Chronic Thigh Pain in an Adolescent: A Case Report and Literature Review of Desmoplastic Fibroma, A Rare Benign Tumor.

INTRODUCTION: Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a very rare, benign but aggressive bone tumor. It makes up <0.1% of all bone tumors and is often mistaken for other conditions, such as bone cysts or giant cell tumors. DF can occur in different bones, but it is uncommon in the proximal femur. Because it looks like other bone diseases on X-rays, diagnosing it correctly can be difficult. Proper treatment is needed to prevent it from coming back. However, due to its rarity, treatment recommendations are largely based on individual case reports, limiting the ability to establish standardized protocols.

Desmoplastic fibroma of the mandible in a 5-year-old child as an early oral manifestation of familial adenomatous polyposis.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign yet locally aggressive intraosseous tumour rarely encountered in the mandible. It often mimics other oral lesions. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a condition in which individuals tend to develop multiple colorectal polyps, which may convert to colorectal cancer unless treated. FAP has various colonic and extra-colonic manifestations, including oral manifestations. A case of DF of the mandible in a 5-year-old child is presented here. The patient remained free of recurrence 4 years after segmental resection and immediate reconstruction with a fibula

Successful Treatment of a Massive Desmoplastic Fibroma of the Ilium without Surgery: A Case Report with Long-Term Follow-Up.

Desmoplastic fibroma of the bone (DFB) is a notably rare, lytic, locally aggressive but nonmetastatic, primary benign bone tumor in patients less than 30 years old. As the recommended primary treatment for DFB, wide resection is preferred to curettage from the perspective of recurrence but wide resection of DFB in the pelvis such as in the acetabulum could result in greater functional loss, suggesting the need for conservative treatments. However, there is no report on long-term follow-up following conservative treatment for DFB. The present case involved a 21-year-old woman with right hip pai

Desmoplastic Fibroma: A Rare Pathological Midshaft Femoral Fracture Treated With Resection, Acute Shortening, and Re-lengthening: A Case Report.

CASE: We report a rare case of desmoplastic fibroma (DF) of the midshaft femur presenting as a pathological fracture. This rare benign bone tumor was treated with an acute en bloc excision and femoral shortening over an intramedullary nail. Once union of the acute shortening had been achieved, further surgery was undertaken to lengthen the femur with the use of Intramedullary Skeletal Kinetic Distractors. At 3 years after fracture, our patient had achieved equal leg lengths, had normal knee function, and was disease free. CONCLUSIONS: DF resulting in pathological fracture of the midshaft femu

Fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma of pelvis-a potential diagnostic pitfall.

Fibrocartilaginous mesenchymoma (FM) is a rare bone tumor mimicking other fibrocartilaginous lesions on imaging and histologically. Hence, it is difficult to diagnose this entity especially on small biopsies. In this article, we report a case of FM mimicking desmoplastic fibroma on biopsy. A 36-year-old male presented with pain in the left hip. Imaging showed a large expansile lytic lesion involving the acetabulum and pubis. The differential diagnosis was suggestive of giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst, intraosseous desmoplastic fibroma, and chondrosarcoma. Biopsy revealed a low-grade spi

Bilateral collagenous fibroma of the hard palate: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Collagenous fibroma or desmoplastic fibroblastoma is a rare benign fibrous tissue tumor. It usually presents as a painless, slowly growing mass. Collagenous fibroma arises ordinarily inside the subcutaneous tissues or skeletal muscles. Histopathologically, the tumor consists of scattered stellate and spindle cells in a hypovascular collagenous stroma without atypia or infiltration. The oral cavity is a very uncommon site for desmoplastic fibroblastoma. Only 15 published articles in the literature reported the intraoral location. We present a case of collagenous fibroma with a bilat

Odontogenic fibroma.

The odontogenic fibroma is a rare tumor that has generated controversy, perhaps disproportionately to its importance in the family of odontogenic tumors. The clinical and radiographic features are well documented but the histologic aspects have generated controversy. The behavior is benign, and published accounts indicate a low recurrence rate following treatment by curettage. The tumor recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) is the legitimate odontogenic fibroma. Histologic variants include the granular cell type and the hybrid odontogenic fibroma giant cell-like tumor. Although the

Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma: a cytologist's perspective.

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of a case of ameloblastic fibrosarcoma (AFS), an unusual odontogenic tumor related to ameloblastoma (AB), was performed in a 25-year-old female with a 1 cm swelling in the left lower orbital region along with involvement of zygomatic region. Aspiration of the tumor yielded a cellular sample composed predominantly of mesenchymal element and few clusters representing epithelial component showing tall columnar cells with peripheral palisading. Detailed cytomorphological features of AFS are discussed along with differential diagnosis from other tumors such as AB, de

Concurrent medulloblastoma and cardiac fibroma: a rare presentation of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder resulting from PTCH1 gene mutation and presents with variable clinical manifestations. The co-occurrence of medulloblastoma and cardiac fibroma in Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is extremely rare. The present article discusses a patient diagnosed with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome and concurrent medulloblastoma and cardiac fibroma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-month-old boy transferred to our hospital after a radiological finding of posterior fossa lesion and hydrocephalus. A pericardial mass was noted after persistent arrhythmias. A desmoplastic fibroblastoma that developed in the anterior mediastinum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic fibroblastoma (also known as collagenous fibroma) is a benign, slowly growing soft-tissue tumor. Most desmoplastic fibroblastomas develop in the limbs, neck, or trunk. A mediastinal origin is quite rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old Asian female was referred to us for the diagnosis and treatment of an anterior mediastinal tumor. The tumor was 80 mm in the largest diameter and was located on the pericardium. No invasion was evident. She underwent resection of the tumor via video-assisted thoracoscopic resection. The tumor was totally encapsulated, and its pedicle w

Intraosseous fibrous lesions of the jaws: a manifestation of tuberous sclerosis.

Four patients previously diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis are reported with intraosseous fibrous lesions of the jaws. Review of the literature revealed comparable pathosis occurring in extragnathic bones and several previous reports of similar lesions within the jaws. Therefore, these intraosseous fibrous proliferations are thought to represent an intraoral manifestation of tuberous sclerosis and not coincidental findings. In all 4 cases, the tumors demonstrated significant collagenization with numerous interspersed plump fibroblasts. Although histopathologically similar, the features of the

Uncommon presentation of desmoplastic fibroblastoma on the tongue of a female patient.

Desmoplastic fibroblastoma (DF) is a rare benign soft tissue with spindle-to-stellate-shaped fibroblasts and myofibroblasts embedded in a prominent collagenous background. DF, mainly affecting subcutaneous and muscle tissue, very rarely occurs in the oral cavity. Hitherto, only one case of DF on the tongue has been reported. Here, we report another case. A 66-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with a mass formation in the tongue. On examination, a well-circumscribed, elastic, soft tumour with normal surface mucosa, measuring 13×12 mm, was observed on the left dorsal surface of her ton

Benign fibrous histiocytoma of bone.

The clinical, radiologic, and pathological features of eight cases of fibrohistiocytic bone lesions histologically identical to the nonossifying fibroma of childhood are presented. They differed from the childhood lesion in their clinical and radiological features. They occurred in adults, and were frequently associated with pain in the absence of complicating fracture. They were not confined to the metaphysis of long bones. When metaphyseal, the lesions also frequently showed a tendency to involve the epiphysis. Others occurred in the diaphysis of long bones, in the pelvis, and in a rib. Thre

Oral Bilateral Collagenous Fibroma: A previously unreported case and literature review.

Collagenous fibroma, also known as desmoplastic fibroblastoma, is a rare benign slow growing tumor particularly uncommon in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and histopathological features of an oral collagenous fibroma as well as to compare this data with those reported in an English-literature review. The thirteenth case of collagenous fibroma in the oral cavity and the first to present clinically as a bilateral mass was described. A 48-years-old female patient was referred to a School of Dentistry, complaining about an asymptomatic swelling on the hard palat

Desmoplastic fibroblastoma presenting as a parotid tumour: a case report and review of the literature.

Desmoplastic fibroblastomas (DFs) are rare fibrous soft tissue tumours that usually arise in subcutaneous tissue or skeletal muscle in a variety of anatomical sites. These lesions most frequently present as painless, slow-growing mobile masses. A case of DF is described in a 47-year-old man who presented with a painless right parotid mass of 2 months duration. At surgery, the lesion was attached to the tail of the right parotid gland. Histopathological examination demonstrated a fibrous lesion comprising spindled and stellate shaped fibroblasts with focal myxoid stromal change. The features we

Fibrolipomatous hamartoma in a patient with tuberous sclerosis: report of a case.

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare congenital disorder with an incidence of 1 in 6000 births. The classic triad is seizure, mental deficiency, and angiofibromas. Orofacial manifestations include fibrous hyperplasia, hemangioma, bifid uvula, cleft lip and palate, macroglossia, high arched palate, and enamel defects. Benign tumors of the jaws including desmoplastic fibroma, calcifying odontogenic tumor, and odontogenic myxoma have been recently reported in tuberous sclerosis. This case report adds fibrolipomatous hamartoma of the mandible to this list.

Desmoid tumor of bone with enchondromatous nodules, mistaken for chondrosarcoma.

Desmoid tumor of bone, also termed desmoplastic fibroma or aggressive fibromatosis, is a rare, locally aggressive fibroblastic tumor. We present a 16-year-old male with a huge desmoid tumor involving the iliac wing. It was associated with enchondromatous nodules mimicking malignancy. The tumor in this patient was mistaken for chondrosarcoma and hemipelvectomy was performed. To our knowledge, such a case has not previously been documented fully in the English literature. The radiographic and pathologic findings and a possible mechanism of enchondromatous nodule formation in fibrous bone tumors
