Motion sickness in amphibians.

We explored the question of whether amphibians get motion sickness by exposing anurans (frogs) and urodeles (salamanders) to the provocative stimulus of parabolic aircraft flight. Animals were fed before flight, and the presence of vomitus in their containers after flight was used to indicate motion-induced emesis. None of the species that we studied vomited during the 8 to 10 parabolas of each flight. However, at least one specimen from each of the anuran species Rana rugosa, Rana nigromaculata, Hyla japonica, and Rhacophorus schlegelii vomited in a period of 0.5 to 42 h after flight. Some sp

Disorientation of animals in microgravity.

Disorientation responses of animals exposed to microgravity produced by parabolic aircraft flights and also in-space experiments were reviewed. Disoriented postures in floating are largely species-dependent. Reflexive lowered tone of gravity-bearing extensor muscles by labyrinthectomy is not seen in mammals (hamster and monkey) and frog, though dorsiflexion of the neck and the trunk is not so remarkable in hamster and monkey as in frog. In weightlessness, fundamental vestibular reflexes may be affected (righting reflex in cat), but coordinated performance can be easily compensated by visual fu

GABAergic Retinal Ganglion Cells Projecting to the Superior Colliculus Mediate the Looming-Evoked Flight Response.

The looming stimulus-evoked flight response to approaching predators is a defensive behavior in most animals. However, how looming stimuli are detected in the retina and transmitted to the brain remains unclear. Here, we report that a group of GABAergic retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) projecting to the superior colliculus (SC) transmit looming signals from the retina to the brain, mediating the looming-evoked flight behavior by releasing GABA. GAD2-Cre and vGAT-Cre transgenic mice were used in combination with Cre-activated anterograde or retrograde tracer viruses to map the inputs to specific G

Effects of sequential aeromedical evacuations following traumatic brain injury in swine.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) represent a significant percentage of critical injuries in military conflicts. Following injury, wounded warfighters are often subjected to multiple aeromedical evacuations (AE) and associated hypobaria, yet the impact in TBI patients remains to be characterized. This study evaluated the impact of two consecutive simulated AEs in a fluid-percussion TBI model in swine to characterize these effects. METHODS: Following instrumentation, anesthetized Yorkshire swine underwent a frontal TBI via fluid-percussion. A hypobaric chamber was then used to simul

Arginine Kinase 1 supports energy homeostasis in Drosophila flight muscle development.

In Drosophila, Arginine kinase 1 (Argk1) is involved in maintaining ATP homeostasis during bursts of activity in tissues with high and variable rates of energy turnover such as muscle. However, its role beyond stress conditions is less understood. Argk1 is the sole phosphagen kinase with dynamic expression throughout flight muscle development. Here, we show that at least one of the Argk1 isoforms localizes to mitochondria in the developing myofibers, and its function is also necessary for proper flight muscle development. Depleting Argk1 specifically in the muscles lead to low ATP level and NA

Wings and halteres act as coupled dual oscillators in flies.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of orthognathic surgery is to correct facial deformity and dental malocclusion and to obtain normal orofacial function. However, there are controversies of whether orthognathic surgery might have any negative influence on temporomandibular (TM) joint. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of orthognathic surgery on articular disc position and temporomandibular joint symptoms of skeletal CI II patients by means of magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this purpose, fifteen patients with skeletal CI II malocclusion, aged 19-32 years (mea

Unexpected Performance in Developing Birds.

Birds are well known for their ability to fly, and flight-capable adult birds have many anatomical specializations for meeting the demands of aerial locomotion. Juvenile birds in altricial species typically acquire these specializations close to fledging and leave the nest with some flight capability. In contrast, juveniles in most precocial species begin navigating their environment with rudimentary anatomies and may not develop full-sized wings or musculoskeletal apparatuses for several months. This manuscript explores how juvenile birds achieve high levels of locomotor performance in the ab

Possible Mechanisms of Axonal Transport Disturbances in Mouse Spinal Motoneurons Induced by Hypogravity.

The data obtained by transcriptome analysis of lumbar spinal cord segments, sciatic nerve, and the respiratory diaphragm of the mice performed after a space flight on board Bion-M1 biosatellite were processed by bioinformatic methods aimed at elucidation of the regularities in hypogravity-induced transcriptome changes in various compartments of motor neurons. The study revealed abnormalities of axonal transport in spinal motor neurons provoked by weightlessness. These data agree with the results of electron microscopy examination of the spinal cord in experimental animals. In space group mice

Cyclic bouts of extreme bradycardia counteract the high metabolism of frugivorous bats.

Active flight requires the ability to efficiently fuel bursts of costly locomotion while maximizing energy conservation during non-flying times. We took a multi-faceted approach to estimate how fruit-eating bats (Uroderma bilobatum) manage a high-energy lifestyle fueled primarily by fig juice. Miniaturized heart rate telemetry shows that they use a novel, cyclic, bradycardic state that reduces daily energetic expenditure by 10% and counteracts heart rates as high as 900 bpm during flight. Uroderma bilobatum support flight with some of the fastest metabolic incorporation rates and dynamic circu

Waggle-dance-recruited honeybees expect landscape structures.

Honeybee foragers explore the environment before they start foraging, following dances, or performing dances. Foragers are therefore familiar with the landscape surrounding the hive during their foraging career. Here, we ask whether dance-recruited honeybees expect the landscape features that the dancer experienced during its outbound foraging flights. If this were the case, the dance-recruited honeybees would behave differently according to whether the landscape features they experienced during their outbound flight matched the expected features. In our experiments, the dance followers (recru

The largest flying reptile from Gondwana: a new specimen of Tropeognathus cf. T. mesembrinus Wellnhofer, 1987 (Pterodactyloidea, Anhangueridae) and other large pterosaurs from the Romualdo Formation, Lower Cretaceous, Brazil.

A very large pterosaur (MN 6594-V) from the Romualdo Formation (Aptian/Albian), Santana Group, Araripe Basin, is described. The specimen is referred to Tropeognathus cf. T. mesembrinus mainly due to the presence of a low and blunt frontoparietal crest, the comparatively low number of teeth and the inclined dorsal part of the occipital region. Two distinct wingspan measurements for pterosaurs are introduced: the maximized wingspan (maxws), which essentially consists of doubling the addition of all wing elements and the length of the scapula or the coracoid (the smaller of the two), and the norm

A random walk description of individual animal movement accounting for periods of rest.

Animals do not move all the time but alternate the period of actual movement (foraging) with periods of rest (e.g. eating or sleeping). Although the existence of rest times is widely acknowledged in the literature and has even become a focus of increased attention recently, the theoretical approaches to describe animal movement by calculating the dispersal kernel and/or the mean squared displacement (MSD) rarely take rests into account. In this study, we aim to bridge this gap. We consider a composite stochastic process where the periods of active dispersal or 'bouts' (described by a certain b

Organization of the primary somatosensory cortex and wing representation in the Big Brown Bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

Bats are the only mammals capable of true powered flight. The bat wing exhibits specializations, allowing these animals to perform complicated flight maneuvers like landing upside-down, and hovering. The wing membrane contains various tactile receptors, including hair-associated Merkel receptors that might be involved in stabilizing bat flight. Here, we studied the neuronal representation of the wing membrane in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) of the anesthetized Big Brown Bat, Eptesicus fuscus, using tactile stimulation with calibrated monofilaments (von Frey hairs) while recording from

Association of visual objects and olfactory cues in Drosophila.

Context-dependent preferences in a choice between an upper and a lower visual object of otherwise identical appearance were recorded during stationary flight of the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, in a flight simulator. The test animal was held in a fixed orientation at the center of a wing-beat processor that converts attempted turns into counter-rotations of a surrounding cylindrical panorama. This allowed the fly to maneuver the preferred object into the actual direction of flight. Single flies were trained to avoid a course toward the visual object that had been associated with the aver

Validation of Preload Assessment Technologies at Altitude in a Porcine Model of Hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic preload assessment measures including pulse pressure variation (PPV), stroke volume variation (SVV), pleth variability index (PVI), and hypotension prediction index (HPI) have been utilized clinically to guide fluid management decisions in critically ill patients. These values aid in the balance of correcting hypotension while avoiding over-resuscitation leading to respiratory failure and increased mortality. However, these measures have not been previously validated at altitude or in those with temporary abdominal closure (TAC). METHODS: Forty-eight female swine (39 ± 2

Odor tracking in flying Drosophila requires visual reafference and compass neurons.

Flying Drosophila critically depend on high-contrast visual surroundings to localize odor sources in still air, yet the neural mechanisms of visual integration for active odor tracking are unknown. We demonstrate that E-PG neurons-head direction cells in the central complex-work in concert with self-generated visual motion signals to maintain a stable heading metric during olfactory navigation in flight. Using a magnetic tether system and a digital "visual clamp", we show that removing the visual feedback generated by a fly's own turns (reafference) causes the animal to lose its heading within

Life sciences space missions. Overview.

It has been known for many years that weightlessness induces changes in numerous physiological systems: the cardiovascular system declines in both aerobic capacity and orthostatic tolerance; there is a reduction in fluid and electrolyte balance, hematocrit, and certain immune parameters; bone and muscle mass and strength are reduced; various neurological responses include space motion sickness and posture and gate alterations. These responses are caused by the hypokinesia of weightlessness, the cephalic fluid shift, the unloading of the vestibular system, stress, and the altered temporal envir

Nosema ceranae infection reduces flight ability in queen and worker honey bees.

Nosema ceranae, a fungal pathogen that infects honey bees' midgut epithelial cells, is known to impact honey bees negatively in many aspects. Given that this pathogen changes honey bee physiology and causes a higher hunger status, we hypothesized that it may negatively impact the flight ability in honey bees. We fed newly emerged workers and virgin queens with 100,000 N. ceranae spores, let the bees age for 10 days, then tested their flight ability using flight mills. We found that the flight duration and distance of worker bees were significantly reduced by N. ceranae infection with a decreas

A century and a half of research on the evolution of insect flight.

The gill and paranotal lobe theories of insect wing evolution were both proposed in the 1870s. For most of the 20th century, the paranotal lobe theory was more widely accepted, probably due to the fundamentally terrestrial tracheal respiratory system; in the 1970s, some researchers advocated for an elaborated gill ("pleural appendage") theory. Lacking transition fossils, neither theory could be definitively rejected. Winged insects are abundant in the fossil record from the mid-Carboniferous, but insect fossils are vanishingly rare earlier, and all earlier fossils are from primitively wingless

Dynamic flight stability of hovering droneflies with unilateral wing damage.

Insects with damaged wings can still maintain flight and perform complex maneuvers, highlighting their remarkable flight adaptability. Compared with the study on intact insects' flight stability, research on the flight stability of wing-damaged insects remains limited. Building on our previous measured data on wing kinematics of wing-damaged droneflies (Eristalis tenax), this work further investigates the impact of unilateral wing damage on insect flight stability. Mainly addressing two key questions: (1) whether the longitudinal and lateral stability of insects with asymmetric wing motion can
