Invasive giant hogweeds in Poland: Risk of burns among forestry workers and plant distribution.

The Caucasian giant hogweeds (Heracleum sosnowskyi Manden. and Heracleum mantegazzianum Sommier et Lever) are aggressive invaders that are successfully spreading in different parts of the world. Exposure of human skin to these plants may lead to phototoxicity and even chemical burns manifested by cutaneous, full-thickness, and long-lasting dermatitis, and in extreme cases, massive skin necrosis. Forestry workers are a group with potentially increased risk of exposure to these plants because of the outdoor nature of their work and their active involvement in managing invasive species. Therefore

Lyme disease: prevalence and clinical importance of Borrelia burgdorferi specific IgG in forestry workers.

41 forestry workers, who had a high occupational risk of tick-bites, were screened for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi by ELISA and western blotting techniques, and questioned about possible symptoms of Lyme disease. Antibodies were detected in 10 of the 40 men who had been bitten by ticks. Definite symptoms of Lyme disease, in the form of erythema migrans, were reported by only 2 workers and none had a history of neurological illness.

Leaching behaviour and ecotoxicity evaluation of chars from the pyrolysis of forestry biomass and polymeric materials.

The main objective of this study was to assess the environmental risk of chars derived from the pyrolysis of mixtures of pine, plastics, and scrap tires, by studying their leaching potential and ecotoxicity. Relationships between chemical composition and ecotoxicity were established to identify contaminants responsible for toxicity. Since metallic contaminants were the focus of the present study, an EDTA washing step was applied to the chars to selectively remove metals that can be responsible for the observed toxicity. The results indicated that the introduction of biomass to the pyrolysis fe

[Prevalence of antibodies to Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi in forestry workers from the Lublin region].

Ticks are recently regarded as ones of the most important vectors of emerging diseases. One of these diseases is human granulocytic ehrlichiosis caused by obligatory intracellular microorganism recently named as Anaplasma phagocytophilum. 334 sera from forestry workers and 56 sera from blood donors (as a control group) were collected and examined for antibodies to A. phagocytophilum and B. burgdorferi. The antibodies were found statistically more frequently in sera from foresters compared to sera of the control group, both to A. phagocytophilum (19.8% vs. 5.4%, p < 0.001) and B. burgdorferi (3

Knowledge, habits and attitudes towards TBE and other tick-borne diseases in German forestry trainees.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an occupational hazard for forestry workers. We measured knowledge levels, misbeliefs, and vaccination rates in forestry trainees in order to tailor specific measures aimed at reducing occupational TBE incidence. A paper-based survey was performed at a central training site for forestry workers in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The questionnaire contained items regarding vaccination status against tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), self-reported tick-borne diseases, knowledge of and attitudes towards tick-borne disease, and practices in the context of tick

Borrelia burgdorferi infection is the most frequent tick-transmitted disease worldwide. Our aim was to assess the seroprevalence of B. burgdorferi infection among forestry workers and farmers in Duzce, in the north-west region of Turkey. Blood samples from 349 forestry workers and farmers and 193 healthy blood donors were obtained to determine the presence of antibodies to B. burgdorferi. A two-step testing strategy was used; the sera were initially tested by ELISA and then by Western blot (WB) IgG. Demographic data regarding residence, age, gender, profession, tick bite history, contact with

A deployment-oriented quality-control framework for integrating UAV LiDAR and field inventory in precision forestry.

Reliable integration of UAV-LiDAR and field inventory is essential for operational forest monitoring, but heterogeneous data quality can destabilize plot-level predictions. Conventional quality-control procedures generally focus on filtering individual records or applying fixed pass-fail rules, providing limited support for differentiated decisions at the plot level. We developed a plot-level quality governance framework centred on QC_score. Unlike record-level screening or binary exclusion alone, QC_score combines spatial matching quality, field-LiDAR structural consistency, and data complete

["Peculiar infection" with fever, splenomegaly and acute kidney failure in a 24-year-old forestry student].

When confronted by the combination of initial high fever associated with intense malaise, splenomegaly, elevated levels of transaminases, and acute renal failure, consideration must be given to the differential diagnosis of leptospirosis even in Germany. As a rule, the diagnosis is confirmed by serological testing based on the titer curve. Renal involvement is frequent, but usually has a good prognosis, especially if jaundice has not developed. Treatment with doxycycline or penicillin can shorten the disease course and exudation, possibly also the nephritis, or hinder it.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome and its prevalence in the present status of private forestry enterprises in Japan.

Currently there are no limitations on age of employment on private forestries in Japan. Hence, it was hypothesized that in these kind of enterprises, elderly chain saw operators, or those with long-term exposure, might be at higher risk of developing hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). We consequently investigated the prevalence of HAVS in 447 chain saw workers on private forestries in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, with particular reference to age and exposure period. Of this population, 43 (9.6%) had signs and symptoms of vibration-induced white finger (VWF), and among these workers the severity of

Tick magnets: The occupational risk of tick-borne disease exposure in forestry workers in New York.

BACKGROUND: Outdoor workers, such as forestry workers, are at an increased risk for contracting tick-borne diseases due to their prolonged time spent in tick habitats. Although well studied in Europe, no studies have been conducted with forestry workers in the Northeastern United States since 1990s. METHODS: Full-time forestry workers and two comparison groups (volunteer firefighter/first responders and indoor/healthcare workers) within New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Regions 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 were recruited for this cross-sectional seroprevalence study. Blood draws we

Chainsaw operators' exposure to occupational risk factors and incidence of professional diseases specific to the forestry field.

Purpose. This article focuses on detailed studies regarding the analysis of occupational risk factors on health and occupational disease, namely, the influence of noise, hand-arm vibration, wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index and exposure to particulates. Methods. This study measured the equivalent acoustic level (LAeq), daily vibration exposure (A(8)), WBGT index and particulate concentration in the respirable area of the worker. The inferential analysis consisted of the application of specific statistical methods: a probability plot with 95% confidence interval, the Anderson-Darling stat

Impact of forestry on total and methyl-mercury in surface waters: distinguishing effects of logging and site preparation.

Forestry operations can increase the export of mercury (both total and methyl) to surface waters. However, little is known about the relative contribution of different forestry practices. We address this question using a paired-catchment study that distinguishes the effects of site preparation from the antecedent logging. Runoff water from three catchments, two harvested and one untreated control, was sampled biweekly during one year prior to logging, two years after logging, and three years after site preparation. The logging alone did not significantly increase the concentrations of either t

Risk of tick-borne diseases in various categories of employment among forestry workers in eastern Poland.

Among the zoonotic agents causing occupational diseases, those transmitted by ticks are very important, in particular the spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi which are the common cause of occupational Lyme borreliosis in forestry and agricultural workers. The objective of this study was an evaluation of the exposure of forestry workers employed at individual workplaces to infection with tick-borne pathogens (especially Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes), based on epidemiological investigation and serologic tests. Epidemiological studies covered 111 forestry employees from eastern Poland employed i

Anti-Leptospira Seroprevalence and Associated Risk Factors among Forestry Workers in Lower Saxony, North-West Germany.

As leptospirosis is re-emerging, a seroprevalence study was conducted, assessing the prevalence of anti-Leptospira IgG antibodies and infection-associated risk factors among forestry workers (FWs) in Lower Saxony, Germany, to develop targeted public health measures. Sera of 877 FWs, sampled in 2016, were tested for anti-Leptospira seropositivity by commercial IgG-ELISA. Data on demographics and Leptospira-specific exposures, knowledge, sources of information, and preventive measures were collected by standardized, self-administered questionnaire. A subset of 244 sera was retested via in-house
