Reversal of Intestinal Failure-Associated Liver Disease by Switching From a Combination Lipid Emulsion Containing Fish Oil to Fish Oil Monotherapy.

Intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) is a serious complication of parenteral nutrition (PN). Studies have shown that the amount and content of intravenous lipid emulsions (LEs) used is closely related to the development of IFALD. We report 2 cases of IFALD reversed by switching from a combination lipid emulsion containing fish oil to fish oil monotherapy (Omegaven; Fresenius Kabi Austria Gmbh, Graz, Austria). Patients initially received PN containing SMOFlipid 20% (SMOF; Fresenius Kabi Austria Gmbh, Graz, Austria), 2.0-3.0 g/kg/d, over 24 hours. When IFALD developed, LE was swit

Rhabdomyolysis following snapper fish consumption (Haff disease): a family affair.

This case describes the first report of Haff disease in Australia, where a family of three all presented with myalgia, after ingesting recently thawed, baked queen snapper fish, caught off the coast of Western Australia. All three members (mother, father and son) developed rhabdomyolysis; however, the son, who had a higher creatine kinase level, also developed an acute kidney injury, likely linked to his double fish consumption. All members were admitted for intravenous hydration and clinically improved. This case highlights the importance of dietary and environmental history in cases of rhabd

Genomic characterization of Nocardia seriolae strains isolated from diseased fish.

Members of the genus Nocardia are widespread in diverse environments; a wide range of Nocardia species are known to cause nocardiosis in several animals, including cat, dog, fish, and humans. Of the pathogenic Nocardia species, N. seriolae is known to cause disease in cultured fish, resulting in major economic loss. We isolated two N. seriolae strains, CK-14008 and EM15050, from diseased fish and sequenced their genomes using the PacBio sequencing platform. To identify their genomic features, we compared their genomes with those of other Nocardia species. Phylogenetic analysis showed that N. s

Renibacterium salmoninarum-The Causative Agent of Bacterial Kidney Disease in Salmonid Fish.

Renibacterium salmoninarum is one of the oldest known bacterial pathogens of fish. This Gram-positive bacterium is the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease, a chronic infection that is mostly known to infect salmonid fish at low temperatures. Externally, infected fish can display exophthalmia as well as blebs on the skin and ulcerations alongside haemorrhages at the base of the fins and alongside the lateral line. Internally, the kidney, heart, spleen and liver can show signs of swelling. Granulomas can be seen on various internal organs, as can haemorrhages, and the organs can be cover

Drinks like a fish: using zebrafish to understand alcoholic liver disease.

Steatosis is the most common consequence of acute alcohol abuse, such as occurs during a drinking binge. Acute alcohol induced steatosis may predispose to more severe hepatic disease. We have developed a model of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in zebrafish larvae to provide a system in which the genes and pathways that contribute to steatosis can be rapidly identified. Zebrafish larvae represent an attractive vertebrate model for studying acute ALD because they possess the pathways to metabolize alcohol, the liver is mature by 4 days post-fertilization (dpf), and alcohol can be simply added to

[Cytogenetic and in situ hybridization (FISH) follow-up in minimal residual disease].

Cytogenetic studies are an important tool for diagnosis, prognosis and minimal residual disease (MRD) follow up specially in oncohematology. Conventional cytogenetics, also known as G banding technique, brings complete information for the spectrum of aneuploidies and structural changes present in malignant cells with a sensitivity of 1-5% depending on the number of metaphases analyzed. FISH technique with a higher sensitivity, 10(-2)-10(-4), attempts to make up for one of the principal limitations of G banding which is the absence of metaphases, thus employing different probes and allowing the

Health problems associated with consumption of fish and the role of aquatic environments in the transmission of human diseases.

The majority of the numerous fish parasites are harmless to man and many domestic animals because when eaten with their fish hosts, they are digested. However, some of the fish parasites with larval stages in freshwater or marine teleosts have zoonotic potential if eaten raw or partially cooked. These are usually parasites, which have a piscivorous mammalian carnivore as their normal final host and are able to infect man because of the low host specificity of the adult stage. The major groups of fish parasite that are known as potentially dangerous pathogens of man belong to the helminth group

Exploring the use of fatty acid ethyl esters as a potential natural solution for the treatment of fish parasitic diseases.

Alternatives to conventional chemical treatments for parasitic diseases in fish are needed. Microalgal-sourced fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) have shown an antiparasitic effect against Gyrodactylus turnbulli infection in guppies. Here, we tested a range of commercial FAEEs of various carbon chain lengths and unsaturation levels against two fish parasites. Guppies and barramundi infected with G. turnbulli and Trichodina sp., respectively, were used. The most effective FAEE, after excluding those toxic to fish, was ethyl laurate (12:0). For both parasites, the LD50 was 18.75 μM within 250 min o

Tiny Fish, Big Hope: Zebrafish Unlocking Secrets to Fight Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder marked by the gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. This neuronal degradation causes motor symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and slowness of movement. Despite decades of research, current treatments remain limited to symptom management, highlighting the urgent need for deeper insights into PD mechanisms and new therapeutic approaches. Among model organisms, zebrafish (Danio rerio) have emerged as a valuable tool for PD research due to the possibility of genetic manipulation. Zebrafish can be engineered to car

Impact of Fish Intake Frequency on Cardiovascular Disease-Specific Survival in Hemodialysis Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in hemodialysis patients (HPs). As a food source, fish contains both CVD-preventive and CVD-promoting fatty acids; however, there is no consensus on fish consumption as a preventive measure for CVD in HPs. This single-center longitudinal cohort study aims to assess the impact of fish intake frequency (FIF) per week on CVD in Japanese HPs. METHODS: Upon the initiation of the study, 148 HPs were evaluated to determine the FIF, and blood samples were analyzed. These patients were then monitored for 6 years. The relationships

A mathematical model of Guinea worm disease in Chad with fish as intermediate transport hosts.

Guinea-worm disease (GWD) was thought to be almost eliminated in Chad when it reemerged in 2010. The disease now shows a peculiar pattern of spreading along Chari River and its tributaries, rather than clustering around a particular drinking water source. We create a mathematical model of GWD that includes the population dynamics of the parasite as well as the dynamics of its hosts (copepods, fish, humans, and domestic dogs). We calibrate our model based on data from the literature and validate it on the recent GWD annual incidence data from Chad. The effective reproduction number predicted by

Fish eye disease: a new familial condition with massive corneal opacities and dyslipoproteinaemia.

Fish eye disease (FED) is characterized by severe corneal opacities, causing impaired vision, and dyslipoproteinaemia: hypertriglyceridaemia, raised levels of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), triglyceride enrichment of low density lipoproteins (LDL) and reduction of high density lipoproteins (HDL). The disease is described in two unrelated families. In both there was a high proportion of low HDL in relatives without eye disease. VLDL, LDL and HDL had normal electrophoretic mobilities. The concentrations of VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides were increased fivefold. LDL cholesterol levels
