[The application of photogrammetry and three-dimensional (3D) printing in forensic medicine].

Technological progress has enabled new three-dimensional (3D) technologies, creating new opportunities in forensic medicine and other areas of medicine. The use of 3D technologies in forensic work is not only directly beneficial to the forensic expert but can also greatly help legal practitioners understand the expert opinion. Photogrammetry is a process for creating a digital 3D model from photographs. The method does not require special equipment or training. The digital model, created with its help, documents injuries accurately, supports the full 3D reconstruction of crimes, supports foren

Geriatric Forensic Medicine - A Specialty that can no Longer Wait to be Realised.

The rise in the population and the growth in the proportion of the elderly in our population are changing the structure of many of our communities and placing increasing demands on our social and health care services. "Scandals" regarding conditions and standards of care in residential aged care facilities have raised concerns about the regulation, assessment and auditing of these community services for the elderly. At the same time longer working lives change the age factors related to employment opportunities and the cadre of older employees presents a different range of human resource issue

Contribution by Departments of Forensic Medicine to Tissue Donation for Transplant Purposes.

BACKGROUND: A department of forensic medicine (DFM) can be a valuable source for tissue donation, but logistics can prove difficult to overcome as it pertains to obtaining tissues for donation. This article describes the potential of tissues that can be procured for transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sweden has 9.7 million inhabitants, with an annual mortality rate of 90 000 and 5500 medicolegal autopsies per year. Cooperation between tissue banking and 2 DFMs began in the mid-1980s. Recently, cooperation has expanded to include all six DFMs. All tissue establishments (TEs) were asked to

[Development of forensic thanatology through the prism of analysis of postmortem protocols collected at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Jagiellonian University].

When assessed based on the analysis of postmortem protocols, the successes of forensic thanatology appear to differ from those that might be assumed using as the foundation a review of publications and textbooks. The greatest achievements date back to as early as the 18th and 19th centuries, when the morphological changes observed in the majority of types of deaths resulting from disease-associated and traumatic causes were described. Within the past 130 years, however, or in other words, in the period when autopsy protocols were written that are today collected in the archives of the Krakow D

Violence against the elderly: a retrospective analysis from a forensic medicine perspective.

BACKGROUND: In many contemporary studies, individuals aged 65 years and older are defined as older adults. Owing to population aging, the number of older adults worldwide is steadily increasing. Age-related physical and cognitive decline, together with social changes, may increase vulnerability to violence in this population. This study aimed to present and discuss data on older adults aged 65 years and over who were victims of violence and underwent medicolegal evaluation, to draw attention to measures that may help prevent violence against older adults, and to propose potential strategies fo

Role of autopsy imaging in veterinary forensic medicine: experiences in 39 cases.

While numerous scientific studies have suggested the usefulness of autopsy imaging (Ai) in the field of human forensic medicine, the use of imaging modalities for the purpose of veterinary forensics is currently scant. The current study performed Ai on suspicious dead animals requested by the police department to determine their cause of death. Radiography and/or computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging were performed on 39 suspicious dead animals before necropsy. After diagnostic imaging, pathological examination was performed, with drug testing added as needed. Among the 39 case

The interdisciplinary cooperation of forensic medicine, clinical medicine and palaeozoology: a case of cave bear (Ursus speloeus) bones.

Three pathologically modified bones (cranium, left mandible, iliac bone) of a cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) were found in the Last Glacial deposits (OIS 3) in the caves of the Vel'ká Fatra carst, Slovak republic. Despite of thorough paleontological examination, the bear bones were examined by experts in forensic medicine, traumatology and stomatology, too. The pathological changes were found in the tooth bed on the right side of the maxilla at the place of M1, being interpreted as a result of odontogenic purulent inflammation of soft tissues of tooth bed and surrounding bone. The iliac bone has

A forensic diving medicine examination of a highly publicised scuba diving fatality.

A high-profile diving death occurred in 2003 at the site of the wreck of the SS Yongala off the Queensland coast. The victim's buddy, her husband, was accused of her murder and found guilty of manslaughter in an Australian court. A detailed analysis of all the evidence concerning this fatality suggests alternative medical reasons for her death. The value of decompression computers in determining the diving details and of CT scans in clarifying autopsy findings is demonstrated. The victim was medically, physically and psychologically unfit to undertake the fatal dive. She was inexperienced and

Clinical forensic medicine in the present day trauma-care system--an overview.

Criminal violence and its associated trauma comprise a critical health problem throughout the world. Clinical forensic medicine represents a new discipline of medical practice that is evolving in direct response to the sequelae of criminal and interpersonal violence. The application of the principles and standards of the forensic specialist has been increasingly recognized as playing a crucial role in trauma care; the results of the extremes of human behaviour-abused children, individuals suffering from blatant neglect and maltreatment, or self-inflicted injury, and victims of road-traffic acc

Management of tuberculosis patients and the role of forensic medicine in COVID-19 pandemic.

Tuberculosis and Coronaviral disease-19 had a global impact in 2020 and still predominating, both infectious diseases similar to the lethal pandemics spread in one route, likely airborne transmission, the infected person could spread to healthy people. However, tuberculosis slightly varies from COVID-19. Though the primordial disease of the tuberculosis epidemic has had a vast impact on this society, besides the COVID-19 pandemic with other co-morbidities, conditions faced numerous complications. This review exemplified the impact of two lethal diseases in changing patient care, diagnostic iss

An evaluation of applied biomechanics as an adjunct to systematic specific causation in forensic medicine.

Biomechanical tests of post hoc probability have been proposed by prior authors as reliable tests of causation in forensic settings. Biomechanical assessment of injury kinetics and kinematics is a potentially important tool in forensic medicine, but there is also the potential for misapplication. The most reliable application is when biomechanical analysis is used to explain injury mechanisms, such as how an injury may have occurred. When a biomechanical analysis is used as a means of determining whether, rather than how an injury has resulted from a traumatic exposure, then a lack of reliabil

[Current Status Analysis and Pathway Exploration of the Technology Transfer in Forensic Medicine].

The technology transfer is a vital task for the development of China's scientific and technological innovation system. As a discipline that integrates technological and legal characteristics, forensic medicine has distinct particularities in terms of attribute orientation, achievement forms and application scenarios, making it infeasible to directly adopt the market-oriented transformation models applied in general industrial fields. Based on the disciplinary characteristics, this paper systematically analyzes the characteristics, major problems and structural causes affecting the transfer of

The diatom test in the field of forensic medicine: a review of a long-standing question.

This article evaluates the criteria for diatom testing in forensic investigations, focusing on drowning cases. Diatoms, unicellular algae found in aquatic environments, are critical to the determination of drowning because water containing diatoms is inhaled during submersion. The primary objectives include defining the exact amount and type of tissue to be analyzed, expressed in terms of diatom concentration relative to tissue weight, and detailing the conditions under which water samples are collected to study the diatom flora at the site. In addition, the importance of accurately identifyin

[Plastic bag suffocation in material collected by Department of Forensic Medicine in Krakow].

Cases of death resulting from placing a plastic bag on the victim's head are very rare. In the last 20 years, in the Department of Forensic Medicine in Krakow, there were fourteen such cases examined. Their number is, however, noticeably growing, amounting to as many as few cases per year. Death resulting from this mechanism is difficult from the diagnostic point of view and often the only indicative evidence is a presence of a plastic bag on the head.

Rethinking asphyxia in forensic medicine: From an umbrella term to mechanism-based reporting.

The term asphyxia is deeply embedded in forensic medicine, although its etymological meaning and contemporary use are not equivalent and the conditions grouped under it do not share a single pathophysiological pathway. Hanging, strangulation, choking, drowning, and thoracoabdominal compression may involve different and often overlapping contributions from impaired ventilation, hypoxia, hypercapnia, obstruction of cerebral venous drainage, reduced cerebral arterial inflow, hemodynamic compromise, and possible reflex cardiac effects. Neither these processes nor their relative contributions can a
