UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of food intolerance (FI) in Dutch 5- and 6-year-old children and its association with chronic ailments with a survey among parents by questionnaire. Based on parents' perception the prevalence of "probable" FI was 3.8%. FI was associated with asthma, wheezing, eczema, hay fever, chronic rhinitis, hives, chronic diarrhoea and hyperactive behaviour. The Dutch research results are commensurate with the findings of a study carried out in the U.K. Parents frequently associate FI with eczema, hives, chronic diarrhoea and hyperactivity. Th

Single and/or combined food intolerance/malabsorption may cause nonspecific, functional gastrointestinal (GI) complaints. In lactose-intolerant patients we evaluated the influence of additional food intolerance/malabsorption with hydrogen (H2) breath tests. In a retrospective analysis of charts from 279 lactose-intolerant patients, we found 128 patients with only lactose intolerance (LIT). Then, we identified 106 LIT patients with additional histamine intolerance (HIT). Additionally, 45 LIT and HIT patients also had fructose malabsorption (FM). A hydrogen (H2) breath test was performed to eval

Digestive intolerance to food proteins may occur in childhood as a result of a wide range of etiologic and pathophysiologic mechanisms. Cow milk protein intolerance is the most common form of food intolerance in children. Food allergy and food intolerance may be confused because both produce similar symptoms, especially in young children with clinical manifestations of food allergy localized to the gastrointestinal tract. On the other hand, food-sensitive enteropathy may be defined as the clinical food-related syndromes associated with an abnormal small intestinal mucosa. Although several food

Apart from allergic conditions, carbohydrate malassimiliations (sugar metabolism disorders) are classified within the group of food intolerances. These dose-dependent, yet non-immunological reactions require gastroenterological or internal diagnosis following nutritional therapy. Intolerances to carbohydrates such as lactose (milk sugar) and fructose (fruit sugar) in addition to sugar alcohols (sorbitol, mannitol, lactitol etc.) have been gaining increasing attention in recent decades as they are the cause of a wide range of gastrointestinal symptoms. There are currently various options for bo

Dietary treatment with Humana SL (33) or Prosobee (42) was administered to 75 children at the age from 1 month to 3 years with cow's milk allergy (36), coeliac disease (9), secondary enteropathy (30). The treatment time ranged from a few days (in case of intolerance symptoms) to 12 months. In 13 children intolerance symptoms or unwillingness to take food was observed: in 4 (12%) after the application of Humana SL and in 9 (21%) after Prosobee. Lack of improvement after Prosobee treatment was observed in 4 (10%) children, and in 4 (12%) children with Humana SL. The partial or total relief of sy

The relationship between primary lactase deficiency, the amount of lactose in the diet, and symptoms of intolerance continues to be debated. Primary adult lactase deficiency is common with a worldwide occurrence of near 70%. Lactase-deficient individuals malabsorb lactose but may or may not show intolerance symptoms. The development of symptoms appears to depend on the dose of lactose ingested, whether it is accompanied by a meal or other food, rate of gastric emptying, and small intestine transit time. Lactose loads of 15 g or greater produce symptoms in the majority of lactase-deficient pers

Sugars including lactose and fructose, or proteins (gluten), or biogenic amines (histamine), and combinations thereof may cause food intolerance/malabsorption. However, in usually asymptomatic patients with rare diseases, who present with functional, non-specific, non-allergic gastrointestinal (GI) complaints the etiologic factors of food intolerance/malabsorption need to be evaluated. We summarize patients with rare diseases, such as primary epiploic appendagitis, beta-thalassemias minor, Gullo syndrome and anomaly of the inferior vena cava, who presented functional, non-specific, non-allergi

Immunologically mediated hypersensitivity to foods is defined as food allergy, mainly due to immunglobulins of class E (IgE) triggering immediate reactions (type I hypersensitivity) with possible involvement of mucosa, skin, airways, intestinal tract, and the vascular system. Primary food allergy is based on (early) IgE sensitization against animal (e. g., cow's milk, hen's eggs) or plant proteins (e. g. peanut, hazelnut or wheat). In the case of secondary food allergies, IgE against pollen proteins (e. g., birch) reacts to structurally related food proteins (with cross-reactions to stone and

BACKGROUND: Health care professionals and patients mix and mingle (hyper)sensitivity, allergy and intolerance. The consequences are discrepancies which result in confusion. The following is a very personal point of view, intended to start a debate to come to consensus.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to clarify the proposed terminology for the primary health care professional from the point of view of the pediatric gastroenterologist.
RESULTS: Many patients present with symptoms "related to food ingestion". We propose to use this wording if no underlying mechanism can be identified. Intolerance should

We have evaluated the association between gallstones and abdominal symptoms, comparing two different study designs. We asked questions on abdominal pain, dyspeptic symptoms, and food intolerance in (1) surgery patients referred for conditions unrelated to gallstones, screened by ultrasound (screening study, n = 892, 63 with gallstones); and in (2) symptomatic patients referred for gallbladder ultrasound (clinical study, n = 336, 71 with gallstones). Gallstones were associated with mid upper abdominal pain in the screening study, and with mid upper abdominal pain, biliary pain, and colic (each

BACKGROUND AND PILOT STUDY: Celiac disease (CD) or gluten malabsorption is a well-defined autoimmune disorder characterized by mucosal gastrointestinal reaction to ingested gluten proteins. The necessary treatment for CD is a gluten-free diet. However, up to 30% of celiac patients experience persistent or recurring abdominal complaints despite following an exact gluten-free diet. This condition was named refractory, non-responsive celiac disease. Other food ingredients, such as carbohydrates and biogenic amines, also influence and impair digestion, and may cause these abdominal symptoms. In th

INTRODUCTION: The basic method of treating food hypersensitivity is the elimination diet, which is difficult for the patient in many ways.
AIM: To identify the main problems faced by patients with symptoms of food intolerance.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The survey was conducted from February 2021 to December 2021. The survey was posted in Polish thematic groups on Facebook, dedicated to people with food intolerances. The survey contained 34 questions about food intolerances and the use of elimination diets. Questions about the cost of the diet and difficulties in applying the elimination diet wer

The aim of this review was to present various topics related to lactose intolerance with special attention given to the role of fermented foods and probiotics in alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms. Lactose intolerance is a common digestive problem in which the human body is unable to digest lactose, known as milk sugar. Lactose intolerance can either be hereditary or a consequence of intestinal diseases. Recent work has demonstrated that fermented dairy products and probiotics can modify the metabolic activities of colonic microbiota and may alleviate the symptoms of lactose intolerance. We

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder resulting from gluten intolerance and is based on a genetically predisposition. Symptoms occur upon exposure to prolamin from wheat, rye, barley and related grain. The pathogenesis of celiac disease has not yet been sufficiently elucidated but is being considered as an autoimmune process. At its core are the deamidation of prolamin fragments, the building of specific antibodies and the activation of cytotoxic T-cells. The immunological inflammatory process is accompanied by structural damages of the enterocytes (villous atrophy, colonization and crypt h

Irritable bowel syndrome patients frequently believe that food intolerances are to blame for many of their symptoms, although not uncommonly this is caused by the nonspecific increase in gut motility that occurs with food ingestion. Nevertheless, dietary manipulation may result in substantial improvement in IBS symptomatology provided it is individualized to the particular patient. By further understanding the mechanisms involved in dietary intolerance, it should be possible to optimize the benefits of this approach to treatment.

Epidemiological surveys demonstrate that rapid increase in allergic diseases is a real phenomenon. In developed countries they are about the commonest chronic diseases, reaching between 15% and 30% of the population. Adverse reaction to food can be divided into toxic reaction and non-toxic reactions. The non-toxic reactions are divided into non-immune mediated and immune mediated, these are considered food allergic reactions. We showed our experience in a 4 y survey, individualized by food allergens during the first two years of life. In Spain egg white protein is the most common allergen foll

Adverse reactions (sensitivity) to foods are categorized as either allergic (immunologic) or intolerance (nonimmunologic). Some medical conditions caused by intolerance reactions have immunologic features, but these have not adequately explained the basis of these conditions. Idiosyncratic, toxic, and anaphylactoid reactions may resemble allergic reactions clinically even though they are not based on specific immunologic events. Complaints about adverse reactions to foods are common but most cannot be reproduced by challenge studies. This fact reflects the transient nature of many of these rea
