Aeromonas piscicola in Chilean Salmon Farming: Genomic Insights, Phenotypic Traits, Virulence and Field Immune Response.

The incidence of furunculosis in juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, has increased in recent years in Chile, with isolates of Aeromonas salmonicida being the primary cause. However, in some cases, molecular diagnostics failed to identify the etiological agent. We previously demonstrated that a proportion of undiagnosed cases was produced by a new A. salmonicida strain. In those cases where the pathogen remained unidentified, we isolated colonies with an A. salmonicida-like appearance. Subsequent phylogenetic analysis presented in this work grouped those A. salmonicida-like isolates within t

Lipolytic activity of Staphylococcus aureus strains from disseminated and localized infections.

Lipase production of 425 S. aureus strains isolated from patients with different clinical diagnoses and healthy carriers were measured by a specific method, using emulsified trioleoylglycerol substrate. Strains isolated from patients with septicemia showed significantly higher lipase activity than osteomyelitis strains (p = 0.011), impetigo strains (p = 0.002) and strains isolated from healthy relatives of patients with recurrent furunculosis (p = 0.019). Recurrent furunculosis and pyomyositis strains had significantly higher (p = 0.002 and 0.032, respectively) lipase activity than septicemia

Vaccination strategies in freshwater salmonid aquaculture.

The focus of this chapter is antibacterial vaccines. The main salmonid species in freshwater aquaculture is the rainbow trout. Other salmonid species are produced on a limited scale. The most important bacterial fish diseases in European freshwater aquaculture are the rainbow trout fry syndrome-RTFS-(Flavobacterium psychrophilum) and enteric redmouth disease-ERM-(Yersinia ruckeri) which are widespread and cause serious epizootics, while furunculosis (Aeromonas salmonicida) is endemic, only giving overt disease under extremely stressing conditions. In the hatchery, there is a need for vaccinati

Severe pediculosis capitis in a nursery school girl.

Pediculosis capitis is the most frequent ectoparasitosis around the world. The infestation is caused by Pediculus humanus capitis (head louse), which affects hair, scalp, and skin. It rarely presents with more symptoms and in the majority of the cases, it shows a benign course if treated properly. We present the case of a nursery school girl with head lice infestation for 18 months. She did not improve after the shampoo treatment. This case was associated with furunculosis, skin lesions, multiple adenopathies, and anemia. Initially, the presence of boils, alopecia, and lymphadenopathy was evid

Skin-isolated, community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus: in vitro resistance to methicillin and erythromycin.

During a 10-month period, skin culture specimens were taken from 1680 healthy outpatients with a variety of community-acquired skin infections. Staphylococcus aureus was found in 1035 (61.6%) of these patients. In vitro resistance to methicillin and erythromycin was 1.0% and 42.9%, respectively. Resistance rates to erythromycin in patients with furunculosis and impetigo were 51.5% and 26.2%, respectively (p less than 0.001). The emergence of erythromycin-resistant strains may be the result of widespread use of this drug in our geographic area. There is also the possibility that certain bacteri

Transcriptional Signatures of Immune, Neural, and Endocrine Functions in the Brain and Kidney of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in Response to Aeromonas salmonicida Infection.

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) serves as one of the most important commercial fish with an annual production of around 800,000 tonnes. However, infectious diseases, such as furunculosis caused by Aeromonas salmonicida infection, results in great economic loss in trout culture. The brain and kidney are two important organs associated with "sickness behaviors" and immunomodulation in response to disease. Therefore, we worked with 60 trout and investigated transcriptional responses and enrichment pathways between healthy and infected trout. We observed that furunculosis resulted in the activ

Genomic and virulence insights of Western European Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and development of Galleria mellonella infection assay.

AIMS: Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is the etiological agent of furunculosis, a fish disease highly aggressive for salmonids and responsible for significant economic losses in aquaculture worldwide. This study aimed to explore genomic and antimicrobial resistance traits of Western European A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida strains and to develop an adapted infection model using larvae of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella to assess the pathogenic potential of this psychrophilic subspecies. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida strains, isolated from sal

Rapidly growing mycobacterial infections after pedicures.

BACKGROUND: Rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) can cause a variety of cutaneous and systemic diseases. The causative organisms are typically Mycobacterium fortuitum or Mycobacterium chelonae (also known as Mycobacterium abscessus). Primary cutaneous lesions may develop after a variable latent period, from weeks to several months, and usually result from direct inoculation after trauma, from injections, or during surgery via contaminated medical instruments. Recently, investigators from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Ga, and the California Department of Health Services

Treatment of perianal fistulas with human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells: a canine model of human fistulizing Crohn's disease.

AIM: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of intralesional injection of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) in canine anal furunculosis dogs. MATERIALS & METHODS: Dogs naturally develop an immune-mediated disease called canine anal furunculosis, which shares many features with human fistulizing Crohn's disease. RESULTS: The hESC-MSCs were well tolerated and 1 month postinjection, accompanied by reduced serum levels of IL-2 and IL-6, two inflammatory cytokines associated with Crohn's disease. All six dogs were found to be completely free of fistulas a

Expansion of the pRAS3 Plasmid Family in Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and Growing Evidence of Interspecies Connections for These Plasmids.

Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is a pathogenic bacterium responsible for furunculosis in salmonids. Following an outbreak of furunculosis, the infection can be treated with antibiotics, but it is common to observe ineffective treatment due to antibiotic resistance. This bacterium has a wide variety of plasmids responsible for this resistance. Among them, pRAS3 carries a tetracycline resistance gene. Several variants of this plasmid have been discovered over the years (pRAS3-3432 and pRAS3.1 to 3.4). During the present study, two new variants of the plasmid pRAS3 were identified (pRAS

Influence of systemic antibiotics on the treatment of dogs with generalized demodicosis.

Canine generalized demodicosis (CGD) is a skin disease with distinct breed predispositions. Secondary bacterial infections are common. Dogs typically receive miticidal therapy in combination with antibacterial treatment. Whether antibiotics influence the duration of acaricidal therapy is unknown at the moment. There is also debate over how common short-tailed Demodex mites occur in demodicosis. This study evaluated the influence of systemic antibiotics on the course of CGD, the occurrence of short-tailed Demodex mites in demodectic dogs and the influence of furunculosis on treatment outcome. Severe infections of Panton-Valentine leukocidin positive Staphylococcus aureus in children.

Infections caused by Panton-Valentine leukocidin-positive Staphylococcus aureus (PVL-SA) mostly present as recurrent skin abscesses and furunculosis. However, life-threatening infections (eg, necrotizing pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis, and osteomyelitis) caused by PVL-SA have also been reported. We assessed the clinical phenotype, frequency, clinical implications (surgery, length of treatment in hospitals/intensive care units, and antibiotic treatments), and potential preventability of severe PVL-SA infections in children.Total, 75 children treated for PVL-SA infections in our in- and outpati

Autochthonous furuncular myiasis in the United States: case report and literature review.

Most cases of furuncular myiasis in the United States are acquired during travel to other countries. Autochthonous cases are infrequently reported and are most often due to accidental infestation of humans by larvae of flies belonging to the genus Cuterebra, commonly known as "rabbit bot flies" or "rodent bot flies." We describe a case of furuncular myiasis due to Cuterebra larvae in the hand of a patient residing in Wisconsin. The infestation was acquired while the patient gardened near a seepage lake during August. The patient developed papular lesions on the hand and received therapy for pr

[The role of microorganisms in the genus Staphylococcus in the origin and development of nasal furuncles].

It is shown that Staphylococcus aureus carriage in the nasal mucosa and nasal furuncle risk are related. The severity of nasal furunculosis depends much on the spectrum of biological and virulent characteristics of the microorganism. It is recommended to determine pathogenetic potential of the causing agent by comprehensive examination of its virulence.

Leishmaniosis and generalized demodicosis in three dogs: a clinicopathological and immunohistochemical study.

This paper describes the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of the skin lesions in three dogs with leishmaniosis and generalized demodicosis. Diffuse alopecia, crusts, folliculitis and furunculosis, as commonly seen in generalized demodicosis, were prominent in all the dogs. MicroIscopically, there was a diffuse and perifollicular superficial and deep granulomatous dermatitis and, in two dogs, both Copyright Demodex canis mites and Leishmania spp. amastigotes were observed in the same lesions. Numerous Mac387(+)macrophages were observed in the inflammatory infiltrates, but mac
