The relation between fibronectin and immune complexes in rheumatic disease was examined in a series of linked studies. Fibronectin was present in immune complexes formed in vitro in the absence of C1q. Gel filtration chromatography showed complexed fibronectin was present in the serum of a patient with rheumatoid vasculitis, but not in normal serum; the complexed fibronectin coeluted with IgA and C3. Plasma fibronectin was determined by laser nephelometric immunoassay in two populations: (a) healthy subjects separated into three age groups (16-29 yr, 30-50 yr and over 50 yr) and, (b) patients with various hemopathic diseases without any infection or any therapy. Results showed that fibronectin levels in a healthy population were strongly influenced by age. An increase of human plasma fibronectin was shown to occur with age. Plasma fibronectin levels in 66 medical ICU (MICU) patients were measured daily. Mean values of initial levels were significantly higher in survivors (266 +/- 14 mg/L) than nonsurvivors (179 +/- 13 mg/L; p less than .0003). Fibronectin (FN) distribution was compared among samples of normal human dermis, hypertrophic scar, keloid, and granulation tissues from deep injuries. An interaction between fibronectin and viral envelope glycoprotein micelles isolated from influenza A, parainfluenza 1, and mumps viruses was found by enzyme immunoassay. The distribution of fibronectin was studied in normal human breast tissue and in breast tumors. In normal tissues and in benign tumors, fibronectin was present in basal laminae and on the cellular surfaces of myoepithelial and secretory cells. Plasma fibronectin (PFN) is associated with cryoglobulins of the polyclonal type. Cryoglobulins from two patients with essential mixed cryoglobulinaemia were analysed immunoelectrophoretically to determine a possible association between PFN and immunoglobulin complexes in the formation of cryoprecipitates. In cryoglobulins from each patient, distinctive alterations in electrophoretic migration patterns of both PFN and immunoglobulin were associated with the formation of a cryoprecipitate. The observations indicate that PFN binds to some serum component in the process of cryoglobulin formation.

BACKGROUND: Fibronectin glomerulopathy is a rare genetic nephropathy with only a few cases of post-transplant recurrence being reported previously. To explore the role of tenascin (TN) and fibronectin (FN) in the pathophysiology of nasal polyps (NP), the expression of TN and FN in NP from 34 patients and inferior turbinates from 20 patients with deviation of nasal septum was immunohistochemically studied.
