OBJECTIVE: The overall response, load transmission, role of ligaments, and state of stress in various components under varus-valgus moments in the intact and collateral-deficient tibiofemoral joint are investigated. DESIGN: A non-linear finite element model consisting of bony structures (tibia and femur), their articular cartilage layers, medial and lateral menisci and four primary ligaments (cruciates and collaterals) is utilized. BACKGROUND: Valgus and varus stresses are among the primary mechanisms of injury to knee ligaments. Several in vitro studies have investigated the role of ligaments

We studied the theoretical stress distribution in the proximal femoral epiphysis by means of a three-dimensional finite element model that allowed simulation of the central epiphyseal necrosis found in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. The model was altered to study effects of age, extent of necrosis, portion of gait cycle, and effects of osteotomy on containment. It was found that small infarcts were less likely to exhibit collapse because of stress shielding, which decreased when the infarct was extensive or the area was not contained. There was little difference in stresses regardless of age or p

Pathological fractures due to metastatic bone disease frequently require palliative stabilization. While polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) provides immediate mechanical stabilization, its limited bending and multiaxial properties raise concerns. Reinforcement strategies such as plate fixation, intramedullary nails, and metallic augmentation have been proposed, yet their mechanical behavior under physiological loading remains insufficiently characterized. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical performance of three reconstruction strategies for a proximal radial defect: PMMA alone, PMMA combined

BACKGROUND: Patellar fractures present challenges in treatment, with traditional methods often leading to complications such as loss of reduction and implant failure. This study aimed to compare a novel suture fixation technique with the traditional tension band method using finite element analysis.
METHODS: CT images of a healthy 35-year-old male were used to construct 3D patellar models. Two fixation methods were modeled: the novel suture technique using polyester sutures and traditional tension band fixation with Kirschner wires and cerclage wires. Finite element analysis was conducted to

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize insights gained by finite element (FE) model-based mechanical biomarkers of bone for in vivo assessment of bone development and adaptation, fracture risk, and fracture healing.
RECENT FINDINGS: Muscle-driven FE models have been used to establish correlations between prenatal strains and morphological development. Postnatal ontogenetic studies have identified potential origins of bone fracture risk and quantified the mechanical environment during stereotypical locomotion and in response to increased loading. FE-based virtual mechani

Finite-element analysis is a computational modeling technique that can be used to quantify parameters that are difficult or impossible to measure externally in a geometrically complex structure such as the foot and ankle. It has been used to improve our understanding of pathomechanics and to evaluate proposed treatments for several disorders, including progressive collapsing foot deformity, ankle arthritis, syndesmotic injury, ankle fracture, plantar fasciitis, diabetic foot ulceration, hallux valgus, and lesser toe deformities. Parameters calculated from finite-element models have been widely

The aim of this study was to design for mandibular reconstruction of large lateral defect with minimum target reliability with designated confidence interval under bite force range of 300 ± 102 N. The performance of the models has been evaluated by numerical analysis considering the uncertainty of input parameters. Computer-Aided design was used to develop the models of three designs according to the patient's anatomy and to achieve to near symmetry of the mandible. Stress-strength modeling was utilized for the probabilistic physics of failure analysis under assumption of a quasi-static load.

Titanium alloy based maxillofacial plates and implants are widely used in fracture treatment and reconstructions. Filler materials Graphene Nanoplatlets(GNPs) were used in a Titanium alloy maxillofacial plate and a Finite Element Model (FEM) was designed to reconstruct a fractured human mandible. Both 50N and 500N bite forces were applied on the mandible and stress distribution using Von mises failure theory across the plate sections was analyzed. A pure plate was critically stressed at a section near the mandible fracture region for a Von mises stress of nearly 27.5GPa while this stress reduc

A three-dimensional hip model was created from the MRI scans of one human subject based on constructing the entire pelvis and femur. The ball and socket joint was modelled between the hip's acetabulum and the femoral head to analyse the multiaxial loads applied in the hip joint. The three key ligaments that reinforce the external surface of the hip to help to stabilise the joint were also modelled which are the iliofemoral, the pubofemoral and ischiofemoral ligaments. Each of these ligaments wraps around the joint connection to form a seal over the synovial membrane, a line of attachment aroun

Finite element method (FEM) was used to investigate the biomechanical properties of three types of surgical fixations of U-shaped sacral fractures. Based on a previously established and validated complete lumbar-pelvic model, three models of surgical fixations of U-shaped sacral fractures were established: ① S1S2 passed through screw (S1S2), ② L4-L5 pedicle screw + screw for wing of ilium (L4L5 + IS), and ③ L4-L5 pedicle screw + S1 passed through screw + screw for wing of ilium (L4L5 + S1 + IS). The foot is at the base of the antigravity control system (postural or equilibrium system) that allows the man to assume the upright posture and to move in the space. This podalic cohesion is achieved by the capsulo-ligamentous and aponeurotic formations to which are added the muscular formations with functions of "active ligaments" and postural. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of human foot was developed using the real foot skeleton and soft tissue geometry, obtained from the 3D reconstruction of MR images. The plantar fascia and the other main ligaments were simulated using tru

BACKGROUND: This study aims to provide biomechanical data on the effect of patella height in the setting of medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction using finite element analysis. The study will also examine patellofemoral joint biomechanics using variable femoral insertion sites for MPFL reconstruction.
METHODS: A previously validated finite element knee model was modified to study patella alta and baja by translating the patella a given distance to achieve each patella height ratio. Additionally, the models were modified to study various femoral insertion sites of the MPFL (anat

PURPOSE: This study analyzes the effects of loading a Kennedy class I implant-assisted removable partial denture (IARPD) using finite element analysis (FEA). Standard RPDs are not originally designed to accommodate a posterior implant load point. The null hypothesis is that the introduction of posteriorly placed implants into an RPD has no effect on the load distribution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Faro Arm scan was used to extract the geometrical data of a human partially edentulous mandible. A standard plus regular neck (4.8 × 12 mm) Straumann® implant and titanium matrix, tooth roots, and pe

INTRODUCTION: The goal of this study was to analyze the strains induced in the sutures of the midface and the cranial base by headgear therapy involving orthopedic forces. Does the mechanical signal induced in the sutures sufficiently account for a growth-influencing effect?
METHODS: A finite element model of the viscerocranium and the neurocranium was used. It consisted of 53,555 tetrahedral elements and 97,550 nodes. The strain induced in the sutures of the cranial base and the midface when applying orthopedic headgear forces of 5 and 10 N was computed and recorded with an interactive measu

The vertebral column is the most frequent site of metastatic involvement of the skeleton. Due to the proximity to the spinal cord, from 5% to 10% of all cancer patients develop neurologic manifestations. As a consequence, fracture risk prediction has significant clinical importance. In this study, we model the metastatically involved vertebra so as to parametrically investigate the effects of tumor size, material properties and compressive loading rate on vertebral strength. A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model of a spinal motion segment consisting of the first lumbar vertebral

The optimal treatment strategy after syndesmotic injuries is still controversial. In our study, we aimed to evaluate ideal fixation method in syndesmotic injury by using finite element analysis method. A 3D SolidWorks model file was created by taking computed tomography (CT) images of the area from the right foot base to the knee joint level of a healthy adult male. The intact model, injury model, and 8 different fixation models were created that 3.5 mm screw and suture-button were used in. The models were compared in terms of lateral fibular translation, posterior fibular translation and exte

Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computer-based mathematical method commonly used in spine and orthopedic biomechanical research. Advances in computational power and engineering modeling and analysis software have enabled many recent technical applications of FEA. Through the use of FEA, a wide range of scenarios can be simulated, such as physiological processes, mechanisms of disease and injury, and the efficacy of surgical procedures. Such models have the potential to enhance clinical studies by allowing comparisons of surgical treatments that would be impractical to perform in human or an

This work presents a biomechanical study of myringosclerosis (MS), an abnormal condition of the ear that produces calcification of the lamina propria of the eardrum. The study researched the transfer of sound to the stapes depending on the localization, dimension and calcification degree of the MS plaques. Results were obtained using a validated finite element model of the ear. The mechanical properties of the lamina propria were modified, in order to model MS plaques, using the rule of mixtures for particle composites considering that the plaques are made of hydroxyapatite particles in a matr

The car's windscreen, which birds frequently come into contact when driving, determined to be one of the primary causes of severe bird as well as passengers, injuries. For the design and assessment of vehicle safety performance, finite element-based analysis of object strike to the windshield is commonly employed. The majority of the simpler windshield models utilized in simulations for various object strike research. However, for a reliable prediction of injuries during a car to bird accident, accurate modelling of the windshield and different glass materials considered as mechanical behaviou

Midurethral slings are used to correct urethral hypermobility in female stress urinary incontinence (SUI), defined as the complaint of involuntary urine leakage when the intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is increased. Structural and thermal features influence their mechanical properties, which may explain postoperative complications, e.g., erosion and urethral obstruction. We studied the effect of the mesh stiffness on urethral mobility at Valsalva maneuver, under impairment of the supporting structures (levator ani and/or ligaments), by using a numerical model. For that purpose, we modeled a sli
