CLINICO-PATHOLOGIC FINDINGS AND PATHOGEN SCREENING IN FUR SEALS (ARCTOCEPHALUS AUSTRALIS AND ARCTOCEPHALUS TROPICALIS) STRANDED IN SOUTHEASTERN BRAZIL, 2018.

Among pinnipeds, four Otariidae species (eared seals) have been reported as occasional or frequent vagrants along the coast of Brazil, mainly in the southern region. These animals usually arrive debilitated during winter and are directed to rehabilitation. Nevertheless, available information on sanitary aspects of stranded pinnipeds in Brazil is limited. Increased fur seal strandings (n=23) were recorded during the 2018 winter season in southeast Brazil (Iguape, Ilha Comprida, and Ilha do Cardoso, Sao Paulo State) compared to 2017 (n=2). Of these 23 fur seals, two were found dead and were in a

A new species of Parafilaroides (Nematoda: Filaroididae) in three species of fur seals (Carnivora: Otariidae) from the Southern Hemisphere.

Blocks of frozen lungs of 2 Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus Wood Jones, 1925), 2 New Zealand fur seals (A. forsteri [Lesson, 1828]), and 1 sub-Antarctic fur seal (A. tropicalis [Gray, 1872]) from 3 different locations (Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, respectively) were examined and found to contain lung parasites. This represents the first thorough description and identification of a new species, Parafilaroides normani, from an eared seal (Otariidae) in the Southern Hemisphere. The new species is described, illustrated, and differentiated from the 6 recognized

Profiling of the Guadalupe Fur Seal (Arctocephalus philippii townsendii) Fecal Bacteriome in Relation to Alopecic Syndrome.

Alopecic syndrome in Guadalupe fur seals, Arctocephalus philippii townsendii (GFSs), was first observed a decade ago, coinciding with an anomalous warm sea surface temperature event and shifts in foraging behaviors of otariid pinnipeds from Mexican North Pacific colonies. With no evidence of dermatophytes or ectoparasites commonly associated with alopecia, it has been proposed that nutritional or metabolic changes, secondary to altered foraging, may increase the risk of alopecia. We employed 16S rRNA gene deep sequencing to investigate changes in the fecal bacteriome of GFS with and without al

First report of pulmonary cysticercosis caused by Taenia crassiceps in a Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus).

The cestode Taenia crassiceps parasitizes in the intestine of domestic and wild carnivores, especially in red foxes. Usually, the metacestode stage, also known as Cysticercus longicollis, is located in muscles, peritoneal and pleural cavity of wild rodents. In this case, larval stages were found in a female Cape fur seal, which lived in a German zoo since June 1998. In January 2019, the animal presented clinical signs in terms of inappetence and reduced mobility and, within a short time, it developed dyspnoea and died. Pathological and parasitological examinations were performed. In a large ma

A RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN NORTHERN FUR SEALS (CALLORHINUS URSINUS) IN UNITED STATES AQUARIA FROM 1976-2022.

Pathology of wild northern fur seals (NFS) (Callorhinus ursinus) is well documented; however, data on NFS under professional care are limited. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate causes of morbidity and mortality in 67 NFS housed in long-term professional care in United States aquaria from 1976-2022, including individuals born in the wild and those born in professional care. A review of necropsy and histopathology records was conducted to identify causes of morbidity and mortality, as well as associations among age, sex, and wild versus aquarium birth origin. Major causes

Isolation of Toxoplasma gondii from the placenta of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and potential transplacental transmission of the parasite.

Toxoplasma gondii infects almost all warm-blooded animals, including marine mammals. Toxoplasmosis has been reported in wild and captive marine mammals in North America; however, no viable T. gondii strains have been isolated from northern fur seals. In this study, reproduction and T. gondii infection status were investigated in 10 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus), from tissues collected from 2012 to 2024 in China. Toxoplasma gondii infections were determined by the modified agglutination test (MAT), PCR, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining, and isolation of the parasite by bioassay in

Multiple mating strategies explain unexpected genetic mixing of New Zealand fur seals with two congenerics in a recently recolonized population.

Human impacts on natural systems can cause local population extinctions, which may promote redistribution of taxa and secondary contact between divergent lineages. In mammalian populations that have mating systems shaped by polygyny and sexual selection, the potential for hybridization to ensue and persist depends on individual and demographic factors. At Macquarie Island, a recently formed fur seal population is comprised of both sexes of breeding Antarctic (Arctocephalus gazella) and subantarctic (A. tropicalis) fur seals, and an itinerant collection of male New Zealand fur seals (A. forster

Using electrical impedance tomography to estimate tidal volume in bottlenose dolphins and cape fur seals in seawater and on land.

Marine mammals possess specialized respiratory adaptations that enable efficient gas exchange and resilience to extreme pressures during diving, yet direct observation of lung mechanics under pressure has been logistically challenging. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) measures real-time changes in thoracic impedance, and provides continuous, regional maps of pulmonary air distribution. We validated EIT for estimating tidal volume (VT) in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) and Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) both on land and in water. EIT reliably tracked VT in both taxa, showing

Serologic Investigation of Leptospira spp., Sarcocystis neurona, and Toxoplasma gondii in Guadalupe Fur Seals (Arctocephalus townsendi) from Guadalupe Island, Mexico.

The Guadalupe fur seal (GFS; Arctocephalus townsendi) is susceptible to the ecologic impacts of anomalous ocean warming events, which have led to prey scarcity that, in turn, affects its feeding habits, nutritional condition, and survival at Guadalupe Island, Mexico. Concurrently, ocean warming has also caused increased outbreaks of zoonotic diseases in North Pacific pinnipeds. This study assessed the exposure to zoonotic disease agents (Leptospira spp., Sarcocystis neurona, and Toxoplasma gondii) in GFS on Guadalupe Island (2016, 2017, and 2020), during a period of persistent ocean warming an

Ecological, morphological, and molecular studies of Acanthocheilonema odendhali (Nematoda: Filarioidea) in northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) on St. Paul Island, Alaska.

Studies of northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus Linnaeus, 1758) infection by the filariid nematode Acanthocheilonema odendhali were carried out in 2011-2012 on St. Paul Island, Pribilof Archipelago, Alaska. Skins of 502 humanely harvested northern fur seals from haul-out areas of five rookeries, Polovina (n = 122), Morjovi (n = 54), Zapadni (n = 72), Lukanin (n = 109), and Gorbatch (n = 145), were examined. A. odendhali was found in 18% of northern fur seals. The prevalence of infection ranged from 12.5% up to 22.9% on different haul-out areas on the island. The mean intensity of infection w

B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma in a free-ranging South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis).

Lymphomas are malignant neoplasms of the hematopoietic system arising from lymphocytes with highly variable biologic behavior. B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma (B-SLL) is a non-Hodgkin lymphoma infrequently described in domestic and wild animals. The present study describes a case of B-SLL in a free-ranging adult male Arctocephalus australis in Brazil. The main necropsy findings included poor body condition, generalized lymphadenomegaly, severe and diffuse splenomegaly, and multiple, white to yellow nodules in the kidneys and small intestine. Histologically, these organs were partially or tot

Coxiella burnetii in northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) placentas from St. Paul Island, Alaska.

The decline in the number of northern fur seal (NFS; Callorhinus ursinus) pups on St. Paul Island, Alaska, has led to multidisciplinary research, including investigation into issues of reproductive health and success. Given the recent identification of Coxiella burnetii in the placenta of two other marine mammal species, NFS placentas were collected from Reef rookery on St. Paul Island, Alaska, during the 2010 pupping season, examined histologically, and tested for C. burnetii using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Of 146 placentas examined, gram-negative intratrophoblastic bacteria that were

Pairing ultrasonography with endocrinology to elucidate underlying mechanisms of successful pregnancy in the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus).

Reproductive success is one of the central tenets of conservation management programs, yet the inability to study underlying physiological processes in a minimally-invasive manner and the unpredictable nature of wild animal populations leaves large gaps in our knowledge of factors critical to successful reproduction in wild species. This study integrated ultrasonography of the reproductive tract and analysis of reproductive hormones in 172 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) to identify intrinsic factors associated with reinitiating embryonic growth at the end of diapause. Within the firs

Update on the prevalence of the hookworm, Uncinaria lucasi, in northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) on St. Paul Island, Alaska, 2011.

Prevalence of hookworms (Uncinaria lucasi Stiles, 1901) was determined in the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus Linnaeus, 1758) on St. Paul Island (SPI), Alaska in July and August, 2011. Three of 61 (4.9%) dead pups harbored 1 to 13 adult hookworms each in their intestines. Parasitic larvae (L(3)) of hookworms were recovered from the blubber of 4 of 133 (3%) of subadult males (SAMs) examined. One parasitic L(3) was detected from each infected SAM. Adult U. lucasi (n = 3) were found in the intestine of 1 of 105 SAMs examined (0.95%). This is the first documented finding of adult U. lucasi

Prevalence of Coxiella burnetii and Brucella spp. in tissues from subsistence harvested northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) of St. Paul Island, Alaska.

BACKGROUND: The northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is an important cultural and nutritional resource for the Aleut community on St. Paul Island Alaska. In recent years, an increasing number of zoonotic pathogens have been identified in the population, but the public health significance of these findings is unknown. To determine the prevalence of Coxiella burnetii and Brucella spp. in northern fur seal tissues, eight tissue types from 50 subsistence-harvested fur seals were tested for bacterial DNA by real-time polymerase chain reaction. FINDINGS: Of the 400 samples tested, only a single

Testosterone levels in hair of free-ranging male northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) in relation to sampling month, age class and spermatogenesis.

Information about the reproductive status of free-ranging pinnipeds provides useful insight into their population dynamics, which is essential to their management and conservation. To determine the reproductive status of individual animals, blood sampling is often required despite being impractical to collect in open water. Hair as an endocrine marker has been used to less invasively assess the reproductive status of terrestrial animals. However, it is unknown whether pinniped reproductive status can be assessed from hair samples. Here, we examine testosterone levels in hair obtained from 57 m

SURVEY FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASE IN THE SOUTH AMERICAN FUR SEAL (ARCTOCEPHALUS AUSTRALIS) POPULATION AT PUNTA SAN JUAN, PERU.

The Peruvian population of the South American fur seal ( Arctocephalus australis ) is a distinct evolutionarily significant unit that is endangered. One of the largest rookeries for this species in Peru is located within the Punta San Juan marine protected area (15°22'S, 75°12'W). To better understand the current health status of this population, exposure to 10 pinniped pathogens was evaluated in adult female fur seals (n=29) via serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques in November 2010. The results suggest this population is naïve to canine and phocine distemper viruses (serum

Light and electron microscopical observations on the terminal airways and alveoli of the lung of the SA (Cape) fur seal Arctocephalus pusillus.

During activities of the Sea Fisheries Research Institute at Kleinzee, lung samples from six South African fur seals were collected. The terminal airways showed pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with numerous goblet cells and occasional brush cells. Smooth muscle, cartilage and submucosal glands were also present. The epithelium changed over a short distance, in the smaller airways, through pseudostratified columnar non-ciliated to simple cuboidal epithelium with no goblet cells. The columnar non-ciliated cells contained secretory granules, which appeared to be serous. No Clara cel
