The Role of Mucosal Defense in Intestinal Injury of Infants With Fetal Growth Retardation.

BACKGROUND: Infants with fetal growth retardation (FGR) are prone to intestinal disorders. OBJECTIVES: Aim of the study was to determine the role of mucosal defense ability in formation of gut injury in infants with FGR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 44 premature infants who were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit were divided into two groups: 20 infants with FGR (FGR group) and 24 appropriate-for-gestational age newborns (AGA group). Control group consisted of 22 premature infants who were delivered after uncomplicated pregnancy. Gut barrier function was evaluated by detecting serum inte

[Effect of heparin on umbilical blood flow in patients with fetal growth retardation].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of heparin on umbilical blood flow in pregnant women with fetal growth retardation (FGR). METHODS: A total of 103 FGR women were randomized into control group (n=37), standard heparin group (n=35) and low-molecular-weight heparin group (n=31). Low-molecular-weight dextran was given in the control group, and the other two groups received agents for intervention as indicated. The umbilical blood flow, 1-minute Apgar score, body weight and gestational age of the neonates were measured and compared between the 3 groups. RESULTS: As the gestational age increas

Maternal-fetal histocompatibility in intrauterine growth retarded and normal weight babies.

PROBLEM: To determine whether risk for intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is increased in HLA-DQA1 compatible pregnancies. METHOD: Paired maternal and cord blood samples were obtained from 30 IUGR and 31 non-IUGR pregnancies delivered at a university hospital. Samples were typed for eight HLA-DQA1 alleles using 10 sequence-specific oligonucleotides probes. Associations between IUGR and HLA-DQ compatibility status, and other risk factors were examined using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: HLA-DQ compatibility and history of spontaneous abortion were not individually significant ris

Amniotic fluid volume as a predictor of fetal distress in intrauterine growth retardation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of sonographic assessment of amniotic fluid volume (AFV) in predicting intrapartum fetal distress in pregnancies with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) compared with the nonstress test (NST). METHOD: A prospective study of 242 pregnancies with IUGR who underwent antepartum assessment of AFV and NST with intrapartum continuous FHR monitoring was conducted and analyzed. RESULT: AFV was a reliable predictor of intrapartum fetal distress with sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of 84.0%, 83.41%, 36.84% and 97.84%, respective

[Consequences of smoking on fetal development and risk of intra-uterine growth retardation or in utero fetal death].

Active and passive smoking constitutes one of the most serious public health problems due to the deleterious effect on the expected infant and the mother. These effects are dose dependent as illustrated by intra-uterine growth retardation, where the effect worsens with duration of smoking during pregnancy, and also by other conditions such as abrutio placentae or placenta praevia, premature rupture of the membranes and preterm birth, where the risk is multiplied by two (or even three)! In utero death is the ultimate sanction. Studies on the consequences of maternal smoking on fetal development

Fetal circulatory system in growth-retarded fetus with late decelerations and oligohydramnios.

We present 4 cases of growth-retarded fetuses with fetal heart rate late decelerations and oligohydramnios. Doppler ultrasound revealed significantly decreased pulsatility index (PI) values of the middle cerebral artery; however, the PI values of the renal artery, femoral artery and umbilical artery were within normal ranges in all fetuses. Relative redistributions in the fetal circulatory system were shown with fetal hypoxemia without acidosis.

[Uterine spiral arteries of the human in gestosis, fetal growth retardation and postmaturity].

The uterine spiral arteries in humans were examined after a normal course of pregnancy and a pathological course with gestosis, fetal growth retardation and post-term birth. We found that the spiral arterioles in normal pregnancy underwent physiological changes, such as invasion of trophoblasts and decomposition of fibromuscular media and elastic tissue. Apart from the post-term birth, we detected in pathological pregnancies a narrowing of the vascular lumen by proliferation of the intima and often little or no physiological changes of the spiral arterioles in the myometrial segment. Compared

Cystyl aminopeptidase in maternal serum for the antenatal recognition of fetal growth retardation.

An appraisal has been made of the usefulness of cystyl aminopeptidase (CAS, E.C. 3.4.11.3) activity patterns in the in utero detection of fetal growth retardation; 196 pregnancies at risk from placental insufficiency, classified into 9 aetiologic groups were considered. Absolute levels and trend of enzyme activity were studied in all cases and compared with the reference range of CAS activity established in 267 healthy pregnant subjects. Excluding multiple pregnancies, overall predictive value of CAS in defining fetal outcome in 186 'at risk' pregnancies was 72%, overall sensitivity and specif

Fetal growth retardation in relation to maternal smoking and weight gain in pregnancy.

Two types of fetal growth retardation were recognized in term infants. One type was characterized by an abnormally low ponderal index (defined as birth weight in grams X 100 divided by crown-heel length in cubic centimeters.) The other type of growth-retarded infants had abnormally short crown-heel lengths for fetal age. Both types were observed under all conditions studied. However, mothers who smoked cigarettes during pregnancy were more likely to have infants with short body lengths for dates, whereas mothers who had low weight gain in pregnancy were more likely to have infants with low pon

[Antenatal assessment of intrauterine growth retardation by ultrasonic fetal biometry and non-stress fetal heart rate testing].

This paper presented the results of ultrasonic measurements and non-stress tests (NST) in 60 light-for-dates (LFD) fetuses. BPD, FFL, mean abdominal diameter (MAD), HC/AC ratio and EFW were used as the parameters and the rates of LFD detection were evaluated. The effects of antenatal therapy for IUGR were assessed by the analyses of normal deviate values of EFW in treated and untreated groups. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of NST findings were presented. As to the detection of LFD, sensitivity values for MAD and EFW were 66.7% and 53.8% respectively; meanwhile both parameters disclosed

Effects of interpregnancy intervals on preterm birth, intrauterine growth retardation, and fetal loss.

This study examines the magnitude and shape of the interpregnancy interval (IPI) effect on three pregnancy outcomes: preterm low birthweight (PRETERM-LBW), intrauterine growth-retardation low birthweight (IUGR-LBW), and fetal loss (LOSS). A multinomial logistic regression model is estimated, based on data from the 1988 National Survey of Family Growth which contains pregnancy histories. The results indicate that both short and long intervals raise the risk of IUGR-LBW and LOSS, net of sociodemographic and behavioral variables, but IPI effects on PRETERM-LBW are not clear.

Uteroplacental blood flow index in intrauterine growth retardation of fetal or maternal origin.

Uteroplacental blood flow index was determined in 30 women with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR group) and in 26 women without fetal growth retardation (control group) during the last trimester of pregnancy. After 1 mCi (37 MBq) of indium-113m chloride had been injected intravenously the radiation was registered by a computer-linked scintillation camera positioned above the placenta during 10 s-intervals for 240 s. From the isotope accumulation curve a uteroplacental blood flow index could be calculated for each patient. The median blood flow index in the IUGR group was less than half of

Hydrocephalus and Growth Retardation: A Fetal RNU4ATAC-opathy Missed by Whole-Exome Sequencing.

INTRODUCTION: Whole-exome sequencing (WES) is becoming widely available in prenatal diagnosis. However, as with most scientific methods, WES also has its limitations. The aim of the study was to report a fetal case of RNU4ATAC-opathy which was missed by prenatal WES. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old healthy primigravida was revealed by ultrasound at 20 + 3 weeks of gestation to have a fetus with ventriculomegaly (left 15.1 mm/right 11.9 mm), hypoplastic vermis, and mild growth retardation. Chromosomal microarray analysis and trio WES failed to detect a pathogenic copy number variation and seq

Potential Utility of Melatonin in Preeclampsia, Intrauterine Fetal Growth Retardation, and Perinatal Asphyxia.

AIM: Reactive oxygen species play an important role in the pathogenesis of several diseases during gestation and the perinatal period. During pregnancy, increased oxygen demand augments the rate of production of free radicals. Oxidative stress is involved in pregnancy disorders including preeclampsia and intrauterine fetal growth retardation (IUGR). Moreover, increased levels of oxidative stress and reduced antioxidative capacities may contribute to the pathogenesis of perinatal asphyxia. Melatonin, an efficient antioxidant agent, diffuses through biological membranes easily and exerts pleiotr
