The influence of core self-evaluation, mindful awareness, & anger rumination on forgiveness.

Forgiveness is crucial for emotional wellbeing and good mental health. It is therefore important to understand what cognitive processes may promote forgiveness to achieve optimal outcomes for individuals. There is some evidence to suggest that core self-evaluation (CSE) is related to how forgiving an individual may be. However, these studies have shown that this influence may be mediated by other cognitive processes. To date, the combined role of anger rumination and mindfulness as potential mediators has not been considered. This is despite recognized associations with constructs that underly

Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Anger: Resources and Risk Factors for Italian Prison Inmates.

The adjustment of prison inmates is recently becoming a social concern. In the current study we focused on the role of gratitude, interpersonal forgiveness, and anger, which have been widely addressed as likely to influence people's health and adaptive behaviors, in shaping prison inmates' psychological wellbeing and criminal attitudes. Participants were 104 male prison inmates aged between 24 and 75 (Mage = 46.63, SD = 11.38) imprisoned in Northern Italy who were asked to fill in an anonymous self-report questionnaire. Results highlighted that all dimensions considered play an important, albe

Forgiveness therapy in a maximum-security correctional institution: A randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Forgiveness Therapy is proposed as a novel approach to rehabilitation for men in a maximum-security correctional institution to alleviate psychological compromises. METHOD: In a two-tiered study, volunteer participants within a correctional institution (N = 103) were asked to report past experiences of abuse and unjust treatment prior to their first crime and were measured on anger, anxiety, depression, hope and forgiveness. Twenty four of the most clinically compromised participants were selected from this initial assessment, with pairs first matched on certain characteristics and

What determines forgiveness in close relationships? The role of post-transgression trust.

Relationship closeness is one of the best predictors of forgiveness. But what is the process by which closeness encourages forgiveness? Across three studies, we employed a mix of experimental and correlational designs with prospective (N = 108), scenario (N = 71), and recall (N = 184) paradigms to test a multiple mediation model. We found consistent evidence that the positive association between relationship closeness and forgiveness may be explained by levels of post-transgression trust in the offender. Moreover, trust always played the main mediating role in the forgiveness process, even whe

Comparison of forgiveness and anger-reduction group treatments: a randomized controlled trial.

Interventions to promote forgiveness are effective. However, in what ways and in comparison to what other treatments is still unresolved. College students (n=112) who had been hurt in the past and struggled to overcome their negative experiences of it participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to one of two treatments, one focused on promoting forgiveness and one focused on reducing anger for past hurts, or a waiting list control. Treatment consisted of six 90-minute sessions held in small groups led by one facilitator over the course of 3 weeks. Results of three-level (time withi

Negative affect and anger rumination as mediators between forgiveness and sleep quality.

Research indicates that forgiveness of interpersonal transgressions relates to better sleep quality, whereas maintaining feelings of anger and hostility relates to poorer sleep quality. However, the mechanisms explaining these relationships have yet to be determined. We examined whether negative affect and anger rumination mediate the relationship between forgiveness of others and sleep quality using a sample of 277 undergraduates from a medium-sized Midwestern Catholic university. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing forgiveness of others (situational and dispositional)

Implicit and explicit self-concepts of forgiveness in women with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: The tendency to forgive is associated with traits such as agreeableness and neuroticism, mental well-being, and interpersonal functioning. Given documented associations with interpersonal conflict and aggression in borderline personality disorder (BPD), forgiveness (or, lack thereof) may be particularly relevant for BPD symptomatology but remains understudied. This study examines forgiveness in BPD compared to a heterogeneous clinical control group without personality disorder (CC), exploring its associations with aggression and interpersonal dysfunction using both direct (self-rep

Self-forgiveness is associated with increased volumes of fusiform gyrus in healthy individuals.

Self-forgiveness (SF) involves a process through which negative moral emotions directed at the self are replaced by benevolence and acceptance. Lower SF scores can be associated with less self-compassion, higher psychological distress, and lower life dissatisfaction. However, neural correlates of SF have not been investigated yet. We enrolled a total of 79 healthy individuals. The Self-Forgiveness Scale (SFS), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were evaluated. Voxel-wise correlational

Association of Psychopathology Symptoms, Self-Compassion, and Forgiveness in Patients With Pulmonary Embolism.

Background Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially life-threatening disease with both physical and psychological impacts. The psychological distress in the early phase of the disease has not been previously studied in the literature.  Methods The study sample included patients with PE with or without deep vein thrombosis. All subjects included in the study prospectively completed the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) questionnaire, the Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS), and the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) during their hospitalization for PE. Results Forty-four PE patients were included in the

Self-forgiveness in fibromyalgia patients and its relationship with acceptance, catastrophising and coping.

OBJECTIVES: Forgiveness influences health through numerous mechanisms, but commonly it is thought to reduce stress, increase healthy behaviour, and promote social support, thereby positively impacting health and wellbeing. Self-forgiveness has been given considerable attention in relation to health and wellbeing. Fibromyalgia (FM) patients had lower forgiveness of others and self-forgiveness as compared to controls. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship of self-forgiveness (FS) with the impact and severity of FM, acceptance, catastrophising, and coping. METHODS: We evaluated 22

The dynamic interplay of mourning and forgiveness in the early development of the self and psychic structure.

Mourning has received considerable attention in the psychoanalytic literature. Beginning with Freud's 1917 investigation, the central role of mourning in psychical development via identification has been articulated and subsequently elaborated upon by various authors (e.g., Klein, 1940; Schafer, 2005). Forgiveness, on the other hand, has until recently received considerably less attention, perhaps because of the strong religious and moral connotations often associated with it (Lansky, 2009a). Contemporary writers exploring the psychoanalytic implications of mourning and forgiveness, however, h

The effects of counterfactual thinking on unilateral forgiveness: Can victims do it on their own?

When people reflect on past interpersonal conflicts (e.g., being attacked, criticized, or excluded), they often replay events in their minds, recalling what actually happened and imagining how things could have gone differently, thus engaging in counterfactual thinking. We investigated the types of counterfactuals they generate and whether counterfactual thinking influences their willingness to forgive. Results from Study 1 showed that, when recalling a past offense, victims generated more additive ("If only X had") than subtractive ("If only X had not") counterfactuals. Study 2 found that add

Partner-Specific Dependency and Guilt as Predictors of Forgiveness in Spanish University Women.

Interpersonal transgressions often threaten the stability of the relationship. Within the scope of romantic relationships, physical violence and sexual infidelity have been considered the most difficult transgressions to forgive. Similarly, two variables considered relevant for forgiveness within the context of the couple are partner-specific dependency and the guilt experienced by the offended person. In that way, this research aims to approach the understanding of the forgiveness process of such transgressions. To this end, an experimental study was designed (N = 173 university women; Mage =

Forgiveness and PTSD among veterans: the mediating role of anger and negative affect.

Man-made traumatic events such as combat and terrorism may cause individuals to develop various forms of psychopathology, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression. Veterans who engage in combat experienced negative emotions such as anger, hostility and aggression. Forgiveness may buffer these feelings and prevent the development of psychiatric problems, in that it is a way of decreasing negative feelings and increasing positive feelings. The aim of the current study was to examine the mediating role of anger and negative affect on the relationship between forgiveness and

Forgiveness as a mediator of the relationship between PTSD and hostility in survivors of childhood abuse.

It was hypothesised that forgiveness mediates the relationship between PTSD and hostility within a population of adult childhood abuse survivors. Of the three components of forgiveness-self, other, and situation-self and situation forgiveness were posited as potent mediators of the PTSD and hostility relationship. No differences in the mediational role of forgiveness in sexual versus physical abuse and female versus male abuse survivors were hypothesised. As posited, overall forgiveness mediated the PTSD-hostility relationship and the forgiveness of self and situation were strong mediators. Th

Victim vs bystander: balancing a transgressor's intention and apology in Chinese children's forgiveness.

Forgiveness plays a crucial role in social functioning, particularly in collectivist cultures such as China, where relational orientation and group harmony are highly valued. Children's forgiveness is shaped by multiple social cues, including the transgressor's intention, apology, and the social perspective from which the transgression is evaluated. However, how these cues jointly influence forgiveness in a collectivist context remains underexplored. This study employed scenario-based experiments to investigate how Chinese children aged 4-6, assigned to either a victim or a bystander perspecti

Real World Data on Forgiveness to Uncomplete Adherence to Bictegravir/ Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Alafenamide.

Background: forgiveness is the ability of a given regimen to maintain complete viral suppression despite a documented imperfect adherence. We explored forgiveness of bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide. Methods: drug refills were used to calculate the percent day covered (PDC) as a proxy of adherence. Forgiveness was calculated as the achieved rate of a selected HIV-RNA threshold by a given level of imperfect adherence. Results: 281 adult PLWH were followed for 343 patient/years. Adherence was very high with a median of 98% (IQR 95-100%). A PDC as low as 70% was sufficient to obtai
