[Septic shock with liver abscess in an immunocompetence patient. Presentation of an unusual Fusobacterium nucleatum infection].

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium septicemia with septic metastasis is a very rare and potentially serous condition when complicated by septic shock. Most cases have been described in patients with humoral immunity disorders and/or severe underlying chronic disease. CASE REPORT: A 24-year-old immunocompetent woman with a tonsil infection developed F. nucleatum septic shock with liver abscess formation. Outcome was rapidly favorable with antibiotic treatment and adapted intensive care, probably favored by the absence of an associated immune deficit. DISCUSSION: Despite its low incidence, F. nucleatum

Septic arthritis and osteomyelitis in a bovine digit: a mixed infection of Actinomyces pyogenes and Fusobacterium necrophorum.

A 4-year-old beefmaster cow was examined for a left hind leg lateral claw lameness due to septic arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint and associated osteomyelitis of the second and third phalanges. Actinomyces pyogenes and Fusobacterium necrophorum, which have been demonstrated previously to act synergistically in ovine heel abscesses, were isolated from the affected digit. A claw amputation was performed because of the advanced destructive nature of the lesion.

Prediction of non-coding RNAs in Fusobacterium nucleatum-infected mice using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: The anaerobic commensal Fusobacterium nucleatum is scarce in healthy subgingival dental biofilms but is highly prevalent in periodontal pockets. Numerous genome-wide association studies and gene expression studies using microarrays or RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) have been performed to better understand the genetic architecture of periodontal disease. However, these investigations have limited predictive capacity for identifying RNAs, particularly non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). The mechanism of regulation of ncRNAs by F. nucleatum to alter disease progression in mice has not been thoroughly

A discrepant presentation of bacteremia in the emergency department linked to a Fusobacterium nucleatum infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum is an anaerobic bacterium mainly responsible for acute or chronic infection of the ear, nose, and throat, potentially bacteremic with a risk of extraoral metastatic infection. Bacteremia occurs mainly in the elderly or in immunodeficient individuals, with high mortality. F. nucleatum is not the first cause of tonsillar infection in emergency departments, which are more often the consequence of a viral or streptococcal infection, but it is a risk factor for severe bacterial infection, especially in a viral pandemic context. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old E

Antimicrobial profiles of Prevotella spp. and Fusobacterium nucleatum isolated from periodontal infections in a selected area of southern Italy.

In view of the increasing antibiotic resistance of anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria, we determined the antimicrobial profile of 55 periodontal anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria correlated with human infections, comprising 16 strains of Fusobacterium nucleatum and 39 strains of Prevotella spp. isolated from periodontal pockets of 26 adults suffering from chronic periodontitis. All the strains of F. nucleatum were susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, doxycycline, metronidazole, moxifloxacin and levofloxacin, whilst 2/16 strains were both resistant to amoxicillin and beta-lactamase-positive

About a Possible Impact of Endodontic Infections by Fusobacterium nucleatum or Porphyromonas gingivalis on Oral Carcinogenesis: A Literature Overview.

Periodontitis is linked to the onset and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), an epidemiologically frequent and clinically aggressive malignancy. In this context, Fusobacterium (F.) nucleatum and Porphyromonas (P.) gingivalis, two bacteria that cause periodontitis, are found in OSCC tissues as well as in oral premalignant lesions, where they exert pro-tumorigenic activities. Since the two bacteria are present also in endodontic diseases, playing a role in their pathogenesis, here we analyze the literature searching for information on the impact that endodontic infection by P. gi

Disseminated Fusobacterium necrophorum Infection Without Jugular Venous Thrombophlebitis: An Atypical Presentation of Lemierre's Syndrome.

Lemierre's syndrome is classically characterized by Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia with jugular venous thrombophlebitis, typically affecting young adults following oropharyngeal infections. We report an unusual case of disseminated F. necrophorum infection in a 53-year-old man who presented without pharyngitis or jugular venous thrombophlebitis, instead manifesting with septic pulmonary emboli, bilateral empyema, liver abscess, and portal vein thrombophlebitis. This case highlights the importance of recognizing atypical presentations of invasive Fusobacterium infections, which are associ

Fusobacterium nucleatum mediates endothelial damage and increased permeability following single species and polymicrobial infection.

BACKGROUND: Numerous lines of evidence link periodontal pathobionts and their virulence factors with endothelial damage. Most research has been conducted using single species infections at the exclusion of other periodontal microorganisms that have been identified in vascular tissue. Here, we assessed endothelial infection with either single or mixed periodontal species infection and examined their effect on endothelial damage and permeability. METHODS: Cell surface abundance of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) or endothelial permeability following infection with Porphy

Anterior sacral meningocele infected with Fusobacterium in a patient with recently diagnosed colorectal carcinoma - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Anterior sacral meningoceles are rare, and usually occur with other malformations of the posterior lower spine. While these are more frequently reported in pediatric cohorts, we report a case in an elderly woman. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a 71 year-old woman with a recently diagnosed colorectal adenocarcinoma who presented with a severe bacterial meningitis. The cerebrospinal fluid cell count revealed a pleocytosis of 80,000 cells/μl and a severe disturbance of the blood-brain-barrier. Fusobacterium nucleatum was cultured as the causing pathogen. A lumbar MRI showed, in addi

Human Infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum without Jugular Venous Thrombosis: A Varied Presentation of Lemierre's Syndrome.

Lemierre's syndrome is also known as postangina septicemia, which is commonly caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum also known as Necrobacillus and also by other microorganisms like Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, and Bacteroides. Though the disease starts as an upper respiratory tract infection, it may spread and cause thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. It may present itself through cranial nerve palsy or sepsis involving distant organs like the lungs or bones. It is also known as forgotten disease because of its rarity. Fusobacterium necrophorum usually causes in

Periprosthetic Hip Joint Infection Involving Fusobacterium nucleatum With Subsequent Isolation of Acinetobacter baumannii: A Case Report.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication following total hip arthroplasty and is most commonly caused by Gram-positive organisms. Infections involving anaerobic bacteria or multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens are rare and particularly challenging to manage. We report a case of periprosthetic hip infection in a female patient in whom Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) was initially isolated, followed by Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) later in the treatment course. Initial management with debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) was unsucce

Sternoclavicular Septic Arthritis Caused by Parvimonas micra and Fusobacterium nucleatum Infection with Intra-articular Corticosteroid Administration.

Sternoclavicular septic arthritis is a rare form of septic arthritis that can lead to fatal complications, such as abscess formation and mediastinitis, in the absence of prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment. A man in his 40s presented with pain in the right sternoclavicular joint area, and after a joint injection of steroids was administered, he was diagnosed with septic sternoclavicular arthritis caused by Parvimonas micra and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Gram staining of a specimen obtained from the abscess formation area led to early suspicion of anaerobic infection, and appropriate antib

Clinical Significance of Fusobacterium nucleatum Infection and Regulatory T Cell Enrichment in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

A variety of pathogenic microorganisms promote tumor occurrence and development through long-term colonization in the body. Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is abundant in precancerous esophageal lesions and is closely related to the malignant progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The invasion of exogenous microorganisms can reshape the immune microenvironment, make the immune system incapacitated, and assist tumor cells in immune escape. A variety of pathogenic microorganisms induce the recruitment of regulatory T cell (Tregs) to allow tumor cells to escape immune su

Caveolin-1 serves as a negative effector in senescent human gingival fibroblasts during Fusobacterium nucleatum infection.

It is well established that aging is associated with increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. Fusobacterium nucleatum is a well-known bacterial species that plays a central bridging role between early and late colonizers in the human oral cavity. Further, the ability of F. nucleatum to invade gingival fibroblasts (GFs) is critical to the development of periodontal diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying the age-related infection of GFs by F. nucleatum remain unknown. We used young (fourth passage) and senescent (22nd passage) GFs to investigate the mechanisms of F. nucleatum infec

Bad news itself or just the messenger? The high mortality of Fusobacterium spp. infections is related to disseminated malignancy and other comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium species are pleomorphic, obligate anaerobic gram-negative bacilli. They are difficult to culture and grow slowly. If antibiotic treatment is initiated prior to blood cultures, the bacteria might evade detection. This is a comprehensive report on mortality in non-bacteraemia fusobacterial infection. METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively in adults having a positive culture with Fusobacterium spp. admitted during 2000-2012 at the medical department. Data on culture specimens, number of cultures, admission and culture dates, patient age, gender, clinical disease,

A rare brain abscess caused by co-infection with Fusobacterium nucleatum and Actinomyces meyeri : Case report and a literature review.

Brain abscesses are rare but life-threatening infections that may result from contiguous spread or hematogenous dissemination, with odontogenic infections being an important source. We report the first case from Turkey of a polymicrobial brain abscess caused by Actinomyces meyeri and Fusobacterium nucleatum in an immunocompetent 81-year-old male with poor oral hygiene and a history of untreated dental infection. The patient presented with headache and altered mental status, and neuroimaging revealed a right frontal abscess. Surgical excision was performed, and microbiological evaluation identi

Mass Spectrometry-Based Untargeted Metabolite Profiling to Discover Molecular Consequences of Mammalian Cell Infection with Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Untargeted metabolite profiling, aka metabolomics, offers a powerful technology to potentially reveal fundamental molecular mechanisms whereby a perturbation in cell metabolism leads to an alteration in cell growth or physiological maintenance. Notably, this discovery approach does not require any preconceived notion of underlying molecular mechanisms, affording an opportunity to effectively shine a molecular mechanistic spotlight in a direction that an informed investigator may not have thought to consider. Fusobacterium nucleatum colonization has been linked to the initiation and promotion o

Size-tunable nanogels for cascaded release of metronidazole and chemotherapeutic agents to combat Fusobacterium nucleatum-infected colorectal cancer.

Bacteria play important roles in tumor formation, growth and metastasis through downregulating immune response and initiating drug resistance. Herein, size-tunable nanogels (NGs) have been developed to address the existing size paradox in tumor accumulation, intratumoral penetration and intracellular release of therapeutics for the treatment of Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum)-infected colorectal cancer. Zinc-imidazolate frameworks with doxorubicin (DOX) loading and folate grafting (f-ZIFD) were mixed with metronidazole (MET) and encapsulated in NGs through thiol-ene click crosslinking o
