Critical fusion frequency in MS during mild induced hyperthermia.

By raising the body temperature of 0.5 degrees C the critical fusion frequency of a flickering light increases in normal subjects but decreases in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The change was present in 14 patients with definite MS and in 5 of 10 patients with probable MS. No clinical worsening was observed during the procedure or in the following hours.

Temporal characteristics of vesicular fusion in astrocytes: examination of synaptobrevin 2-laden vesicles at single vesicle resolution.

Astrocytes can release various gliotransmitters in response to stimuli that cause increases in intracellular Ca(2+) levels; this secretion occurs via a regulated exocytosis pathway. Indeed, astrocytes express protein components of the vesicular secretory apparatus. However, the detailed temporal characteristics of vesicular fusions in astrocytes are not well understood. In order to start addressing this issue, we used total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) to visualize vesicular fusion events in astrocytes expressing the fluorescent synaptobrevin 2 derivative, synapto-pHluor

Cone function studied with flicker electroretinogram during progressive retinal degeneration in RCS rats.

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat has a primary defect in retinal pigment epithelial cells that leads to the progressive loss of photoreceptors and central visual responsiveness. While most rods are lost by 90 days of age (P90), cones degenerate more slowly, and can be detected anatomically up to 2 years of age, despite massive neuronal death and retinal remodelling. To examine how this progressive degenerative process impacts on cone function, we recorded the electroretingram to white light flashes (1.37 log cd s m(-2)) presented at frequencies ranging from 3 to 50 Hz, under light adapt

Evaluation of Relative Afferent Pupillary Defect Using RAPDx Device in Patients with Optic Nerve Disease.

We previously reported the standard values of the amplitude and latency scores in the RAPDx device for evaluating relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD). Here, we evaluated RAPD in patients with optic nerve disease by using these standard values. Twenty-eight patients with current or previous optic nerve disease were enrolled in this study. Additionally, the data of 84 healthy subjects from our previous report were used as control data. We measured the amplitude and latency scores using RAPDx. We then compared their mean values and the percentages of individuals with standard values within

[The different forms of hypermetropia and the necessity of their precise correction (author's transl)].

The author presents a detailed analysis of hypermetropia. He defines its three pathogenetically important forms:--facultative, relative and absolute, starting from the principles of Donders and based upon the dioptrics of Gullstrand. The author then deals with the pathological processes caused by hypermetropia, especially with the formation of strabismus. Finally he discusses the effects of the three forms of hypermetropia and of the associated other deficiencies of refraction.

Experimental evidence for a transient system deficit in specific reading disability.

This paper summarizes the experimental evidence for a transient system deficit in specific reading disability. Differences have been found between controlled readers and specifically disabled readers in measurements of visible persistence, pattern contrast sensitivity and temporal or flicker contrast sensitivity. This transient system deficit was found in approximately 75% of the specifically reading disabled subjects tested. A further series of experiments failed to demonstrate differences in sustained system function between the two groups. Evidence is also presented which suggests that the

UNLABELLED: Circadian variation of chemosensitivity was examined under constant standardized metabolic and climatic conditions. Progressive hyperoxic hypercapnia tests and progressive isocapnic hypoxia tests were applied every 2 h in 10 healthy male subjects employing rebreathing (6 l spirometer). During the 24 h run they were confined to bed. They were allowed sleep at their convenience, but were woken for examination, and were given a low-protein isocaloric diet after each of the 13 tests. Psychomotor, physiological and cognitive effects of scopolamine and ephedrine in healthy man.

Three placebo-controlled double-blind studies in healthy volunteers were performed to reveal the psychophysiological effects of scopolamine, ephedrine and their combination. Single intravenous dose of scopolamine 6 micrograms/kg (scopolamine hydrobromide 7.4 micrograms/kg) impaired various psychomotor functions both subjectively and objectively. It caused sedation, impairment of coordinative and reactive skills, visual disturbances and impairment of shortterm memory. Oral scopolamine hydrobromide in single doses of 0.3 mg and 0.9 mg, or 0.9 mg b.d. for 3 days, had few effects. A slight impairm

Motion perception in optic neuropathy.

We tested motion perception in 15 eyes of 13 patients with optic neuropathy. Eleven of the eyes had optic neuritis. The motion perception paradigm tested subjects' ability to discriminate the direction of a global coherent motion signal amid varying levels of background noise. The results showed defective motion processing in eight of the 15 eyes. This defect was not due to low visibility (poor spatial resolution), since 11 of the 15 eyes had Snellen acuities of 20/20 or better. Neither was impaired motion perception due to decreased luminance sensitivity, since attenuating the display signal

Diagnostic features of the Favre-Goldmann syndrome.

Extensive retinal vascular disease was noted in three patients from two families with Favre-Goldmann syndrome. In addition to classical features they had pronounced leakage from some retinal vessels. Vessels were either opaque ('sclerotic') or non-perfused. Cystoid macular oedema was a contributing cause of decreased vision. Two of the three patients showed a discrepancy on electroretinography between single-flash photopic amplitudes and flicker fusion frequency. This may be characteristic of Favre-Goldmann syndrome.

[Fixation disparity in peripheral and central binocular vision under conditions of prismatic heterophoria (author's transl)].

A critical review of the literature shows that there are controversal interpretations of thephenomenon fixation disparity. The former findings of Ogle and coworkers are ascertained byinvertigator to close the central gap in the fusional patter. Formerly the gap was essentialdue to polarisation techiques. 1. Without central gap fixation disparity decreases, but remainssignificantly different from zero. 2. Diminution or closing of the gap leads to more preciseresults, since the position of the eyes is better controlled. 3. Straining the binocular vision with high prism power cortical tolerances

[The importance of an in-depth study of visual functions in patients with a traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula].

As many as 78 patients with traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula were examined. Apart from routine clinical examination we determined th flickering fusion frequency, pupil cycle time; we employed visocontrastoperimetry and fluorescent angiography to identify early disturbances in visual functions and allow some judgement about time course of changes in the preoperative and postoperative course of the condition. This should help us in dealing efficiently with visual disorders.

A review of the effects of diazepam on cognitive and psychomotor performance.

Studies evaluating the effects of diazepam (Valium) on psychomotor and cognitive functions are reviewed an integrated. The importance of the full and clear documentation of such drug effects lies in the wide usage of diazepam today for a variety of medical, psychiatric, and dental purposes. The various tasks used to assess drug effects were classified into six major groups based on apparent similarity of functions tapped. These groupings are: reflex speed; critical flicker fusion threshold; attention and vigilance; decision making; learning and memory; psychomotor performance. In all functions

Efficiency in Magnocellular Processing: A Common Deficit in Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Several neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) including Developmental Dyslexia (DD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but not Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), are reported to show deficits in global motion processing. Such behavioral deficits have been linked to a temporal processing deficiency. However, to date, there have been few studies assessing the temporal processing efficiency of the Magnocellular M pathways through temporal modulation. Hence, we measured achromatic flicker fusion thresholds at high and low contrast in nonselective samples of NDDs and neurotypicals (mean age

A bidirectional link between brain oscillations and geometric patterns.

Like hallucinogenic drugs, full-field flickering visual stimulation produces regular, geometric hallucinations such as radial or spiral patterns. Computational and theoretical models have revealed that the geometry of these hallucinations can be related to functional neuro-anatomy. However, while experimental evidence links both visual flicker and hallucinogenic drugs to upward and downward modulations of brain oscillatory activity, the exact relation between brain oscillations and geometric hallucinations remains a mystery. Here we demonstrate that, in human observers, this link is bidirectio
