The introduction of animal-borne, multisensor tags has opened up many opportunities for ecological research, making previously inaccessible species and behaviors observable. The advancement of tag technology and the increasingly widespread use of bio-logging tags are leading to large volumes of sometimes extremely detailed data. With the increasing quantity and duration of tag deployments, a set of tools needs to be developed to aid in facilitating and standardizing the analysis of movement sensor data. Here, we developed an observation-based decision tree method to detect feeding events in da

Climate change and other anthropogenic pressures are rapidly reshaping marine ecosystems, altering prey availability and predator interactions. Yet empirical evidence of how these relationships shift under changing conditions remains scarce. Drawing on over a decade of monitoring in a subarctic fjord system, we provide a rare insight into these dynamics. In northern Norway, the winter aggregation of herring (Clupea harengus) and their primary predator, the killer whale (Orcinus orca), has shifted northward under the combined influence of climate change and fishing pressure. This redistribution

A number of parasitic diseases have gained importance as neozoan opportunistic infections in the marine environment. Here, we report on the gastrointestinal endoparasite fauna of three baleen whale species and one toothed whale: blue (Balaenoptera musculus), fin (Balaenoptera physalus), and sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) from the Azores Islands, Portugal. In total, 17 individual whale fecal samples [n = 10 (B. physalus); n = 4 (P. macrocephalus); n = 2 (B. musculus); n = 1 (B. borealis)] were collected from free-swimming animals as part of ongoing

The number of social contacts of mammals is positively correlated with the diversity of their gut microbes. There is some evidence that sociality also affects microbes in the respiratory tract. We tested whether the airway microbiota of cetacean species differ depending on the whales' level of sociality. We sampled the blow of blue (Balaenoptera musculus), grey (Eschrichtius robustus), humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and long-finned pilot whales (PWs) (Globicephala melas) and analysed the blow microbiota by barcode tag sequencing targeting the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Between 1983 and 1996 a total of 1386 samples of serum were taken from four species of seal and three species of whale in the waters west of Iceland, the area of pack-ice north-west of Jan Mayen, the northern coast of Norway and the Kola Peninsula, the waters west of Svalbard, and the Barents Sea; they were tested for the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies with an indirect ELISA (protein G conjugate). The positive sera were re-tested with classical brucellosis serological tests, such as the serum agglutination test, the EDTA-modified serum agglutination test, the Rose Bengal test, and the co

Detailed pathological and virological examinations were carried out on 25 cetaceans found stranded between 1990 and 1993 on the coasts of six Italian regions (Latium, Tuscany, Apulia, Abruzzo, Veneto and Sicily). There were 16 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), three bottlenosed dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), three Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), one rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis), one fin whale pup (Balaenoptera physalus), and one minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata). Apart from parasitic diseases (44 per cent), the most frequently detected lesions were pneumonia (68

Understanding the trophic interactions of sympatric predators is essential to assess ecosystem structure, particularly in oligotrophic environments where resources are scarce. We examined the trophic structure of a diverse community of sympatric delphinids in the Lesser Antilles, in the eastern Caribbean Sea, using stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis. Isotope data suggest the existence of three distinct isotopic clusters. Killer whales (Orcinus orca) and false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) exhibited the highest δ15N and δ13C values, broad isotopic niches, and minim

Fatal marine Brucella infections with histologic lesions specific to the central nervous system (CNS), known as neurobrucellosis, have been described in 5 species of odontocete cetaceans in the UK: striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, Atlantic white-sided dolphins Lagenorhynchus acutus, short-beaked common dolphins Delphinus delphis, long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas and Sowerby's beaked whale Mesoplodon bidens. To date, these CNS lesions have only been associated with Brucella ceti ST26 and not with B. pinnipedialis, which is rarely isolated from cetaceans and, although commonly f

Tongue morphology in cetaceans may reflect functional adaptations related to different feeding strategies. This study compared the lingual surface morphology of four delphinids species with different feeding strategies: the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus), Clymene dolphin (Stenella clymene), and spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris). Macroscopic dissections, light microscopy analysis, histochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed on four tongues, one from each species. The short-finned pilot whale and Risso's do

The Caprera Canyon, a submarine canyon system off Sardinia in the western Mediterranean, was thought to be an important cetacean habitat, though studies on the area remained limited. To address this knowledge gap, 216 boat-based surveys were conducted between 2011 and 2019, covering 8443 km, using both research and whale-watching vessels. The distribution, diversity, relative abundance (Encounter Rate - ER), and habitat use of cetaceans were described, along with relevant behavioural and ecological observations. A total of 8 species were reported across 810 sightings, encompassing 7 out of the

Baleen whales produce and receive underwater sounds with wavelengths much longer than their bodies, despite having ears approximately the size of a human fist. How do they hear long wavelength sounds with relatively small ears? In 2015, we produced a computational model to simulate low-frequency hearing in the fin whale. That study predicted bone conduction as the most likely hearing mechanism. The whale's enormous skull acts as an external ear, capturing sounds like an acoustic antenna and transmitting them to other parts of the ear. In the current study, we tested the bone conduction hypothe

Morbilliviruses are recognized as biological agents highly impacting the health and conservation status of free-ranging cetaceans worldwide, as clearly exemplified by the two Dolphin Morbillivirus (DMV) epidemics of 1990-1992 and 2006-2008 among Mediterranean striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). After these two epidemics, morbilliviral infection (MI) cases with peculiar neurobiological features were reported in striped dolphins stranded along the Spanish coastline. Affected cetaceans showed a subacute-to-chronic, non-suppurative encephalitis, with brain lesions strongly resembling those f

Throughout evolution, odontocete vision has had to readapt to the aquatic environment, which has had far-reaching effects on ocular anatomy and neurology. The most prominent features include the iris with an operculum, a well-developed choroid, the presence of giant ganglion cells in the retina, and the hemispherical shape of the thick eyecup. In the present study, the optic nerve and the retina were comparatively studied in Odontoceti (Cuvier's beaked whale, common bottlenose dolphin, false killer whale, long-finned pilot whale, Risso's dolphin, striped dolphin), the semi-aquatic common hippo

OBJECTIVE: To examine the anatomy of the ciliary body in the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), paying close attention to its vascularization and to compare to those of its distant relative, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana), the amphibious hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) and the aquatic short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus).
PROCEDURE: Specimens from each species were preserved in 10% buffered formalin, and observed stereomicroscopically before being embedded in paraffin, sectioned and stained by Masson trichrome, hematoxylin and eosin, and periodic acid-

Fatal meningoencephalitis due to Brucella ceti infection has been described in striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), Atlantic white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus acutus), short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas), which are all within the family Delphinidae. We report B. ceti-associated neurobrucellosis in three juvenile male Sowerby's beaked whales (Mesoplodon bidens) that all had typical lesions of lymphocytic meningoencephalitis, which increased in severity from rostral to caudal regions of the brain. In two cases there was loss

Transboundary pollution with harmful chemicals triggers research in remote regions such as the Arctic. Legacy and emerging hydrophobic organic contaminants, including persistent organic pollutants, biomagnify and are of particular concern in marine top predators and humans. Each chemical group can exceed effect thresholds in apex predators without considering mixture effects with other contaminants nor multiple stressor settings. We used silicone chemometers to investigate the contaminant profiles in blubber tissues collected from 84 individuals covering six Arctic marine mammal species from E

Many previous studies have shown that rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae), including the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), fin whale (B. physalus), sei whale (B. borealis), Bryde's whale (B. edeni), minke whale (B. acutorostrata), and humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), employ a strategy called lunge feeding to capture a large amount of krill and/or fish for nourishment [1]. Lunge feeding entails a high energetic cost due to the drag created by an open mouth at high speeds [1,2]. In the upper Gulf of Thailand, Bryde's whales, which feed on small fish species [3], predominantly anchovies, d
