The use of photodynamic therapy in dermatology: results of a consensus conference.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has significant promise in improving outcomes of patients with a variety of cutaneous conditions. A group of experts met to review the principles, indications, and clinical benefits of PDT with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). They also reviewed PDT with methyl aminolevulinate. The experts established consensus statements for pretreatment, posttreatment, ALA contact time, light sources, and numbers of sessions associated with ALA PDT for actinic keratosis and superficial basal cell carcinoma, photorejuvenation and cosmetic enhancement, acne, sebaceous skin, rosacea, and

Neonatal Neurocritical Care in Low-Resource Settings: Challenges and Innovations in Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.

Many neonatal neuroprotective strategies have been developed to reduce the impact of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy on mortality and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. The most effective strategy to date is therapeutic hypothermia, which has been shown to improve survival rates and neurologic outcomes. However, a recent International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation statement recommends using therapeutic hypothermia only in specialized neonatal neurocritical care facilities, which are not universally accessible. Low-resource settings are particularly disadvantaged due to a lack of train

The Nairobi Summit and Reproductive Justice: Unmet Needs for People with Infertility.

The Nairobi Summit, held in November 2019 and convened by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities, claims to have represented "all nations and peoples, and all segments" of society during its high-level conference. The overall aim of the summit was to mobilize political will and financial commitments that are urgently needed to "finally and fully" implement the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Program of Action. Despite the recommendation by ICPD to incorporate infertility care in reproductive health services, the new Nairobi Statement largely neglec

Acceptability and Perceived Usefulness of a Digital Gambling Harm Minimization Tool: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Gambling consumers show low uptake and engagement with tools designed to support safer gambling practices and reduce the risk of experiencing gambling-related harms. We used co-design principles to design and develop a digital tool for safer gambling (BetWell) to overcome known barriers to tool uptake, including a focus on gambling problems. BetWell aims to increase awareness of personal gambling expenditure and knowledge of how gambling products function to support informed decision-making about gambling. It was designed based on behavioral change theories and presents a personali

Evidence review for the 2016 International Ankle Consortium consensus statement on the prevalence, impact and long-term consequences of lateral ankle sprains.

Lateral ankle sprains (LASs) are the most prevalent musculoskeletal injury in physically active populations. They also have a high prevalence in the general population and pose a substantial healthcare burden. The recurrence rates of LASs are high, leading to a large percentage of patients with LAS developing chronic ankle instability. This chronicity is associated with decreased physical activity levels and quality of life and associates with increasing rates of post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis, all of which generate financial costs that are larger than many have realised. The literature r

A prospective cohort study evaluating the cost-effectiveness of carbetocin for prevention of postpartum haemorrhage in caesarean sections.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. Prophylaxis with oxytocic medication is recommended by the WHO to prevent its occurrence. Carbetocin is a newer oxytocic, with potential to lower PPH rates, reduce the total use of oxytocic drugs and lead to financial savings. Meta-analyses have confirmed a reduction in the use of additional oxytocic medication with the use of carbetocin compared to oxytocin. However, there are few studies evaluating the costs of carbetocin prophylaxis. We carried out a prospective cohort study evaluating the financial impact of

The financial impact of COVID-19: Evidence from an event study of global hospitality firms.

This paper examines the daily abnormal stock price returns of a sample of 154 publicly-traded hospitality firms from 23 different countries representing over $400 billion in combined market capitalization around the time that COVID-19 was first viewed by stock market participants as a major-possibly even existential-threat. The findings of the study suggest that, financially, hotels performed better than restaurants, which themselves performed better than casinos. These findings are consistent with medical recommendations concerning the relative safety of various hospitality-related activities

Legal aspects of genetic testing in the evaluation of ventricular tachycardias.

There is increasing knowledge of the genetic basis of distinct cardiac pathologies that are related to ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VT) and sudden cardiac death (SCD). The identification of genes responsible for inherited cardiac diseases has led to the organization of cardiogenetic consultations in many countries worldwide. The 2022 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines for the management of patients with ventricular arrhythmias and the prevention of SCD and the international 2022 Expert Consensus Statement on the state of genetic testing for cardiac diseases emphasize the importan

Systematic review of Aedes aegypti control trials suggests publication bias related to author disclosure of conflicts of interest.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever, resulting in a large global disease burden. Vector control remains the key strategy to prevent transmission due to the absence of widely available vaccines or treatments. Many studies evaluate control approaches, yet only a subset are published in peer-reviewed journals. One potential contributor to selective reporting, or publication bias, could be a conflict of interest (COI), defined as employment by a for-profit company conducting the trial, or a financial interest tie

ACcurate COnsensus Reporting Document (ACCORD) explanation and elaboration: Guidance and examples to support reporting consensus methods.

BackgroundWhen research evidence is limited, inconsistent, or absent, healthcare decisions and policies need to be based on consensus amongst interested stakeholders. In these processes, the knowledge, experience, and expertise of health professionals, researchers, policymakers, and the public are systematically collected and synthesised to reach agreed clinical recommendations and/or priorities. However, despite the influence of consensus exercises, the methods used to achieve agreement are often poorly reported. The ACCORD (ACcurate COnsensus Reporting Document) guideline was developed to he

Perspectives of Hospitalized Mental Health Care Users Concerning the Involvement of Family Members in Their Care: A Qualitative Study.

The value of families and professionals in mental health care is well understood. Patient perspectives appear to have gotten less attention to date. This study investigated the perspectives of hospitalized mental health care users on the involvement of family members in their care using a qualitative phenomenological design. The participants with lived experience of family members being involved in their care were chosen using non-probability, purposive sampling. Individual interviews were carried out with the assistance of a voice recorder and observation notes. Because of data saturation, on
