Foodborne and Waterborne Disease in Canada - 1978 Annual Summary.

Data on foodborne disease in Canada in 1978 are compared with data for 1977. A total of 836 incidents, comprising 642 outbreaks and 194 single cases, causing illness in 5960 persons was reported for 1978. The number of incidents and cases increased by 7.5% and 23.9%, respectively, from 1977 to 1978. Like the previous year, Salmonella spp. were responsible for more incidents (67) and cases (2171) than any other agent. Other incidents were caused by Staphylococcus aureus (31), suspect mold and yeast (17), Bacillus cereus (9), Clostridium perfringens (7), Clostridium botulinum (6), and Shigelli s

Foodborne disease burden in Sweden with a One Health perspective.

Foodborne diseases (FBDs) pose a substantial public health burden worldwide, yet their extent and drivers in Sweden have not been comprehensively assessed. Using a One Health framework, we estimated the national FBD burden from 2013 to 2022 and explored links to zoonotic sources and climate factors. We identified over 1.2 million cases, most unreported, corresponding to 37,665 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Campylobacteriosis accounted for the largest share of cases and disease burden, with strong correlations to poultry farm outbreaks and contaminated chicken meat, while salmonellosi…

Yersiniosis - a zoonotic foodborne disease of relevance to public health.

INTRODUCTION: Y. enterocolitica is the causative agent of yersiniosis - a foodborne zoonosis with substantial importance to public health. Y. enterocolitica is widespread in the environment and animal populations, posing a potential source of infection to humans. OBJECTIVE: Presentation of yersiniosis as a zoonotic foodborne disease of relevance to public health. State of knowledge. Swine play an important role as a reservoir of Y. enterocolitica and insufficiently thermally processed pork is the main source of infection to humans. The correlation between strains isolated from pigs and from c

Foodborne disease surveillance in England and Wales: 1989-1991.

This review summarises reports of food poisoning, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis and other acute foodborne illness to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, and notifications of food poisoning collated by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, in the period 1989-1991. During this period there were continuing rises in notifications of food poisoning and reports of salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis. There was considerable success in the control of foodborne listeriosis. Newly emerging pathogens, such as Vero cytotoxin producing Escherichia coli, became more important. T

A foodborne outbreak of group A streptococcal disease at a birthday party.

A severe foodborne outbreak of group A streptococcal disease (T28) affected 122/169 people (72%) who attended a church party or ate leftovers from the party. The median incubation time was 42 h. Muscular pain or weakness and fatigue usually preceded pharyngeal symptoms. Complications included otitis media with perforation, peritonsillitis requiring tonsillectomy, arthritis and pericarditis. A 45-year-old man died 36 h after he developed an influenza-like illness, and at necropsy there were histological signs of early streptococcal septicaemia. The strain produced erythrogenic exotoxins B and C

Preliminary Estimates of Costs of Foodborne Disease in the United States.

Although the full economic impact of foodborne diseases has yet to be measured, preliminary studies show that the cost of illness, death, and business lost is high indeed. This impact is probably greatest in developing countries, but few facts are known. For the United States, preliminary estimates are 12.6 million cases costing $8.4 billion. These may seem excessive but other authors have postulated even higher case and dollar figures. Microbiological diseases (bacterial and viral) represent 84% of the United States' costs, with salmonellosis and staphylococcal intoxication being the most eco…

Expert knowledge elicitation to determine the relative importance of potentially foodborne parasitic diseases in Armenia.

Reliable prioritization of foodborne parasitic diseases is challenging in settings where routine surveillance and attribution data are limited. For example, In Armenia, the relative importance of different foodborne parasitoses has not previously been assessed. This study applied expert knowledge elicitation (EKE) to identify and rank foodborne parasitic diseases of public health relevance and to support national prioritization efforts. A structured questionnaire was administered to experts from human health, veterinary medicine, food safety, and biological sciences. Participants evaluated sel

Association between food control inspection grades and regional incidence of infectious foodborne diseases in Finland.

We studied regional food control inspection grades and their relation to regional incidence of domestically acquired foodborne diseases (caused by Campylobacter spp. Salmonella spp. enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), and Listeria monocytogenes) using food control inspection data of local food business operators and infectious disease data from 2014 to 2019 from Finland. We observed that inferior overall inspection grades were associated with increased incidence of Salmonella infections (p=0.02). Specifically, inferior grades on cleanliness of facilities, surfaces, and equipment were as…

Detecting Foodborne Disease Outbreaks in Florida through Consumer Complaints.

ABSTRACT: The Florida Complaint and Outbreak Reporting System (FL-CORS) database is used by the Florida Department of Health's Food and Waterborne Disease Program as one of the tools to detect foodborne disease outbreaks (FBOs). We present a descriptive and spatial network analysis of FL-CORS data collected during 2015 to 2018. We also quantified FBOs that were investigated and confirmed because of a filed complaint and the etiological agents involved in these outbreaks. An increasing number of unique complaints filed in FL-CORS was observed during 2015 to 2018, with a sharp increase during 20

Disease burden from foodborne illnesses in Taiwan, 2012-2015.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Foodborne disease is a global health problem. We aim to provide the first national estimate on disease burden from foodborne illnesses in Taiwan. METHODS: We adopted the World Health Organization (WHO) Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG) methodology framework, and used a hazard-based incidence approach to calculate disability-adjusted life year (DALY) lost to foodborne diseases. Estimated annual incidences and associated medical costs are based on the National Health Insurance research database. We redistributed incidence of unspecified acute gastr…

Estimating the burden of foodborne disease, South Korea, 2008-2012.

Estimating the actual occurrence of foodborne illness is challenging because only a small proportion of foodborne illnesses are confirmed and reported. Many studies have attempted to accurately estimate the overall number of cases of foodborne illness, but none have attempted to estimate the burden of foodborne disease in South Korea. This study used data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA), a public health surveillance system in South Korea, to calculate the number of cases and hospitalizations due to 18 specific pathogens and unspecified agents commonly transmitted
