Access to healthy food retailers among formerly incarcerated individuals.

OBJECTIVE: To assess access to healthy food retailers among formerly incarcerated individuals. DESIGN: Using linked data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health and the Modified Retail Food Environment Index, the present study applies multivariate logistic regression to assess the association between incarceration and (i) living in a food desert and (ii) having low access to healthy food retailers. To account for unobserved heterogeneity, additional analyses are performed comparing formerly incarcerated individuals with persons arrested or convicted for a crime but

Living in poisoning environments: Invisible risks and human adaptation.

This article describes the hidden natural chemical contaminants present in a unique desert environment and their health consequences on ancient populations. Currently, millions of people are affected worldwide by toxic elements such as arsenic. Using data gathered from Atacama Desert mummies, we discuss long-term exposure and biocultural adaptation to toxic elements. The rivers that bring life to the Atacama Desert are paradoxically laden with arsenic and other minerals that are invisible and tasteless. High intake of these toxic elements results in severe health and behavioral problems, and e

First draft genome assembly of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria.

Background: At the time of publication, the most devastating desert locust crisis in decades is affecting East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and South-West Asia. The situation is extremely alarming in East Africa, where Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia face an unprecedented threat to food security and livelihoods. Most of the time, however, locusts do not occur in swarms, but live as relatively harmless solitary insects. The phenotypically distinct solitarious and gregarious locust phases differ markedly in many aspects of behaviour, physiology and morphology, making them an excellent model to stud

Inequalities in access to food in Brazil: a scoping review with a racial and gender focus and policy recommendations.

Vulnerable populations, such as women and Black individuals, face greater physical and economic challenges in accessing food, revealing that food environments are structured as a reflection of the country's social inequalities. In this context, this study aimed to conduct a scoping review in order to identify studies on food access, acquisition, and availability in Brazil, with a specific focus on gender and race/skin color. The study also aimed to identify recommendations for policymakers in designing public policies to improve food access in Brazil, while considering the existing inequalitie

Cash to carrots: Testing food environment mediation of cash transfer effects on children's diet in the Baby's First Years Study.

In the US, low-income children have poorer dietary behaviors than high-income children and suffer disproportionately from nutrition-related chronic diseases. A growing literature examines whether food environments contribute to nutritional inequality, given evidence that low-income families differentially concentrate in neighborhoods characterized by limited access to healthy foods. Here we use a rigorous, randomized controlled trial (RCT) of poverty reduction among 901 low-income families to test whether improvements in the food environment mediate a demonstrated effect of cash transfers on c

Implementing a Covid-19 Testing Intervention in African American Testing Deserts in Chicago: an Academic-Community Partnership to Promote Covid-19 Health Equity.

PURPOSE: To design, implement, and evaluate a church-based community intervention to provide access to COVID-19 testing in African American neighborhoods in Chicago identified as testing deserts. METHODS: In collaboration with the Alive Faith Network (AFN), we created a network of church-based COVID-19 testing sites in underserved African American Chicago neighborhoods identified as testing deserts. Sites offered free SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction-based testing, culturally tailored education, and linkage to care and social resources. Over time, we transitioned to community sites due to

Case report: illegal immigration via overloaded vans and the effects on a trauma system.

The Arizona-Mexico border consists of 375 square miles of rural desert where temperature extremes, excessive sun exposure, and a lack of food and water are common. The desert poses an especially deadly threat to immigrants who attempt to cross it on foot. In an effort to smuggle humans across this region, smugglers transport people in vans that are loaded beyond the recommended vehicle weight limitations. The unrestrained occupants change the vehicle's center of gravity and increase the propensity for van rollovers. Van rollovers produce multiple casualties that quickly outstrip the resources

Northwest African and Middle Eastern food and dietary change of indigenous peoples.

This paper describes cultural and ecological characteristics of Northwest African and Middle Eastern food patterns and discusses the forces contributing to rapid dietary change. Focus is given to indigenous/tribal/ethnic/minorities in these areas with contributions to definitions of these groups, the extent of their diversity, and the importance of their traditional knowledge of local food resources. Urbanization, particularly for those facing extreme poverty in the urban environment, is recognized as a significant force to dietary change and consequent poor nutrition, especially for children.

Examining the Influence of Food Insecurity on Perinatal Health Outcomes Among Black Birthing Individuals in the U.S.: A Systematic Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity disproportionately affects Black households in the United States (US) and is linked to adverse perinatal health outcomes. Addressing food insecurity is crucial for improving maternal and infant health outcomes, especially among Black mothers. This scoping review explores the impact of food insecurity and low food access (i.e., food deserts) on various maternal health outcomes during the perinatal period among Black women. METHODS: Using the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for scoping reviews, literature searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Scien

[Ecology of flea groups of the species conformis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae: Xenopsylla) of the fauna of Russia and adjacent countries (review)].

Within the boundaries of the former USSR, the northern part of the conformis group distribution is located. It spreads over the arid regions of the Trans-Cacucasus, Pricaspijckaja lowland, Kazakhstan and Middle Asia. In this area 10 species and subspecies occur. They are mainly parasites of gerbillins. Unlike many other Siphonaptera the conformis fleas, when in the host's home, do not concentrate in the nest but inhabit the passages of burrow and food chambers throughout the year. On this reason the preimaginal development and existence of the adults take place not at the temperature of the ha

Disparities in neighborhood food environments: implications of measurement strategies.

Public health researchers have begun to map the neighborhood “food environment” and examine its association with the risk of overweight and obesity. Some argue that “food deserts”—areas with little or no provision of fresh produce and other healthy food—may contribute to disparities in obesity, diabetes, and related health problems. While research on neighborhood food environments has taken advantage of more technically sophisticated ways to assess distance and density, in general, it has not considered how individual or neighborhood conditions might modify physical distance and thereby affect

Fast food restaurants and food stores: longitudinal associations with diet in young to middle-aged adults: the CARDIA study.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of cross-sectional, small-sample research has led to policy strategies to reduce food deserts--neighborhoods with little or no access to healthy foods--by limiting fast food restaurants and small food stores and increasing access to supermarkets in low-income neighborhoods. METHODS: We used 15 years of longitudinal data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, a cohort of US young adults (aged 18-30 years at baseline) (n = 5115), with linked time-varying geographic information system-derived food resource measures. Macroscopic and Microscopic Organization of the Intestine in the Arabian Jerboa (Jaculus loftusi): Adaptive Significance for Desert Survival.

The Arabian jerboa (Jaculus loftusi) able to thrive in one of the harshest conditions on the earth, where water is scarce and food is often dry and fibrous. To understand how this small desert rodent manages such challenges, we examined the structural and functional modifications of the hindgut in eight adult male individuals collected from Aljouf desert in northern Saudi Arabia. The digestive tract was about 62.7 cm long, nearly five times the jerboa's body length with the small intestine making up the greatest share (55.9%). The large intestine was characterized by a sacculated cecum serving

Invasions and Local Outbreaks of Four Species of Plague Locusts in South Africa: A Historical Review of Outbreak Dynamics and Patterns.

The current paper provides a detailed review of the historical outbreaks of each of the four plague locust species found in South Africa, namely the brown locust, the African migratory locust, the red locust, and the southern African desert locust. The history and dynamics of the plague infestations and the major local outbreaks are summarized. The typical patterns of the outbreaks of the different species are described, and the threat of these locusts to agriculture in South Africa is defined. The brown locust produces regular outbreaks in the semi-arid Karoo, with large-scale eruptions of pl

The urinary bladder as a physiological reservoir that moderates dehydration in a large desert lizard, the Gila monster Heloderma suspectum.

Animals inhabiting xeric environments use a variety of behavioral and physiological strategies to balance water budgets. We studied the potential contribution of the urinary bladder to osmoregulation in a large desert lizard, the Gila monster Heloderma suspectum. Here we present results of a series of in vivo laboratory experiments which tested the hypothesis that the Gila monster urinary bladder serves as a physiological reservoir, as in amphibians and chelonians, providing water that buffers increases in plasma osmolality when food and water are unavailable. Adult Gila monsters absorbed wate

Green-blue water system innovations for upgrading of smallholder farming systems--a policy framework for development.

Rainfed agriculture and other depletion of water by green flows have as yet an untapped potential for improving livelihoods in semi-arid areas through income and food security. A vivid evidence of this is seen in the fact that, although working full time on food production, majority of smallholder farmers are frequently affected by shortage of food or famines. At the same time enough examples exist to show that productivity of labor, water and land under rainfed farming can be doubled or even trebled through proper land management and improved agronomic inputs supported by modest investments t

Food insecurity screening and local food access: Contributions to nutritional outcomes among children and adults with cystic fibrosis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: As the nutritional status of people with CF (PwCF) is associated with their socioeconomic status, it is important to understand factors related to food security and food access that play a role in the nutritional outcomes of this population. We assessed the contributions of CF program-level food insecurity screening practices and area-level food access for nutritional outcomes among PwCF. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 2019 data from the U.S. CF Patient Registry (CFFPR), linked to survey data on CF program-level food insecurity screening and 2019 patient zip c

Regulation of feeding by Neuropeptide F in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria.

Our knowledge on the physiological function of the insect Neuropeptide F (NPF) mostly comes from studies in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, where NPF was shown to regulate diverse processes, such as feeding, learning and responding to stress. In the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, only a truncated form of the "full-length" NPF (the biologically active "trNPF") has been isolated. In this study, we investigated whether this peptide is involved in the regulation of feeding in this orthopteran species. In the S. gregaria EST-database, an NPF-precursor encoding transcript was found. A
