Contextual fear cues inhibit eating in food-deprived male and female rats.

Previously we have shown that food-deprived male and female rats inhibit food consumption when presented with a discrete conditioned stimulus that signals danger. Here, in a series of three experiments, we examined whether contextual conditioned stimuli can exert the same effect. Experiment 1 paired a distinct context with footshocks, to examine food intake in food-deprived rats upon re-exposure to the context. Experiment 2 used a discrimination protocol with two alternating contexts; rats were given food in one, and received footshocks in the other. This protocol allowed us to monitor food co

Oxytocin polyuria and polydipsia is blocked by NaCl administration in food-deprived male rats.

We examined the effects of NaCl injections on the polydipsia and polyuria induced by subcutaneous oxytocin (OT) administration in food-deprived male rats. During the first 12 h of the treatment day, both food deprivation and OT administration increased urine excretion but reduced water intake, water balance (fluid intake minus urine volume) and body weight. OT treatment enhanced urine excretion and the reduction in water balance and body weight without reducing the water intake of food-deprived animals. Analysis of the physiological effects of OT administration showed increases in urinary sodi

Combined naloxone and fluoxetine on deprivation-induced binge eating of palatable foods in rats.

Opioid antagonism and serotonergic stimulation is associated with macronutrient-specific hypophagia in animals. In the present study we evaluated their systemic effect alone, and in combination, at various doses, on the intake of sweet carbohydrate-rich and sweet fat-rich foods, tastes, and nutrients that are typical of binge-food items. Low-dose (1 mg/kg) naloxone, alone, preferentially suppressed fat-rich intake while low-dose (2.5 mg/kg) fluoxetine, alone, preferentially suppressed carbohydrate-rich intake. Each drug at these doses, combined with various doses of the other (2.5-10 mg/kg flu

Induction of gastric lesions and hypoglycemic response by food deprivation in streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

Overnight fasting causes hemorrhagic lesions in the stomach of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats, but the pathogenetic mechanism remains unknown. The present study was performed to investigate the pathogenesis of such lesions developed in STZ-diabetic rats after starvation, mainly in relation to blood glucose changes. A single injection of STZ (70 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) induced hyperglycemic conditions one week after the administration, and high blood glucose levels (BGL: > 350 mg%) remained up to three weeks later. The STZ-diabetic rats developed gastric lesions with the marked re

Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate and glutamine supplementation during refeeding of food-deprived rats.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) and glutamine supplementation in an experimental model of denutrition that provides well-characterized disturbances of amino acid patterns. Male Wistar rats (187 +/- 11 g; five in each group) were starved for 3 days and then refed for 7 days with an oral diet (192 kcal kg-1.day-1 and 2.25 g of nitrogen kg-1.day-1), supplemented with 0.19 g of nitrogen kg-1.day-1 in the form of OKG, glutamine, or casein (control group). Food deprivation induced a fall in most tissue amino acids, with the notable exception

Effects of food deprivation on the feedback regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis of the rat.

We have studied the effects of food deprivation on the plasma concentrations of T4, T3, and TSH, the TSH MCR, the pituitary TSH content, and the pituitary TSH response to TRH in female rats. Two days before the beginning of the experiment all rats were prepared with chronic intraatrial catheters through which TRH (100 ng/100 g BW) or [125I]iodo-TSH was administered, and sequential blood samples were obtained. The plasma concentrations of T4 and T3 in food-deprived rats were significantly (P less than 0.05) reduced compared to those in control rats 6, but not 2, days after food removal. Despite

Devazepide attenuates dl-fenfluramine-induced suppression of gastric emptying but not food intake in the 17 h food-deprived rat.

Recently a number of studies have provided evidence which suggests that CCK and 5-HT interact in the control of food intake. The present experiments further examine this mechanism and the possibility that CCK and 5-HT interact in the control of gastric emptying. The selective CCK-A receptor antagonist, devazepide, (0.03-3.0 mg/kg) administered alone had no intrinsic effect on gastric emptying. Devazepide (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg) blocked dl-fenfluramine-induced (3.0 mg/kg) suppression of gastric emptying. However, devazepide (0.03-3.0 mg/kg) failed to attenuate the anorectic effect of the same dose

An analysis of food and beverage advertising on bus shelters in a deprived area of Northern England.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the extent of food and beverage advertising on bus shelters in a deprived area of the UK, to identify the healthfulness of advertised products, and any differences by level of deprivation. The study also sought to assess the creative strategies used and extent of appeal to young people. DESIGN: Images of bus shelter advertisements were collected via in person photography (in 2019) and Google Street View (photos recorded in 2018). Food and beverage advertisements were grouped into one of seventeen food categories and classified as healthy/less healthy using the UK Nutrie

Stress and food deprivation: linking physiological state to migration success in a teleost fish.

Food deprivation is a naturally occurring stressor that is thought to influence the ultimate life-history strategy of individuals. Little is known about how food deprivation interacts with other stressors to influence migration success. European populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta) exhibit partial migration, whereby a portion of the population smoltifies and migrates to the ocean, and the rest remain in their natal stream. This distinct, natural dichotomy of life-history strategies provides an excellent opportunity to explore the roles of energetic state (as affected by food deprivation)

Carbohydrate energy reserves and effects of food deprivation in male and female rainbow trout.

We investigated the effects of nutritional state on carbohydrate, lipid, and protein stores in the heart, liver, and white skeletal muscle of male and female rainbow trout. For fed animals we also partitioned glycogen into fractions based on acid solubility. Fish (10-14 months-old, ~400-500 g) were held at 14 °C and either fed (1% of body weight, every other day) or deprived of food for 14 days. Under fed conditions, glycogen was increased 54% in ventricles from males compared with females, and elevated in the liver (87%) and white muscle (70%) in sexually-maturing versus immature males. Food-deprived activity stress decreased the activity of the histaminergic neuron system in rats.

The hypothalamus, which is rich in histaminergic neurons, is highly sensitive to aversive stimuli such as stress. Histamine H3 receptors, which regulate histamine release from the presynaptic site, are associated with stress-induced brain activity. In this study, we investigated the changes of histamine content and histamine H1 and H3 receptors in the brains of rats subjected to stress induced through food deprivation and physical activity on a running wheel (food-deprived activity stress). For purposes of comparison, we also examined the stressful effects of forced swimming on the histaminerg

The effects of short-term food deprivation on caloric intake in eating-disordered subjects.

The primary aim of this experimental investigation was to examine the effects of short-term dietary restriction on caloric consumption in eating disordered subjects. Subjects with bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and overweight non-eating disordered subjects, attended a laboratory experiment during which they were randomly assigned to either a 1 h or a 6 h food deprivation condition prior to being served a multi-item buffet. The primary measure of interest was calories consumed during the laboratory experiment. Subjects deprived of food for 6 h consumed significantly more calories at th

Heat stress causes excessive drinking in fed and food deprived pregnant goats.

Water intake was studied in six goats during late pregnancy to investigate if heat stress induces primary polydipsia. The goats were fed twice daily or deprived of food for 24 hr to avoid postprandial drinking and induce hyponatremia. Signs of stress was evaluated by determination of plasma cortisol concentration. Ambient temperature was increased from 20 degrees C to 38.0-39.5 degrees C for 5.15 hr. Water temperature was 35 +/- 1 degree C during heat stress. Fed goats started to drink 13 +/- 3 min after the heaters were turned on and water diuresis developed in five of them. The body weight i

Influence of chronic food deprivation on structure-function relationship of juvenile rat fast muscles.

In the present study, we analyze the influence of chronic undernutrition on protein expression, muscle fiber type composition, and fatigue resistance of the fast extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle of male juvenile rats (45 ± 3 days of life; n = 25 and 31 rats for control and undernourished groups, respectively). Using 2D gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, we identified in undernourished muscles 12 proteins up-regulated (8 proteins of the electron transport chain and the glycolytic pathway, 2 cross-bridge proteins, chaperone and signaling proteins that are related to the stress resp

Intraparaventricular neuropeptide Y and ghrelin induce learned behaviors that report food deprivation in rats.

Rats were trained to discriminate between 2 and 22-h food deprivation in a choice paradigm. During tests, 20 min of food consumption eliminated internal stimuli associated with 22-h food deprivation. In other tests, rats food-restricted for 2 h were given neuropeptide Y or ghrelin by administration into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. Both neurochemicals induced effects similar to those following 22-h food restriction (increased behavior appropriate for 22-h deprivation). These findings suggest that internal stimuli produced by 22-h food deprivation are altered by food consump

Food deprivation inhibits estrous behavior in hormone-treated Syrian hamsters despite elevated estradiol levels.

Estradiol and progesterone (P) induce female mammalian reproductive behaviors, which are, in turn, sensitive to food availability. When ovariectomized, steroid-primed hamsters are food deprived for 48 h, estrous behavior is suppressed. While this suppression of estrous behavior may be due to alterations in neural steroid receptor levels, it is also possible that decreased levels of circulating estradiol could be involved in mediating this suppression. Ovariectomized Syrian hamsters given varying doses of estradiol benzoate (EB) and P were tested to determine whether increasing doses of sex ste

Hypocholesterolemic phospholipid transfer protein knockout mice exhibit a normal glucocorticoid response to food deprivation.

OBJECTIVES: Glucocorticoids, adrenal-derived steroid hormones, facilitate the physiological response to stress. High-density lipoproteins (HDL) are considered the primary source of cholesterol used for glucocorticoid synthesis in mice. Phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) is a key player in HDL formation. In the current study we tested the hypothesis that HDL deficiency associated with genetic lack of PLTP negatively impacts the adrenal steroid function. METHODS: We determined the glucocorticoid response to overnight food deprivation stress and the adrenal lipid and genetic phenotype of wild-

Protective Effect of Intestinal Helminthiasis Against Tuberculosis Progression Is Abrogated by Intermittent Food Deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is still a major challenge for humankind. Because regions with the highest incidence also have a high prevalence of helminthiasis and nutritional scarcity, we wanted to understand the impact of these on TB progression. METHODS: We have developed an experimental murine model for active TB in C3HeB/FeJ, coinfected with Trichuris muris and Heligmosomoides polygyrus nematodes, and exposed to an environmental mycobacterium (M. manresensis) and intermittent fasting. Cause-effect relationships among these factors were explored with Partial Least Squares Path modelling (

A tryptophan-rich protein diet efficiently restores sleep after food deprivation in the rat.

Sleep depends on the quantity and quality of the diet. Several studies have shown that food deprivation results in a reduction in sleep duration. It has also been demonstrated that in the newborn, the supply of certain essential amino acids improves sleep through their action on the synthesis of specific neurotransmitters. The aim of the present study was to test if the quantity and/or quality of dietary protein could improve the recovery of sleep during re-feeding after caloric deprivation. Sleep parameters were compared in rats fed ad libitum, food restricted during 4 days, or reefed isocalo
