Identification of a mobilizable, multidrug-resistant genomic island in Myroides odoratimimus isolated from Tibetan pasture.

Strains of the environmental bacterium Myroides odoratimimus can cause human infections. However, treating M. odoratimimus infections can be difficult because of multidrug resistance in this organism. In this study, we isolated strain M. odoratimimus G13 from pastureland in Tibet, China. The minimum inhibitory concentration analysis suggested that strain G13 has resistance to multiple antibiotics, with an MIC for tetracycline of 168 mg/L. Whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis revealed that the genome of G13 was rich in virulence factor-encoding genes and antibiotic resistance gene

Isolation, characterization and evaluation of a novel phage against Elizabethkingia anophelis.

The rise of multidrug-resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis (E. anophelis) presents a significant public health challenge. Here, we report the isolation, morphological and biological characterization, and genomic analysis of a novel lytic bacteriophage, XANYB1, targeting E. anophelis. XANYB1 was isolated from hospital wastewater in Xi’an, China, using a clinical strain as the host. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that XANYB1 belongs to the order Caudoviricetes, featuring icosahedral heads and long, non-contractile tails. Whole-genome sequencing showed very low similarity to known phage

Infectious endocarditis caused by Elizabethkingia spp.: Two case reports and a literature review.

We report two cases of Elizabethkingia-related infective endocarditis, highlighting key risk factors such as prosthetic valve replacement. These cases underscore the need to consider endocarditis in the setting of persistent or recurrent bacteremia. Diagnosis proved challenging and required multiple imaging modalities, with positron emission tomography (PET) scan providing critical value when echocardiography was non-contributory. Management was complicated by the organism's intrinsic multidrug resistance and the rapid emergence of additional resistance during therapy. These cases emphasize th

In vitro and in vivo efficacy of vancomycin against Elizabethkingia species and the impact of increased vancomycin MICs.

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to evaluate the concordance of vancomycin susceptibility testing methods, its in vivo and in vitro efficacy, and the mechanisms underlying elevated MICs in Elizabethkingia spp. Vancomycin susceptibilities of 18 E. anophelis isolates were determined using multiple assays. The efficacy of vancomycin against five clinical isolates and one laboratory-induced mutant with an elevated vancomycin MIC was evaluated using time-kill assays and Galleria mellonella and murine models. Vancomycin MICs (16-32 mg/L) determined by broth microdilution were consistent with agar diluti

Soil chemistry and microbiome modulation through water irrigation containing oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide nanobubbles.

Nanobubble technology has shown considerable promise in sustainable agriculture due to its ability to enhance seed germination, plant growth, and soil quality without leaving harmful residues. While benefits are often attributed to improved soil aeration and soil texture changes (e.g., permeability), nanobubbles may also influence soil microbiome, an essential driver of plant health and nutrient cycling. This study systematically investigated how different nanobubble types-oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide-modulate soil chemistry and microbial community structure over a 4-week period. Multi

Balanced Expression of the Diiron Oxygenase BioE Is Essential for Biotin Homeostasis in Elizabethkingia meningoseptica.

Biotin is an essential cofactor for central metabolic pathways in all organisms. The newly identified BioE-BioL module constitutes a new biotin biosynthesis pathway, yet its mechanisms remain incompletely characterized. Phylogenetic analyses reveal widespread distribution of the bioE, including obligate intracellular Chlamydia, despite the genus lacking its cognate repressor BioL. Structural modeling and biochemical characterization of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica BioE (EmBioE) and Chlamydia psittaci BioE (CpBioE) reveal a conserved diiron oxygenase catalytic core but divergent oligomeric st

The clinical challenge of Elizabethkingia infections: multidrug resistance, epidemiology, and management strategies.

Elizabethkingia species, particularly E. anophelis, have emerged as formidable opportunistic pathogens causing severe infections such as meningitis, bacteremia, and pneumonia, with mortality rates ranging from 24% to 60%. This narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the complex resistance mechanisms of these bacteria, drawing on in vitro studies, genomic analyses, and observational clinical data. Where available, we indicate the level of supporting evidence, and highlight mechanisms supported by gene knockout experiments, single-strain proteomic analyses, or retrospective case se

Colonization and infection with a rare microorganism in a neonatal intensive care unit: three preterm infants with Elizabethkingia meningoseptica.

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is a widespread gram-negative bacillus in the environment, but a rarely reported human pathogen presenting mostly as nosocomial infections. Advances in neonatal intensive care facilities and usage of sophisticated medical devices strengthen the invasive infectious potential of the microorganism. Clinical manifestations usually include primary bacteremia, meningitis, nosocomial pneumoniae, intravascular catheter-related bacteremia and gastrointestinal and biliary tract infections. Lack of improved diagnostic systems in resource constrained settings, might be a cau

Noncontiguous finished genome sequence and description of Weeksella massiliensis sp. nov.

Strain FF8(T) (= CSUR P860 = DSM 28259) was isolated in Dakar, Senegal, from the urine of a 65-year-old man with acute cystitis. This strain shows a similarity of sequence of 16S rRNA of 98.38% with Weeksella virosa, and its GenBank accession numbers are HG931340 and CCMH00000000. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis had a poor score, ranging from 1.32 to 1.56, that did not allow identification of the bacterium. Using a polyphasic study made of phenotypic and genomic analyses, strain FF8(T) was a Gram-negative, aerobic rod and a member of the fa

Molecular epidemiology and emerging tet(X)-associated resistance of Elizabethkingia spp. in Taiwan, 2016-2022.

Elizabethkingia species are opportunistic gram-negative pathogens associated with nosocomial infections and limited therapeutic options. Longitudinal data characterizing antimicrobial resistance and molecular determinants in Taiwan remain scarce. A total of 191 non-duplicate Elizabethkingia clinical isolates were collected at the National Taiwan University Hospital between 2016 and 2022. Species identification was confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Elizabethkingia anophelis predominated (81.7%), followed by E. meningoseptica (9.9%) and E. miricola (7.9%). No major clone was identified. Genes in

Genomic insights into activated antimicrobial resistance of in situ hospital-wastewater biofilm.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly among carbapenemase-producing organisms, poses a major global health threat. Although hospital wastewater is considered an AMR hotspot, its functional contribution to resistance dynamics remains poorly defined. We developed in situ biofilms in hospital wastewater and applied integrated metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and culture-based analyses to characterize community structure and gene expression. Biofilms exhibited greater biomass and higher contamination with extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli than planktonic wastewater. B

'Candidatus Ornithobacterium hominis': insights gained from draft genomes obtained from nasopharyngeal swabs.

'Candidatus Ornithobacterium hominis' represents a new member of the Flavobacteriaceae detected in 16S rRNA gene surveys of people from South-East Asia, Africa and Australia. It frequently colonizes the infant nasopharynx at high proportional abundance, and we demonstrate its presence in 42 % of nasopharyngeal swabs from 12-month-old children in the Maela refugee camp in Thailand. The species, a Gram-negative bacillus, has not yet been cultured, but the cells can be identified in mixed samples by fluorescent hybridization. Here, we report seven genomes assembled from metagenomic data, two to i
