fetal growth retardation, and abruptio placentae. Fetal death with no identifiable specific cause is another consideration when dealing with these c

The diagnosis of brain death by Doppler ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging is reported in a fetus at 23 weeks' gestation. This is believed to be the first instance in which brain death has been shown in a premature fetus with a brain-stem anomaly.

Umbilical cord stricture is an uncommon but distinctive condition associated with intrauterine fetal death. Although cases have been reported periodically since the last century, there has been considerable speculation as to whether the condition is real or a postmortem artifact. In the present study, 25 cases reported since 1925 are reviewed and 8 new cases are described. Clinically, a decrease in fetal movements is usually the only symptom during the second or third trimester of pregnancy and fetal death occurs soon after. The women's age, health, and previous history have shown no link with

During the last decade, 89 sets of triplets were born in Denmark with a gestational age of more than 25 completed weeks. Fifteen pregnancies (16.9%) were complicated by fetal death in the third trimester, with a total of 17 intrauterine deaths. Six neonatal deaths occurred, leaving 22 survivors among these 15 patients. Four triplet gestations were diagnosed as twins until delivery. Eight women conceived spontaneously, two gestations followed assisted fertilization and embryo transfer, and five women had had various forms of ovulation stimulation. The mean maternal age was 27.8 years (range 17-

A 30-year-old woman suffered massive brain injuries after a motor vehicle accident at 15 weeks' gestation. The patient was diagnosed as brain-dead on her tenth hospital day. She was supported with intensive care for 107 days after this diagnosis, and a normal 1555-g male infant was delivered at approximately 32 weeks' gestation by repeat cesarean section. The child is developing normally at 11 months of age. This represents the longest reported case of prolongation of pregnancy after brain death.

A case of atraumatic antenatal fetal subdural hematoma, severe enough to cause death, is reported. Although it is often associated with traumatic delivery, its occurrence before labor suggests that assumptions of causation require some medical investigation or corroboration before trauma is accepted as the etiologic factor.

OBJECTIVE: Severe motor vehicle accidents involving pregnant women can result in fetal and neonatal death. We describe a case in which fetal death occurred due to relatively mild seatbelt injuries and present the characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the placenta.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old primigravid woman at 20 weeks gestation was involved in an automobile accident. Although she suffered only a seatbelt injury, fetal death subsequently occurred. Contrast-enhanced MRI showed the region compressed by the seatbelt as a low-intensity band without enhancement, and serum al

Chorioangioma of the placenta is a common benign vascular tumour of the placenta consisting of blood vessels and stroma. Most of these tumours are small and have no adverse impact on the fetus. Large tumours are associated with complications affecting mother and the fetus which may cause intrauterine fetal death. Chorioangiomas probably act as peripheral shunts between arteries and veins (arteriovenous shunts) leading to progressive heart failure of the fetus. Prenatal diagnosis is achieved by ultrasonography and Doppler studies will confirm the highly vascular nature of the mass. As the tumou

A 21-year-old patient, in her first and regularly controlled uneventful pregnancy, was admitted to hospital due to lower leg edema, hypertension, proteinuria, and weight gain. Fetal death occurred the next day and a female nonhydropic fetus, 40 cm CH, 1460 grams, at 29-week gestation was delivered. An autopsy showed no visible gross abnormalities except in the heart. The heart was enlarged, with five intramural and subendocardial nodules, 0.3 to 1 cm in size, three in the left ventricular free wall, and one in the right ventricle and right atrium, sharply demarcated, reddish-gray, moderately f

OBJECTIVE: To identify the sociodemographics, obstetrical and perinatology factors of risk most frequently associated to fetal death in greater pregnancies of 27 weeks.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2001 to May 2005, in the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Dr Juan I. Menchaca, we carried out a study of cases and controls with 450 cases of fetal death of more than 27 weeks of gestation and 450 newborn alive whose birth happened immediately later. We compared the frequency of different maternal and fetal variables that in previous forms was associated with fetal death, by means of Chi squared

OBJECTIVE: To determine the antenatal and intrapartum risk factors for intrapartum fetal death (IPFD).
STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed 72,875 singleton deliveries > 500 g between the years 1990 and 1997. In order to find independent factors contributing to IPFD, a multiple logistic regression model was constructed.
RESULTS: During the study period there were 64 cases of IPFD. Birth weight was inversely associated with IPFD in the multivariate analysis. Other significant factors in the multivariate analysis were mothers older than 35 years, polyhydramnios, congenital malformations, pathologic prese

During a 11 year period (1984-1994) we identified and analysed at the Department of Obstetrics, University Hospital of Zurich, among 541 twin pregnancies 19 with single intrauterine death (SIUD) in the second and third trimester. The preterm delivery rate was 68% and much higher compared to singleton pregnancies at the same institution (17%). The caesarean section rate was 47% and also higher compared to singleton pregnancies (21%) but lower than in a normal twin collective (61%). Two of the surviving twins showed malformations. One of them has in addition of porencephaly, probably due to disr

This study examined risk factors that contribute to antepartum fetal death. The population-based sample included 416 antepartum fetal deaths and 449 normal births as controls, from 29 hospitals in Shanghai, China. In addition to small-for-gestational-age and severe pregnancy-induced hypertension, exposure to environmental hazards (radiation, chemicals and pesticides) was significantly associated with fetal death. Elevated relative risk of fetal death was also found in pregnant women whose husbands smoked (adjusted odds ratio = 1.4). Clinicopathologic evidence further confirmed that exposure to

Two cases of nonimmune hydrops fetalis and fetal death associated with cardiac rhabdomyoma are reported. Case 1 presented with fetal supraventricular tachycardia, and cardiac rhabdomyoma was accurately diagnosed by fetal echocardiography. Autopsy revealed multiple rhabdomyomata involving the right atrial free wall, the sinoatrial node, and the left ventricle. The left circumflex coronary artery was extrinsically compressed by adjacent tumor tissue, causing left ventricular myocardial infarction. Case 2 had a unique, pedunculated, ball-like rhabdomyoma that almost totally occluded the mitral or

A case of intrauterine tachycardia is presented. The case was primarily diagnosed as one of foetal death. The correct diagnosis was established by ultrasonic scanning. During the neonatal period, the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome was diagnosed. This is a common cause of intrauterine tachycardia.
