OBJECTIVE: To determine the resistance and susceptibility to antimicrobial compounds of Fusobacterium necrophorum isolates from bovine hepatic abscesses.
PROCEDURE: 37 isolates of F necrophorum (21 subsp necrophorum and 16 subsp funduliforme) isolated from bovine hepatic abscesses were obtained from cultures grown and maintained in anaerobic brain heart infusion broth. A broth dilution method was used as an initial screening to determine general susceptibility to 31 antimicrobial compounds. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 19 of the antimicrobial compounds that inhibited growth

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium responsible for localized infections of the oropharynx that can evolve into bacteremia and/or septic thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein or peritonsillar vein, called Lemierre's syndrome. To identify microbial genetic determinants associated with the severity of this life-threatening disease, 70 F. necrophorum strains were collected and grouped into two categories according to the clinical presentation: (i) localized infection, (ii) bacteremia with/without Lemierre's syndrome. Comparative genomic analyses revealed two clades wit

Fusobacterium necrophorum is part of the normal oropharyngeal flora and can result in a life-threatening systemic infection known as Lemierre's syndrome. A rare presentation of F. necrophorum infection is seen in the female genital tract and is typically due to obstetric infections. Here we present a unique case of F. necrophorum without traditional features of Lemierre's syndrome with the female genital tract as a primary site. A 50-year-old female presents with a two-month history of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and weight loss. She ultimately developed bilateral lower extremity necroti

CONCLUSION: There was a high prevalence of Fusobacterium necrophorum (FN) in patients with chronic tonsillitis in the age group 15-23 years. This indicates that FN might play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic tonsillitis in this age group, which is also the age group in which chronic or recurrent tonsillitis is most common.
OBJECTIVES: The role of FN in patients with acute and chronic tonsillitis is unclear. Thus, this study investigated the occurrence of FN in tonsils of patients with chronic tonsillitis. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of FN in patients t

Sore throat is common in primary healthcare. Aetiological studies have focused on the presence of a limited number of pathogens. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of a wide range of bacteria and viruses, including Fusobacterium necrophorum, in patients with pharyngotonsillitis and in asymptomatic controls. A prospective case control study was performed in primary healthcare in Kronoberg County, Sweden. Patients (n=220) aged 15 to 45 years with a suspected acute pharyngotonsillitis, and controls (n=128), were included. Nasopharyngeal and throat swabs were analysed for

BACKGROUND: The typical clinical manifestation of an infection with the obligate anaerobic, gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria Fusobacterium necrophorum is the Lemierre syndrome. As the cause of osteomyelitis and mastoiditis factors of the normal bacteria flora are more likely to be found than Fusobacterium necrophorum. Nevertheless, Necrobacillosis is an important differential diagnosis of complicated courses of mastoiditis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Because the clinical courses of mastoiditis with osteomyelitis may differ a lot, making the appropriate diagnosis more difficult, consistently and

Fusobacterium necrophorum can cause endemic pharyngitis and the Lemierre syndrome. Four previous case reports and one epidemiologic study have documented that some F. necrophorum pharyngitis patients develop bacteremia without developing the complete Lemierre syndrome. We report two more patients who have bacteremic F. necrophorum pharyngitis. We summarize the clinical presentation of these six patients. All received early diagnosis and excellent response to antibiotics. We speculate that prompt antibiotic treatment may have prevented the more serious Lemierre syndrome. Adolescents and young a

Human infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum usually involves F. necrophorum subsp. funduliforme rather than F. necrophorum subsp. necrophorum, which is a common pathogen in animals. Lemierre's syndrome, or postanginal sepsis, is the most common life-threatening manifestation. Tonsillitis is followed by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and then a septicemia with septic emboli in lungs and other sites. Recent evidence suggests that F. necrophorum can be limited to the throat and cause persistent or recurrent tonsillitis. F. necrophorum is unique among non-spore-forming ana

It had already been shown with a single virulent strain (A42) of Fusobacterium necrophorum that suspension of the fusobacteria in sub-lethal doses of broth cultures of other bacteria reduced the minimum infective dose (greater than 10(6) organisms) for mice by subcutaneous inoculation, sometimes to less than 10 organisms. The present study extended the known range of bacteria with strong infectivity-enhancing properties to include Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella oxytoca and Staphylococcus aureus; and those with weaker effect to include Bacillus subtilis, 'Bacteroides melaninogenicus', Clostridium

BACKGROUND: Anaerobic bacteria are uncommon etiologic agents of acute mastoiditis in children. However, recent studies suggest an increase in the incidence of Fusobacterium necrophorum mastoid infections in the last two decades.
METHODS: A surveillance study performed over 3.5 years in a tertiary pediatric medical center identified 7 children with acute F. necrophorum mastoiditis. Clinical, laboratory, and treatment data were collected by file review.
RESULTS: Five of the 7 children presented in the last year of the study. All 7 children were less than 26 months old on admission, and none ha

A mixed infection of Bacteroides fragilis and Fusobacterium necrophorum was resistant to treatment with penicillin even though a pure F. necrophorum infection could be successfully treated with penicillin. Since B. fragilis alone did not produce infection, these results indicate that B. fragilis can protect F. necrophorum from penicillin in vivo. The extent of protection afforded by a strain of B. fragilis was related to its level of resistance to penicillin. Only a few cells of B. fragilis were required in the initial bacterial injection. Moreover, protection was demonstrated when B. fragilis

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium necrophorum is primarily involved in ear, nose and throat (ENT) infections, and exceptionally causes meningitis. We aimed at describing specific clinical features associated with cases of F. necrophorum meningitis.
METHODS: Cases of F. necrophorum meningitis were prospectively collected by a network of 259 pediatric wards covering 60% of French pediatric wards between 2001 and 2024. Children were categorized in 2 groups: "isolated" meningitis and "complicated" meningitis, defined by ≥1 local or systemic complication (mastoiditis, subperiosteal or epidural abscess, Le

BACKGROUND: To date, the gold-standard treatment for sternoclavicular septic arthritis has been surgery due to the high failure and complication rates of medical treatment. In particular, presentation of Fusobacterium sternoclavicular septic arthritis has been rarely reported and very sparsely investigated, and only one other case report of septic arthritis caused by this pathogen exists in literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an otherwise healthy 38-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with sternoclavicular septic arthritis as a complication of Fusobacterium necrophorum media

Jaundice, conjunctival hyperemia, and acute kidney injury (AKI) are the characteristics of leptospirosis. However, it is not well known that Fusobacterium necrophorum infection can have a clinical picture similar to that of leptospirosis. A 38-year-old man was admitted with jaundice, conjunctival hyperemia, and AKI for 7 days. Chest CT scan showed multiple pulmonary nodules, atypical for leptospirosis. We started treatment with IV piperacillin-tazobactam and minocycline. He became anuric and was urgently started on hemodialysis on the second hospital day. Later on, blood cultures grew Fusobact

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium necrophorum is an important anaerobic bacterium associated with the progression and severity of ovine footrot. However, genomic information on footrot associated isolates, particularly those recovered from severe lesions, remains limited. Here, we report the genomic characterization of F. necrophorum subsp. necrophorum strain JKSFn-26, isolated from a severe ovine footrot lesion in Kashmir, India.
METHODS: The isolate was characterized phenotypically and assigned to the previously identified JKS-F3 leukotoxin (lktA) variant by partial gene sequence analysis. Whole ge

Fusobacterium necrophorum, an anaerobic Gram-negative pathogen, causes necrotic cattle infections, impacting livestock health and the US feedlot industry. Antibiotic administration is the mainstay for treating F. necrophorum infections, although resistance hampers their effectiveness. Vaccination, especially targeting outer membrane proteins (OMPs) due to their antigenic properties and host specificity, offers an alternative to antibiotics. This study identified high-binding-affinity adhesion proteins from F. necrophorum using binding and pull-down assays with bovine adrenal gland endothelial

A young woman in her 20s presented with fever, abdominal pain and malodourous vaginal discharge. She was found to be in septic shock, in the setting of a recent medical abortion with subsequent intrauterine device placement. Her blood cultures grew Fusobacterium necrophorum Despite appropriate antibiotic therapy, the fever failed to defervesce. Subsequent evaluation revealed septic thrombophlebitis of the right gonadal vein and branches of the right iliac vein. She improved with a prolonged course of targeted antimicrobial therapy.

Acute mastoiditis is a well-recognized complication of acute otitis media. Despite the absence of a universally accepted standard of care, recent data indicate a global shift toward more conservative management, with escalation to invasive interventions primarily in the presence of complications or failure of initial therapy. The emergence of Fusobacterium necrophorum as an uncommon, yet clinically significant pathogen, challenges this paradigm and underscores the need for heightened vigilance among clinicians.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a gram-negative anaerobic bacillus most commonly implicated in oropharyngeal infections and their subsequent complications, including septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, or Lemierre syndrome. However, limited case reports document evidence of pelvic infections associated with Fusobacterium as well, such as pelvic peritonitis and pelvic septic vein thrombophlebitis. In this case series, we discuss two occurrences of Fusobacterium necrophorum bacteremia from a presumed gynecologic source and present a literature review of other reported cases of Fus
