Diagnosis of Drowning and the Value of the Diatom Test in Veterinary Forensic Pathology.

The detection of diatoms into the organs is considered an important "biological marker" for the diagnosis of drowning in human pathology, but it still has a high possibility for false positive results. The aims of this study were: (1) to evaluate the contribution of pathological examination in drowning cases and (2) to investigate the differences in the number and location of diatoms between animals who died in drowning and non-drowning conditions. For these purposes, 30 dead adult dogs were selected for the study and subdivided into five groups. The group A comprised six cadavers dead for dro

Glucose metabolism in completed suicide: a forensic-pathological pilot study.

AIM: To determine whether antemortem blood levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and glucose predict completed suicide and, by extension, whether markers of glucose metabolism might be associated with a prosuicidal trait or state. METHOD: From consecutively performed autopsies, samples of blood and vitreous humor from 17 suicide victims and 27 non-suicide controls were compared with regard to levels of glucose, lactate, and HbA1c. RESULTS: Mean HbA1c was higher, and mean estimated blood glucose lower, among suicide victims, although tests revealed no significant differences (P=0.171 and P=0.

Medicolegal Death Investigation: Coroner and Forensic Pathology Functions and Processes in Victoria, Australia.

The medicolegal death investigation in Victoria, Australia is a traditional coroner system based on the model in England and Wales in the early 20th Century. In 1985, the first of a series of legislative amendments were made that proved the vanguard of reform of the coroners' jurisdictions in Australia. The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (the Institute) was established by the Coroners Act 1985 (Vic.), now the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 1985 (Vic.), to provide forensic pathology, medical, and related scientific services needed by the justice system. In addition to de

European Council of Legal Medicine (ECLM) accreditation of forensic pathology services in Europe.

Forensic experts play a major role in the legal process as they offer professional expert opinion and evidence within the criminal justice system adjudicating on the innocence or alleged guilt of an accused person. In this respect, medico-legal examination is an essential part of the investigation process, determining in a scientific way the cause(s) and manner of unexpected and/or unnatural death or bringing clinical evidence in case of physical, psychological, or sexual abuse in living people. From a legal perspective, these types of investigation must meet international standards, i.e., it

Forensic Pathology and Legal Issues in COVID-19: Case Report and Literature Review.

Autopsy investigations of deaths following nosocomial coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection have enormous medical and social significance, as autopsies are essential for the correct statistical recording of COVID-19 deaths, presenting new lessons, which is important to policymakers and in the improvement of public health in general.  Our study is based on the presentation of a case of a road traffic accident involving an elderly 73-year-old female with a complication of nosocomial COVID-19 infection and death leading to forensic pathological investigation. This involved autopsy, histop

Hydrogen sulfide poisoning in forensic pathology and toxicology: mechanism and metabolites quantification analysis.

Historically, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) poisoning has extremely high and irreparable mortality. Currently, the identification of H2S poisoning needs to combine with the case scene analysis in forensic medicine. The anatomy of the deceased seldom had obvious features. There are also a few reports about H2S poisoning in detail. As a result, we give a comprehensive analysis of the related knowledge on the forensic aspect of H2S poisoning. Furthermore, we provide the analytical methods of H2S and its metabolite-which may assist in H2S poisoning identification.

Investigation into abandoned neonates admitted to Salt River Forensic Pathology Mortuary, Cape Town.

The high rates of abandoned neonatal remains admitted to Salt River Mortuary (SRM), Cape Town, and the dearth of literature published in South Africa prompted a retrospective assessment of these cases to describe the profile and assess the scope of the post-mortem investigation of abandoned neonates, as well as determine the prosecution rate of abandoned live births. Demographic details, scene information and post-mortem findings were obtained from medico-legal case files concerning non-viable fetuses, stillbirths and concealment of birth cases admitted to SRM between 1 January 2012 and 31 Dec

Wischnewsky spots in starved dogs and cats and their relevance in veterinary forensic pathology.

In 1895, the German pathologist Dr S.M. Wischnewsky described black, plaque-like discolorations of the gastric mucosa in humans whose cause of death was associated with hypothermia. The pathogenesis of these gastric lesions, known as Wischnewsky spots, is thought to be associated with blood redistribution mechanisms as the body attempts to preserve core body temperature in hypothermic conditions. However, the complete pathogenesis is not fully understood. The relationship between Wischnewsky spots and hypothermia in nonhuman species has also been documented, but again, such lesions in veterina

Occupational burnout in forensic pathology practice: Balancing caseload, emotional resilience, and quality of work.

This mixed-methods study investigates occupational burnout among forensic pathologists in Pakistan, incorporating a quantitative survey of 250 participants and qualitative interviews with 20 pathologists. This study investigated burnout using the Maslach burnout inventory (MBI) and qualitative interviews. As part of the quantitative analyses, independent-samples t-tests, ANOVAs, and MANOVA were conducted to examine the effects of gender, age, and professional experience on emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), personal accomplishment (PA), and total burnout. The interviews were th

Forensic wound age estimation (2003-2024): evolving perspectives on tissue viability and molecular pathology.

Determining the precise timing of injuries remains a longstanding and complex challenge in forensic pathology. Within the domain of injury time extrapolation, our research emphasizes the use of immunohistochemical techniques to detect wound viability markers, offering a promising approach to infer the temporal dynamics of tissue injury. Despite growing interest in this area, comprehensive bibliometric analyses remain scarce. This study aims to evaluate the current landscape and emerging trends in forensic injury time extrapolation through a systematic bibliometric approach. Relevant literature

Histopatholological Findings in a Fatal Case of Rinkhals Envenomation: A New Forensic Pathology Finding?

Although cobra envenomation continues to pose a threat to life and therefore constitutes a major cause of death in Africa, India, and Sri Lanka, the forensic pathology reports are not always histologically well documented or illustrated. The reports in the literature, although providing graphic evidence of the macroscopic appearances of the bite and its ensuing tissue necrosis, should the victim survive, often do not illustrate the histopathological findings to a sufficient degree. We present an unusual case of fatal envenomation by a rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus) in which the victim had b

A Practical Diagnostic Approach to Non-Drowning Asphyxia in Animals: Forensic Pathology and Biomarkers.

The term asphyxia refers to a disruption in brain function due to rapid and persistent cerebral hypoxia or anoxia as a consequence of accidental or non-accidental injury. Considering the different mechanisms that may determine asphyxiation, such injuries can be referred to different categories: strangulation (death by hanging, ligature or manual strangulation), suffocation (smothering, choking, confined spaces and vitiated atmosphere), mechanical asphyxia (positional and traumatic asphyxia) and drowning (submersion or immersion in liquid). In both human and veterinary forensic practice, fatal

Assessing violent mechanical asphyxia in forensic pathology: State-of-the-art and unanswered questions.

Mechanical asphyxiation has been a common method used to commit homicide, including femicide, throughout history. A recent report by the United Nations has shed light on the issue of misidentification and concealment of gender-related killings, which makes it difficult to effectively fight against it. Forensic pathologists are frequently asked to examine cases involving suspected asphyxia to determine whether other persons have been involved. Therefore, medicolegal experts must look for signs of occlusion of the oral/nasal orifices, compression of the neck, or specific signs such as the "facie

Forensic pathological and genetic landmarks in sudden cardiac death in the young: An update.

An episode of sudden death in a young individual is a dramatic event for family members but also a challenge for cardiologists, pediatricians, forensic pathologists and researchers. In the young population, most of sudden deaths are of cardiac origin, in particular due to hereditary cardiac disorders. The autopsy protocol includes a proper macroscopic heart examination and a comprehensive histological analysis. The identification of pathognomonic histopathologic findings may help to unravel the cause of death, but microscopic features are often non-specific and highly ambiguous. Negative autop

miRNAs and Substances Abuse: Clinical and Forensic Pathological Implications: A Systematic Review.

Substance addiction is a chronic and relapsing brain disorder characterized by compulsive seeking and continued substance use, despite adverse consequences. The high prevalence and social burden of addiction are indisputable; however, the available intervention is insufficient. The modulation of gene expression and aberrant adaptation of neural networks are attributed to the changes in brain functions under repeated exposure to addictive substances. Considerable studies have demonstrated that miRNAs are strong modulators of post-transcriptional gene expression in substance addiction. The emerg
