The lived experience of Co-occurring food insecurity and food addiction: A qualitative study.

Household food insecurity affects 13.5% of US households and is associated with short and long-term negative health outcomes. Food addiction, which posits that highly processed (HP) foods may trigger addictive responses akin to substance use disorders (SUD), occurs in approximately 15% of adults. Food addiction is measured using the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0, which is based on the SUD criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Although recent research suggests food insecurity and food addiction are associated among low-income adults, the

Three-dimensional food printing: its readiness for a food and nutrition insecure world.

Three-dimensional (3D) food printing is a rapidly emerging technology offering unprecedented potential for customised food design and personalised nutrition. Here, we evaluate the technological advances in extrusion-based 3D food printing and its possibilities to promote healthy and sustainable eating. We consider the challenges in implementing the technology in real-world applications. We propose viable applications for 3D food printing in health care, health promotion and food waste upcycling. Finally, we outline future work on 3D food printing in food safety, acceptability and economics, et

Should Canadian health promoters support a food stamp-style program to address food insecurity?

Food insecurity is an urgent public health problem in Canada, affecting 4 million Canadians in 2012, including 1.15 million children, and associated with significant health concerns. With little political will to address this significant policy issue, it has been suggested that perhaps it is time for Canada to try a food stamp-style program. Such a program could reduce rates of food insecurity and improve the nutritional health of low-income Canadians. In this article, we explore the history of the US food stamp program; the key impetus of which was to support farmers and agricultural interest

SNAP Participation and Cancer Screening for Adults With Food Insecurity.

IMPORTANCE: Food insecurity affects nearly 1 in 5 US adults and is associated with barriers to preventive health care. Whether food insecurity is associated with lower national cancer screening adherence and whether Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation is associated with attenuation of these disparities remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between food insecurity and guideline-concordant colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer screening and to assess whether SNAP participation was associated with attenuation of screening disparities among food-inse

Food insecurity and mortality in older adults: a prospective reconstruction.

Food insecurity is increasingly recognised as a public health concern among older adults, yet the mechanisms linking it to mortality remain unclear. Gianfredi and colleagues recently examined this association using data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), reporting that food insecurity was associated with a 41% higher risk of all‑cause mortality and a 126% higher risk of premature mortality (before age 75). While the study addresses an important question using a large, nationally representative cohort, four methodological considerations warrant careful attention before these

Prevalence of unreported and uncontrolled dyslipidemia in a food insecure population.

Dyslipidemia is a major contributor to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, yet it remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in food insecure populations. This study describes the prevalence of unreported and uncontrolled dyslipidemia in food insecure populations in Chicago, Illinois. The study population comprised individuals attending food pantry health screenings in West Chicago from August 2023-October 2025. Demographic information, lipid panel results, and vital measurements obtained during screening were analyzed. Participants were stratified by self-reported history of dyslipidemia. Of

Measuring and testing vulnerability to food insecurity for prediction and targeting.

Taking advantage of the exogenous nature of the COVID-19 shock, we present an empirical test to assess the validity of theory-based methods for targeting household vulnerability to food insecurity. Specifically, we test the performance of an applied measure of vulnerability to food insecurity using the World Bank's multi-topic longitudinal survey data for Nigeria collected between 2010 and 2020, covering the period before and after the pandemic. The results show that this vulnerability measure severely underperforms in predicting food-insecure households out of sample relative to a simple, dat

Capturing food insecurity data and implications for business and policy.

Food insecurity (also known as food poverty) is the inability to afford or access a healthy diet. It has become recognised as a public health emergency and is a priority in the context of the environmental, geopolitical and socio-economic implications on businesses, households and civic society. This review paper aims to discuss the merits of collecting food insecurity data and its importance in informing cross-sectoral government and others' understanding, policymaking and action on hunger. The review paper's key findings are that concerted action on measuring and mapping food insecurity with

Food Insecurity and Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Individual food insecurity, defined as having limited or uncertain access to food of sufficient quality and quantity, is associated with increased sexual risk behavior and diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection (STI), even after accounting for measures of socioeconomic status. Little is known about how food stress at the community level may exacerbate sexual and social vulnerabilities, or its potential association to a higher rate of STIs at the county level. METHODS: We conducted an ecological analysis of the association between county-level reported rates of chlamydia, go

Food Insecurity Among Older Adults with a History of Incarceration.

We examined the association between history of incarceration (HOI) and food insecurity (FI) among older adults using pooled data from 12,702 respondents aged 51+ who participated in the 2012 and 2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study. In our sample, 12.8% of participants reported FI. Those with a HOI had an increased odds of FI (OR 1.83; 95% CI 1.52-2.21). Race/ethnicity moderated the association between HOI and FI. The positive and statistically significant association was concentrated among Non-Hispanic Black and Non-Hispanic White participants. No statistically significant associatio

Cardiovascular Health, Adiposity, and Food Insecurity in an Underserved Population.

This study investigated associations between cardiovascular health (CVH), adiposity, and food insecurity by race, sex, and health literacy in a sample of 800 underserved patients with obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 30 kg/m2). CVH was assessed using American Heart Association Life's Simple 7 (LS7) and adiposity was estimated using BMI and waist circumference (WC). Mixed models including interaction terms between food insecurity and sex, race, and health literacy were analyzed for LS7, BMI, and WC. Stratified models were analyzed as indicated by significant interactions. Mean BMI and WC were 3

Food insecurity as a driver of obesity in humans: The insurance hypothesis.

Integrative explanations of why obesity is more prevalent in some sectors of the human population than others are lacking. Here, we outline and evaluate one candidate explanation, the insurance hypothesis (IH). The IH is rooted in adaptive evolutionary thinking: The function of storing fat is to provide a buffer against shortfall in the food supply. Thus, individuals should store more fat when they receive cues that access to food is uncertain. Applied to humans, this implies that an important proximate driver of obesity should be food insecurity rather than food abundance per se. We integrate

The negative effects of poverty & food insecurity on child development.

This paper addresses the importance of the first three years of life to the developing child, examines the importance of early childhood nutrition and the detrimental effects on child health and development due to poverty and food insecurity. As development experts learn more about the importance of the first three years of life, there is growing recognition that investments in early education, maternal-child attachment and nurturance, and more creative nutrition initiatives are critical to help break the cycle of poverty. Even the slightest forms of food insecurity can affect a young child's

The effect of food insecurity on psychosocial aspects of academic achievement.

INTRODUCTION: Studies showed that food insecurity is associated with lower grade point average (GPA) in university students. However academic achievement should be investigated in psychosocial and multidimensional way. Therefore this study aimed to examine the stress mediated relationship between food insecurity and academic achievement, which is addressed from different perspectives. METHODS: The study was conducted on 1,122 university students [seven cases were excluded as data-entry errors: four with implausible age values (2, 2, 167, 211 years) and three with implausible height values (16

Prevalence and underdiagnosis of diabetes mellitus in a food insecure population.

Food insecurity is a public health issue and a major risk factor for overall worse health outcomes including hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, chronic kidney disease and obesity. Food-insecure patients are more likely to have both diagnosed and undiagnosed prediabetes and diabetes. This study examines the prevalence and self-awareness of diabetes and prediabetes in an at-risk, food-insecure population. The Cardiometabolic Health Initiative (CHI) is a community service organization that provides comprehensive cardiometabolic screenings at food pan

Food Insecurity and Eating Disorders: a Review of Emerging Evidence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes emerging evidence for the relationship between food insecurity and eating disorder (ED) pathology, outlines priorities for future research in this area, and comments on considerations for clinical and public health practice. RECENT FINDINGS: Among adults, food insecurity is cross-sectionally associated with higher levels of overall ED pathology, binge eating, compensatory behaviors, binge-eating disorder, and bulimia nervosa. Evidence for similar relationships among adolescents has been less robust; however, compared to studies of adults, there have b
