The major role of forensic pathology is the investigation of human death in relevance to social risk management to determine the cause and process of death, especially in violent and unexpected sudden deaths, which involve social and medicolegal issues of ultimate, personal and public concerns. In addition to the identification of victims and biological materials, forensic molecular pathology contributes to general explanation of the human death process and assessment of individual death on the basis of biological molecular evidence, visualizing dynamic functional changes involved in the dying

Conventional diatom-based assays for drowning diagnosis present multiple inherent limitations, including prolonged testing durations, poor adaptability to field examination, compromised detecta‑ bility in aquatic environments with low diatom abundance, and reliance on a single type of forensic evidence. To address the above limitations, our team selected drowning-relevant planktonic microorga‑ nisms, including diatoms, cyanobacteria, and planktonic bacteria, as molecular biomarkers and established a rapid planktonic microorganism DNA detection system based on real-time quantitative polymerase

Microbiome-based human identification has emerged as a promising complementary forensic tool. We performed a re-analysis of longitudinal Human Microbiome Project 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing data targeting the V3-V5 hypervariable region to assess intra and interindividual variation across multiple human body subsites. Stool microbiome exhibited the strongest evidence of individual differentiation, while salivary microbiomes demonstrated significantly greater inter-individual than intra-individual variation and high temporal stability. These findings support the potential forensic relevanc

Rape is a forensic emergency due to the possibility of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS. Moreover, an upsurge is currently underway. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of Trichomonas vaginalis in women undergoing tests at the Microbiology Unit of the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona Antananarivo Hospital after being raped. This retrospective descriptive study covers the 7-year period from 2005 to 2011 and reports the results of direct examination of the vaginal discharge after vulvar smears from rape patients. We studied the age of patients and the re

Postmortem cross-sectional imaging using multislice computed tomography (MSCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was considered as a base for a minimal invasive postmortem investigation in forensic medicine such as within the Virtopsy approach. We present the case of a 3-year-old girl with a lethal streptococcus group A infection and the findings of postmortem imaging in this kind of natural death. Postmortem MSCT and MRI revealed an edematous occlusion of the larynx at the level of the vocal cords, severe pneumonia with atelectatic parts of both upper lobes and complete atelectasis of both

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A thorough understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms elicited by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) still requires further research. Until recently, only a restricted number of autopsies have been performed, therefore limiting the accurate knowledge of the lung injury associated with SARS-CoV-2. A multidisciplinary European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) Study Group of Forensic and Post-mortem Microbiology-ESGFOR team conducted a non-systematic narrative literature review among coronavirus 2019 disease (COV

The diagnosis of septic arthritis remains challenging in the clinical setting, often leading to a suspicion for medical liability. Our purpose is to describe an unusual case of a post-mortem diagnosis of P. multocida fatal septic arthritis, in a healthy 67-year-old woman presenting with pain in the right shoulder. Moreover, a literature review of cases of fatal septic arthritis is provided. The multidisciplinary approach consisted of a forensic autopsy and additional post-mortem analyses (microbiology, biochemical analyses, histopathology, and revision of radiological images) carried out durin

The murder of patients entrusted to the care of healthcare professionals presents an exceptionally rare and complex scenario. The motivations of the perpetrators, usually termed "angels of death" by the media, are not uniform and are often intricate, resulting from a unique combination of individual factors. Among the most sinister motivations are the altruistic desire to end the suffering of severely ill patients-concealing narcissistic-omnipotent tendencies or pathological insecurity-or even the pursuit of pure sadistic gratification. Due to the unique and complex nature of this field, deter

We report on the investigation of a Salmonella enteritidis outbreak in hospitals and nursing homes in the district Oberallgaeu, Bavaria, in July 2004. Affected by this outbreak were hospital patients, inhabitants of nursing homes, kitchen coworkers and maintenance personnel. Within this outbreak six deaths were observed. A forensic medical investigation of four deaths revealed two cases of Salmonella enteritis as the primary cause of death, another cause of death was due to other causes and one cause of death remained unclear. The microbiological investigation of stool samples linked all posit

We describe three cases of nontraumatic clostridial myonecrosis seen at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. Nontraumatic clostridial myonecrosis is an uncommon and often fatal condition that requires immediate institution of appropriate medical and surgical therapy. It is most commonly caused by Clostridium perfringens and Clostridium septicum and is associated with gastrointestinal and hematologic malignancies, diabetes mellitus, and peripheral vascular disease. The clinical features include a rapidly evolving acute illness with severe pain, marked tachycardia, and brawny discolorat

A retrospective series of five cases of nontraumatic gross adrenal hemorrhage were identified in 800 consecutive forensic autopsies. All patients were males, of different ethnicities and with ages ranging from 2 to 48 years. All patients had a clinical history and autopsy findings suggestive of sepsis. Pre- or postmortem microbiological cultures were variably positive for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The fifth case was positive for yeast and a coagulase negative staphylococcus; contamination of this cu

Microbial forensic analysis for deliberate, accidental and natural release of pathogens entail serious ramifications on human health. Surface sampling and transport for downstream verification of biological agents is posed with challenges including presence of background microbial consortium, delay in transport from remote location, and vulnerability of biomolecules to compromised cold chain. Glass surface pre-exposed to field conditions was spiked with S. typhi and sampled with swab. Storage of swab in VTM, PBS, alkaline lysis buffer, and under desiccated condition at RT and 10 °C for a perio

Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing Staphylococcus aureus is associated with highly aggressive necrotizing pneumonia characterized by rapid clinical deterioration and high mortality. However, the clinicopathological features of fatal cases, particularly in the forensic setting, remain incompletely defined. We report a fatal case of PVL-positive S. aureus necrotizing pneumonia diagnosed through forensic autopsy and molecular analysis. In addition, a systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus were searched from database inception to 12

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of sudden death all over the world. The aetiology of sudden cardiac death among young adults includes Brugada syndrome and myocarditis. Brugada syndrome is a genetic abnormality of sodium channels in the myocardium with a characteristic electrocardiographic pattern. Myocarditis has several aetiologies including infections. One of the most common cardiotropic viruses is parvovirus B19. This infection presents as a febrile illness in childhood and may result in fatal outcome, more frequently in adults. In this report we present a case of a young man

OBJECTIVE: Accurate estimation of post-mortem submersion interval (PMSI) is a critical challenge in forensic science. The current research has largely focused on the microbial communities in the skin and gut, which are susceptible to environmental contamination, while the potential of internal tissues remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate whether the microbiome of skeletal muscle, a relatively closed ecosystem, undergoes a predictable succession following submersion in water PMSI and to evaluate its potential for building a high-precision PMSI prediction model, which is indepe

Since the beginning of March 2020, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has been the cause of millions of deaths worldwide. The need to better define the pathogenesis of coronavirus disease 19 (Covid-19) as well as to provide the correct statistical records concerning deaths related to this virus, inevitably involves the role of forensic pathology and routine autopsy practice. Currently, some data on macroscopic and microscopic features in autopsies performed in suspected Covid-19 cases are reported in the literature. The persistence of SARS-CoV-2 in cadave

A 4-year-old child with chickenpox infection for 5 days prior to death complained of swelling and pain in his right leg that required medical assistance in the emergency department. Radiologic study was normal, and analgesic and bandage of the leg were prescribed. Some hours later, he presented cyanosis, dizziness, and vomiting and collapsed. A complete forensic autopsy was performed 12 hours after death. External examination of the body showed numerous crusty varicella skin lesions, especially over the trunk, and swelling and reddening of his right leg. The brain was swollen, with cerebellar

The term "overkilling" in forensic medicine is not clearly defined and is used to refer to homicides involving unusually massive injuries, far exceeding those necessary to kill the victim. This is the clinical case of a dog found in February 2023 in a town near Naples, with a rope around its neck and the metacarpal region of its forelimbs. The dog was taken to the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno (IZSM, Portici, Southern Italy), where it underwent a total body radiographic study performed using the "Philosophy HF400" X-ray device (Pan Vet, Kildare Town, Ireland). A Whole Slide Image (WSI) is a high-resolution digital image created by scanning an entire glass slide containing a biological specimen, such as tissue sections or cell samples, at multiple magnifications. These images are digitally viewable, analyzable, and shareable, and are widely used for Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm development. WSIs play an important role in pathology for disease diagnosis and oncology for cancer research, but are also applied in neurology, veterinary medicine, hematology, microbiology, dermatology, pharmacology, toxicology, immunology, and forensic science.
