The story of a deformed leprous foot.

Eccrine syringofibroadenoma (ESFA) is a rare adnexal tumour of eccrine ductal proliferation. A 50 year old treated case of leprosy presented with a chronic non healing ulcer of 5 years duration on the deformity laden right foot. Multiple verrucous papules and plaques were seen surrounding the ulcer which showed histopathological findings consistent with ESFA. Although ESFA constitutes a rare association with leprosy, considering the load of treated cases in our country and elsewhere, it may represent an under-reported entity which requires more attention in the post elimination era.

Congenital cleft foot deformity.

Cleft foot or ectrodactyly is a rare congenital anomaly. It is often associated with cleft hands. Most early authors advised non-operative treatment but more recently surgical treatment has been advised. However the last two decades have seen a trend towards surgical management of these deformities. Most authors agree that whilst cosmesis is an important consideration, the main aim of correction is to provide feet which could fit into normal shoes and to provide or maintain a normal functional foot. We describe our experience with five feet in three patients treated surgically as a one step pr

Unilateral cleft foot deformity.

A 17-year-old girl with unilateral atypical cleft foot deformity is reported. In this case the deformity was associated with deafness, mandibular retrognathia and congenital bilateral temporomandibular joint luxation. Family history of cleft foot deformity was not found. A syndactylization procedure with shortening of the big toe was done. The temporomandibular joint luxation was also corrected.

Foot deformity in myotonic dystrophy.

Myotonic dystrophy is a progressive multisystem disorder that may be inherited from either parent, although only children with affected mothers usually show the more severe congenital form of the condition; others are classified as having adult myotonic dystrophy. Since 1940, 29 patients with myotonic dystrophy (10 adult, 17 congenital, two unclassified) have been followed at the Alfred I. duPont Institute. Treatment protocols have been established for the treatment of talipes equinovarus deformity commonly seen in the congenital form of myotonic dystrophy, as well as the progressive dropfoot

[The rheumatoid foot. Origin of deformations].

Deformations of the foot are a logical and predictable function of the biomechanics of the foot and the constraints undergone by the articulations of the foot, that are unstabilized by the inflammatory process. They result from the combination of three factors : anevolutive teno-articular synovitis, predictible forces (the weight of the extrinsic muscle, the anti-physiological foot), and the congenital morphotype of the foot. Typical deformations (peroneal " coup de vent " of the toes, triangular metatarsus), differ on the clinical level in keeping with the morphotype but respond to the same m

The anatomy of cavus foot deformity.

The term "cavus foot" is used to describe a spectrum of foot shapes that have in common a high arch. The components of cavus are increased pitch and varus of the hindfoot, plantar flexion of the midfoot, and varus and adduction of the forefoot. The cavus shape is associated with changes in the mechanics of the foot. It is less flexible and balanced than a neutral foot. Although one fifth to one quarter of the population has a cavus foot, there is little anatomic description in the literature. This manuscript describes the anatomy and function of cavus foot.

Prenatal assessment of foot deformity.

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) and other skeletal abnormalities can be diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound scan. If diagnosed, clinicians should be cautiously optimistic with the parents, particularly if the talipes diagnosed is isolated and not associated with other foetal abnormalities. There is no correlation between the prenatal appearance of the foot and the state of the foot at birth, nor with the necessity for surgical intervention.

[Posttraumatic deformity correction at the foot].

Posttraumatic foot deformities requiring correction result from overlooked or inadequately treated injuries and, on the other hand, from protracted courses because of avascular necrosis, non-union or infection after primary surgery. To achieve a maximum benefit, corrective surgery has to be carried out early before arthritic involvement of adjacent joint becomes evident. As salvage procedures, arthrodeses should be restricted to the affected joints. Especially talus malunion and non-union should be corrected with preservation of the joints whenever possible to achieve favourable functional out

Cavus foot deformity in children.

A cavus deformity of the foot is easily recognizable, but appropriate neurologic assessment can help to determine the etiology. Cavovarus, the most frequent type of cavus foot, presents with an elevated medial longitudinal arch, first ray plantarflexion, and, if rigid, a fixed heel varus. Common causes include progressive motor sensory conditions, typically Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and nonprogressive conditions such as cerebral palsy and poliomyelitis. A calcaneocavus foot may be seen in poliomyelitis, spinal dysraphism, and peripheral neuropathy. Initially, the cavus deformity is flexible

Repeatability of the Oxford Foot Model in children with foot deformity.

INTRODUCTION: The Oxford Foot Model (OFM) is a multi-segment, kinematic model developed to assess foot motion. It has previously been assessed for repeatability in healthy populations. To determine the OFM's reliability for detecting foot deformity, it is important to know repeatability in pathological conditions. The aim of the study was to assess the repeatability of the OFM in children with foot deformity. METHODS: Intra-tester repeatability was assessed for 45 children (15 typically developing, 15 hemiplegic, 15 clubfoot). Inter-tester repeatability was assessed in the clubfoot population

The spectrum of foot deformities in Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is characterized by a wide spectrum of musculoskeletal manifestations, including foot deformities. The spectrum of foot deformities in LDS has not been previously characterized. Our objective was to describe the incidence and characteristics of foot deformities in LDS. We retrospectively reviewed the demographic, clinical and imaging data for patients diagnosed with LDS who were seen at our Orthopedic surgery department from 2008 to 2021. We performed descriptive analyses and compared distributions of deformities by LDS genetic mutations. Of the 120 patients studied,

Clubfoot Versus Positional Foot Deformities on Prenatal Ultrasound Imaging.

Clubfoot and positional foot deformities (eg, pes spinatus) may have the same aspects on prenatal ultrasound (US) imaging. Nevertheless, differentiating these entities is essential because their prognoses are different. This pictorial review illustrates the US findings of clubfoot and positional foot deformities. On the basis of clinical postnatal images, we describe a prenatal US technique that could give an accurate diagnosis. In this essay, we demonstrate that when a foot malposition is suspected, a systematic analysis with 3 rigorous planes could help differentiate positional foot deformit

PREVALENCE OF FOOT DEFORMITIES IN YOUNG SCHOOLCHILDREN IN SLAVONIA.

The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of foot deformity in urban children, as well as possible generational and gender differences using graphic and angular methods. The sample of study subjects included 426 1st to 4th grade schoolchildren (7 to 10 years of age). Out of the total number of schoolchildren, 181 children (88 boys and 93 girls) were measured in 2005, and 244 children (122 boys and 123 girls) in 2011. The results indicated that the largest number of children had no noticeable foot deformity, flat foot in particular. Likewise, there were no gender differences in the

Foot and ankle deformities in children with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Foot and ankle deformities are common orthopaedic disorders in children with Down syndrome. However, radiographic measurements of the foot and ankle have not been previously reported. The aim of this study is to describe the foot and ankle deformity in children with Down syndrome. METHODS: Children who had foot and ankle radiographs in the standing weight-bearing position were selected. Three groups of patients were identified. The relationship of radiographic measurements with age, body mass index and pain is discussed. In all, 41 children (79 feet) had foot radiographs and 60 child
