Prioritizing Artificial Intelligence Opportunities for Food as Health in the U.S. Agrifood Value Chain.

Food and health are converging across the agrifood value chain, and artificial intelligence (AI) is widely promoted to operationalize the link, yet firms cannot tell which food-as-health opportunities current AI can address. We identify the agrifood industry's highest-priority food-as-health opportunities in the United States and assess, against the peer-reviewed AI literature, how far current AI can address each. A PRISMA 2020 systematic review of 34 U.S.-focused studies establishes the problem space; a Jobs-to-Be-Done map organizes ninety opportunity areas; a blind discovery forum with 37 se

Effects of a formulation of the veterinary drug moxidectin on the performance of a plant-insect food chain.

The increasing use of veterinary anthelmintics, which mainly enter the environment via livestock feces, raises concerns about side effects on non-target organisms in agricultural landscapes. While most studies have focused on species at a single trophic level that are directly exposed to these drugs, little is known about their indirect effects on interacting species across trophic levels and the associated ecological functions. To address this research gap, we conducted the first experimental study on a terrestrial species assemblage exposed to soil spiked with a formulation of the commonly u

The effects of COVID-19 on agriculture supply chain, food security, and environment: a review.

COVID-19 has a deep impact on the economic, environmental, and social life of the global population. Particularly, it disturbed the entire agriculture supply chain due to a shortage of labor, travel restrictions, and changes in demand during lockdowns. Consequently, the world population faced food insecurity due to a reduction in food production and booming food prices. Low-income households face food security challenges because of limited income generation during the pandemic. Thus, there is a need to understand comprehensive strategies to meet the complex challenges faced by the food industr

Polystyrene microplastics alter the trophic transfer and biotoxicity of fluoxetine in an aquatic food chain.

Microplastics (MPs) and fluoxetine are ubiquitous emerging pollutants in aquatic environments that may interact with each other due to the carrier effects of MPs, posing unpredictable risks to non-target organisms. However, limited studies have focused on the carrier effects of MPs in the aquatic food chain. This study evaluated the influences of polystyrene MPs on the trophic transfer and biotoxicity of fluoxetine in a simple food chain composed of brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) and zebrafish (Danio rerio). The finding reveals that carrier effects of MPs enhanced the accumulation of waterborn

Sequence Types and Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of Salmonella Typhimurium in the Food Chain in Singapore.

Salmonella remains a significant foodborne pathogen globally with S. Typhimurium presenting as a frequently occurring serovar. This study aimed to characterize 67 S. Typhimurium isolates from humans, food, farms, and slaughterhouses collected in Singapore from 2016 to 2017. Using whole-genome sequencing analysis, the isolates were found to belong to either ST19 (n = 33) or ST36 (n = 34). ST36 predominated in human intestinal and chicken isolates, while human extra-intestinal and non-chicken food isolates belonged to ST19. Plasmids were predicted in 88.1% (n = 59) of the isolates with the most

Characterization of Food Chain Clostridioides difficile Isolates in Terms of Ribotype and Antimicrobial Resistance.

The aim of this study was to characterize C. difficile isolates from the farm, abattoir, and retail outlets in Ireland in terms of ribotype and antibiotic resistance (vancomycin, erythromycin, metronidazole, moxifloxacin, clindamycin, and rifampicin) using PCR and E-test methods, respectively. The most common ribotype in all stages of the food chain (including retail foods) was 078 and a variant (RT078/4). Less commonly reported (014/0, 002/1, 049, and 205) and novel (RT530, 547, and 683) ribotypes were also detected, but at lower frequencies. Approximately 72% (26/36 tested) of the isolates t

Wholegenome sequencing as the gold standard approach for control of Listeria monocytogenes in the food chain.

Listeria monocytogenes has been implicated in numerous outbreaks and related deaths of listeriosis. In food production, L. monocytogenes occurs in raw food material and above all, through postprocessing contamination. The use of next-generation sequencing technologies such as whole-genome sequencing (WGS) facilitates foodborne outbreak investigations, pathogen source tracking and tracing geographic distributions of different clonal complexes, routine microbiological/epidemiological surveillance of listeriosis, and quantitative microbial risk assessment. WGS can also be used to predict various

Characteristics of Quinolone Resistance in Salmonella spp. Isolates from the Food Chain in Brazil.

Salmonella spp. is an important zoonotic pathogen related to foodborne diseases. Despite that quinolones/fluoroquinolones are considered a relevant therapeutic strategy against resistant isolates, the increase in antimicrobial resistance is an additional difficulty in controlling bacterial infections caused by Salmonella spp. Thus, the acquisition of resistance to quinolones in Salmonella spp. is worrisome to the scientific community along with the possibility of transmission of resistance through plasmids. This study investigated the prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR)

Manganese and copper imbalance in the food chain constituents in relation to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The objective of the study was to investigate the possible role of manganese and copper (Mn/Cu) imbalance of the food chain in the focally increased occurrence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Mn and Cu concentrations in soil, drinking water and foodstuffs collected from households in the region of focal accumulation of CJD patients and the control region were measured by FAAS. Considerably higher Mn/Cu ratios in the studied region than those in the control region were found for soil (49.3 vs. 21.1), honey (8.05 vs. 4.86), and for the main local food items: potatoes (2.09 vs. 1.07) and brea

Antimicrobial Resistance Along the Food Chain: Spread and Integrated Strategies for Mitigation and Control.

The development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the emergence of multiresistant pathogens represent a growing global threat to both human and animal health. Beyond the excessive and improper use of antimicrobials in human medicine, irrational use in veterinary medicine, agriculture, and aquaculture significantly contributes to the selection and spread of resistant microorganisms, which can enter the food chain and reach humans through food consumption or handling. Based on results from a recent meta-analysis, the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant foodborne pathogens in food samples e

Modeling the risk of introducing cyst-infected meat pork into the food chain in Benin.

BACKGROUND: Poorly cooked pork containing Taenia solium cestode larvae contributes to human cysticercosis, a neglected zoonotic disease. Pork is consumed by a majority of the Benin population, and the cooking of popular dishes may not be sufficient to destroy cestode larvae. This study's aim was to estimate the risk of allowing pork contaminated with Taenia solium cysticerci into the food chain. METHODS: A stochastic risk assessment was developed in R to model the risk resulting from the three scenarios leading to contaminated pork being introduced into the food chain. The model was parameter

Coccidiostats in animal production: residue depletion, and cross-contamination in the feed-food chain.

Coccidiostats are used in animal production to control infections caused by Eimeria spp., particularly in poultry. While these compounds are effective in preventing coccidiosis and maintaining production efficiency, their use raises concerns regarding the occurrence of residues in the feed-food chain. This review summarises current knowledge on residue occurrence, transfer to food of animal origin, and depletion of coccidiostats following authorised use. Special attention is given to cross-contamination during feed manufacturing, which represents one of the sources of unintended exposure of no

Aspergillus fumigatus in the Food Production Chain and Azole Resistance: A Growing Concern for Consumers.

Aspergillosis is a fungal disease caused by the inhalation of Aspergillus spores, with Aspergillus fumigatus being the primary causative agent. This thermotolerant fungus affects both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals, posing a significant public health concern. In recent years, the detection of A. fumigatus in food products and production environments has raised questions about its potential role as an additional route of exposure. Furthermore, the emergence of azole-resistant strains in agricultural settings highlights the need to better understand its transmission dynamics a

Computational simulation of bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of antibiotics mechanisms in aquatic food chain.

Numerous antibiotics have been detected in aquatic ecosystems and induced severe toxic effects on aquatic organisms. However, mechanisms of bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of antibiotics are not adequately discussed, to the best of our knowledge. In this context, the bidirectional selective effect values (BSEV) and trophic transfer efficiency ratio (TTER) of 24 antibiotics in a simulated food chain (Chlorella sorokiniana-Daphnia magna-Danio rerio) were first calculated to mirror the bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Based on estimates above, the multi-output machine learning (ML) mode

Asymptomatic Carriage of Listeria monocytogenes by Animals and Humans and Its Impact on the Food Chain.

Humans and animals can become asymptomatic carriers of Listeria monocytogenes and introduce the pathogen into their environment with their feces. In turn, this environmental contamination can become the source of food- and feed-borne illnesses in humans and animals, with the food production chain representing a continuum between the farm environment and human populations that are susceptible to listeriosis. Here, we update a review from 2012 and summarize the current knowledge on the asymptomatic carrier statuses in humans and animals. The data on fecal shedding by species with an impact on th

How Can We Better Detect Unauthorized GMOs in Food and Feed Chains?

Current GMO detection systems have limited abilities to detect unauthorized genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Here, we propose a new workflow, based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, to overcome this problem. In providing information about DNA sequences, this high-throughput workflow can distinguish authorized and unauthorized GMOs by strengthening the tools commonly used by enforcement laboratories with the help of NGS technology. In addition, thanks to its massive sequencing capacity, this workflow could be used to monitor GMOs present in the food and feed chain. In view o

Prevalence of Taenia solium cysticercosis in pigs entering the food chain in western Kenya.

Three hundred forty-three pigs slaughtered and marketed in western Kenya were subjected to lingual examination and HP10 Ag-ELISA for the serological detection of Taenia solium antigen. When estimates were adjusted for the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic assays, prevalence of T. solium cysticercosis estimated by lingual exam and HP10 Ag-ELISA was between 34.4% (95% confidence interval (CI) 19.4-49.4%) and 37.6% (95% CI 29.3-45.9%), respectively. All pigs, however, were reported to have passed routine meat inspection. Since T. solium poses a serious threat to public health, these r

A High-Performance Artificial Olfactory Chip for Real-Time Cold Chain Food Freshness Monitoring.

Intelligent food freshness monitoring systems are in urgent demand for food safety and quality assurance in modern cold chain transportation. Conventional monitoring techniques are rendered impractical within the hermetic confines of refrigeration units. Conversely, the utilization of electronic olfactory systems to discern distinct volatile molecules emitted by food stored during the deterioration process presents an effective monitoring remedy. In this study, an artificial olfactory chip featuring a nine-box-grid configured gas sensor array (9-Array) has been designed for smart cold chain ma
