Sickle cell centers of tomorrow. Part I: Regional information centers.

Regional sickle cell organizations are needed to assemble, catalogue, and distribute information, to maintain teaching programs, to serve as referral agencies, and to aid individuals with sickle cell hemoglobinopathies in obtaining maximal benefit from existing community services. The governing body should be representative of the entire area. More than half of the voting members should be adults with the sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease and/or their relatives. A suggested minimal staff could consist of a secretary-librarian and a director. The usefulness of the "Center" to patients, e

Medical Crowdfunding for Patients Undergoing Orthopedic Surgery.

Crowdfunding for medical expenses is growing in popularity. Through several websites, patients create public campaign profiles to which donors can contribute. Research on medical crowdfunding is limited, and there have been no studies of crowdfunding in orthopedics. Active medical crowdfunding campaigns for orthopedic trauma, total joint arthroplasty, and spine surgery were queried from a crowdfunding website. The characteristics and outcomes of crowdfunding campaigns were abstracted and analyzed. For this study, 444 campaigns were analyzed, raising a total of $1,443,528. Among the campaigns t

Rethinking global health financing: from philanthropy to public good.

Global health financing has been dominated by philanthropic and donor-driven vertical programs over the past two decades. While this model has achieved major public health gains, it has also entrenched power asymmetries, fostered fragmentation, and undermined the sustainability and sovereignty of health systems in low- and middle-income countries. This perspective critiques the ethical and practical shortcomings of donor-driven approaches, including the marginalization of local ownership and democratic accountability. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of relying on voluntary, unpredi

In-hospital severe COVID-19 in a philanthropic tertiary hospital setting: is asthma a concern? A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The frequency of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases among asthmatics has been reported to be reduced. However, the findings regarding the association between asthma and the risk of severe COVID-19 have been divergent. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether asthma is associated with a reduced risk of development of severe COVID-19. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective analysis on COVID-19 surveillance databases at two tertiary-level hospitals in São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: The medical records of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 between March and August 2020 were reviewed in a

Abortion-related crowdfunding post-Dobbs.

Previous research on abortion-related crowdfunding campaigns found that they are impacted by stigma around abortion and rarely successful. This paper analyzes crowdfunding activity in the US following a leak of the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs. V. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a time period that saw increased financial support of abortion access funds. Crowdfunding campaigns that included "abort" or "abortion" and were created between May 2 and November 8, 2022 were recorded from the GoFundMe and GiveSendGo crowdfunding platforms. Using advocacy to increase investment in enteric vaccine development.

Catalyzing and sustaining momentum for long-term research investments can be a challenge, especially for enteric pathogens like ETEC andShigella that are most threatening to the health of children in low-resource areas, and whose vaccines would not be for global use. The 2018 Vaccines Against Shigella and ETEC (VASE) Conference included a workshop focused on building the capacity of scientists to communicate about their own research and advocate for additional attention and funding for enteric disease and vaccines research. Workshop presenters shared best practices and examples of advocacy, co

Hermann Mooser, Typhus, Warsaw 1941.

Hermann Mooser (1891-1971), a Swiss rickettsiologist, sent his friend Peyton Rous (1879-1970) of the Rockefeller Institute (New York) a telegram on November 3, 1941, asking for financial help for the manufacture of typhus vaccine in Zurich for the Warsaw Ghetto. His explanatory letter from November 4 reached Rous too late to have any influence on the negative decision (by the Rockefeller Foundation and the American Red Cross) in this matter. Contrary to Weindling's affirmation Mooser was neither in Warsaw in 1941, nor was he a member of the Swiss Sanitary Missions to the eastern front.

Braces, wheelchairs, and iron lungs: the paralyzed body and the machinery of rehabilitation in the polio epidemics.

The successful fund raising appeals of the March of Dimes employed images of cute crippled children standing on braces and forearm crutches, sitting in wheelchairs, or confined to iron lungs. Those who had to use these devices as a result of polio, however, were often stigmatized as cripples. American cultural antipathy to these assistive devices meant that polio survivors often had to overcome an emotional and psychological resistance to using them. Whatever their fears, polio survivors quickly discovered the functionality of braces and wheelchairs. By confronting the cultural stigma associat

Improving access to colorectal cancer screening through medical philanthropy: feasibility of a flexible sigmoidoscopy health fair for uninsured patients.

OBJECTIVES: Only half of eligible patients in the United States undergo colorectal cancer (CRC) screening as recommended. Hypothesizing that the medical philanthropy platform may be effective in improving access to CRC screening, we aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of a flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS)-based CRC screening "health fair" for uninsured patients. METHODS: Uninsured patients older than 50 years who had not undergone CRC screening in the preceding 10 years were recruited through local free clinics and health fairs. A standard medical clinic was transformed into a fully functional en

Race and the politics of polio: Warm Springs, Tuskegee, and the March of Dimes.

The Tuskegee Institute opened a polio center in 1941, funded by the March of Dimes. The center's founding was the result of a new visibility of Black polio survivors and the growing political embarrassment around the policy of the Georgia Warm Springs polio rehabilitation center, which Franklin Roosevelt had founded in the 1920s before he became president and which had maintained a Whites-only policy of admission. This policy, reflecting the ubiquitous norm of race-segregated health facilities of the era, was also sustained by a persuasive scientific argument about polio itself: that Blacks we

Gluten has recently been introduced into the diet of the Mediterranean and European population, but a considerable proportion has not adapted to this change and has developed intolerance to gluten. At least one million EEC citizens are gluten intolerant. In Italy each year 12 million ECU is spent in the diagnosis of uncomplicated gluten intolerance, 10 million ECU for complex diagnosis and 32 million ECU for long-term complications and malignancies. The total financial load of gluten intolerance, in its present state, is about 150 million ECU/year in Italy. Four million ECU is actually needed

Addressing homelessness among people with mental illnesses: a model of long-term philanthropic effectiveness.

Foundations are often criticized for their short attention spans and inability to continue funding the toughest social problems. Homelessness among people with mental illnesses is considered among the most intractable of social issues. This paper explores the role of permanent supportive housing in reducing homelessness among the mentally ill; the role of the Corporation for Supportive Housing in developing, authenticating, and disseminating its model; and its long-term funding relationship with the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, which has facilitated this trajectory. The paper tells the story o
