Prickle1 regulates differentiation of frontal bone osteoblasts.

Enlarged fontanelles and smaller frontal bones result in a mechanically compromised skull. Both phenotypes could develop from defective migration and differentiation of osteoblasts in the skull bone primordia. The Wnt/Planar cell polarity (Wnt/PCP) signaling pathway regulates cell migration and movement in other tissues and led us to test the role of Prickle1, a core component of the Wnt/PCP pathway, in the skull. For these studies, we used the missense allele of Prickle1 named Prickle1Beetlejuice (Prickle1Bj). The Prickle1Bj/Bj mutants are microcephalic and develop enlarged fontanelles betwee

Posttraumatic intradiploic epidermoid cyst of frontal bone.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts constitute about 1% of all intracranial tumors. They are usually congenital in origin and are thought to derive from ectodermal cell inclusions occurring during closure of the neural tube. Twenty-five percent of these are found in the skull as intradiploic epidermoid cysts. These intradiploic cysts are usually congenital, slow growing, and can grow to large size without causing symptoms. We present a case of intradiploic epidermoid cyst of frontal bone developed due to childhood trauma. The cyst expanded and eroded the walls of the frontal sinus causing proptosis,

Radionuclide bone scan in frontal sinus osteoma.

Frontal sinus osteomas, whether cortical or cancellous by morphologic radiologic appearance, appear to represent metaplasia rather than neoplasia occurring at the frontal-ethmoid suture line. These osteomas are not infrequently found completely or partially within the frontal sinus or adjacent ethmoid complex. Regardless of specific anatomic site, they occur at the embryologic junction of enchondral and membranous frontal bone. Those osteomas which produce mechanical complications (ostial obstruction or facial deformity or proptosis) give clear indication for surgical intervention. A much larg

Bone scintigraphic diagnosis in acute frontal sinusitis.

The diagnostic value of Technetium 99m Methylene Diphosphate bone scintigraphy was evaluated in 21 patients, 10 of them with acute frontal sinusitis and a "fluid level" on sinus radiography. Pathologic accumulation of the radioisotope over the region corresponding to the diseased frontal sinus was observed in 9 of these 10 patients, 5 of them having a marked accumulation. The patients with marked accumulation of the bone-seeking radioisotope had a more severe clinical course of the disease than those who had a moderate or no accumulation of the radioisotope. Marked accumulation of the radioiso

Surgical treatment of severe frontal bone fracture.

Craniofacial trauma can lead to several complications. The combined fractures of anterior and posterior walls of the frontal bone are almost always followed by lesions in nasofrontal orifices and disruption of nasofrontal ostia or ducts, a significant factor for the development of early and late complications after sinus fractures. This article reports a case of trauma patient, who underwent neurological evaluation and at first showed good general condition. Computed tomography noted fracture of the anterior and posterior walls of the frontal sinus and small foci of pneumocephalus in the cereb

Giant frontal mucocele occurring 32 years after frontal bone fracture: a case report.

Giant mucoceles of the frontal sinus are rare but their recognition is important in the differential diagnosis of proptosis and fronto-orbital lesions. The authors describe a patient with frontal giant mucocele with intracranial as well as orbit and ethmoid sinus involvement. Thirty-two years after a frontal sinus fracture, a 51-year-old female presented with headache, and left exophthalmos and ophthalmoplegia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a giant frontal sinus mucocele with extension into the left anterior cranial fossa. The mucocele was treated with a trans

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the frontal bone - A radiologic-pathologic correlation.

We present a case of 27-year-old female who presented for a progressive frontal swelling with ipsilateral headache. Subsequent CT scan revealed an extradural and expansile multiloculated mass with thin and strongly enhanced septations and MRI evaluation showed internal hyperintensity on T2 with no restriction of diffusion and confirmed the multiple cystic spaces with enhancing septations and rare hemorrhagic fluid-fluid levels. Surgery was performed and diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst was made on frozen section. Identification of USP6 fusion gene by in situ hybridization technique permitted

[Reconstruction of frontal bone, periorbital and calvarial defects with autogenic bone].

The repair of bony defects in the craniomaxillo-facial region in 40 patients is reported. In 22 patients with autogenous calvarian bone grafts no changes in the grafted bone were found. However, in 4 out of 11 patients with iliac bone grafts, partial bone resorption was observed. Repair of bony defects of the face with autogenous calvarian bone is the therapy of choice. It is superior to any other transplant or implant.

Aneurysmal bone cyst concomitant with fibrous dysplasia in the frontal bone.

Secondary aneurysmal bone cyst in fibrous dysplasia is exceedingly rare, especially in the skull and particularly in the frontal bone. We present a case of aneurysmal bone cyst concomitant with fibrous dysplasia in the frontal bone in a 15-year-old male patient presenting with headache and euphoria with an uncharacteristic imaging appearance and treated successfully by total resection.

Frontal Bone is Thicker in Women and Frontal Sinus is Larger in Men: A Morphometric Analysis.

Cranial bone thickness and frontal sinus size are important parameters to be known before cranial procedures. Deep-learning systems have become popular for making bulk analyses to diagnose diseases/disorders and plan treatment algorithms in diverse fields of medicine. Deep-learning systems would be valuable assets also for cranial procedures. Deep-learning systems need normative values and variances of the population on which they are used. In the present study, the authors aimed to find out the normative values for skull bone thickness at 4 anatomical locations, and frontal sinus size. the au

Three-dimensional technology and bone morphogenetic protein in frontal bone reconstruction.

Osteoinductive bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) may be used in humans to facilitate healing of bony defects. The effect of different BMPs is, as with many other growth factors, highly dependent on the delivery vehicle. Bovine type I collagen is currently used in the clinical setting as a carrier and has been approved in several countries for human use. Here, we report the reconstruction of a frontal bone defect using heparin together with bovine type I collagen, hyaluronic acid, and fibrin as vehicles for BMP-2. A bony structure was created on the back of the patient by treating the latissim

Closure of the frontal sinus ostium by a block of bone: unexpected cause of frontal mucocele.

Mucoceles are benign, slow-growing lesions. Frontal sinus mucoceles are caused by the obstruction of the sinus ostium and seromucous secretions fill the inside of the cyst. The size of the cyst and the destroyed sinus walls gradually expands. Cystic mass can lead to orbital or intracranial complications when it overflows beyond the boundaries of the sinus. In this manuscript, we presented an unexpected cause of frontal mucocele in which the closure of the frontal sinus ostium is caused by a block of bone. A case of orbital complications is presented.
