[The importance of sickle cell anemia in a pediatric environment in Gabon].

According studies run during four years (1992-1995) in the Pediatric Unit of Libreville Hospital, to determine importance and features of sickle-cell disease in children in Gabon, profit and mode of regular follow-up, data of hospitalisation and management of children with sickle-cell disease were found as follow: Sickle-cell disease is third rank of admission motivations (13% of total admissions), and first after 4 years. Mortality is 8.4% of total mortality. Main causes of hospitalisation were acute anemia, painful crisis, and bacterial infections. Half of children had no medical follow-up,

[Types of sugar diabetes encountered in internal medicine in Gabon].

In the 108 patients with diabetes (75 men and 33 women between the ages of 15 and 86 years) hospitalized in the Internal Medicine Department of the Libreville Hospital Center between January 1, 1989 and December 31, 1991, 53 were easily classified, 12 being due to alcohol-induced chronic calcific pancreatitis, two to insulin-dependent diabetes, and 39 to non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Fifty-five patients treated with insulin were not immediately classifiable including 11 who were obese and probably should not have required insulin. In the remaining 44 patients who were not overweight, the you

[First appearance of monkey pox in human beings in Gabon].

The authors report on the first coming out in Gabon of human monkey-pox. Four children in the same family were simultaneously attacked. In one of the two fatal cases, diagnosis of monkey-pox was confirmed by the isolation of the virus. In the three other cases, diagnosis was based on clinical and epidemiological findings. The coming out of monkey-pox in Gabon squares with sporadic coming out of this zoonosis observed in the humid tropical forests of west and Central Africa. Two fatal cases presented some symptoms of hemorrhagic fever and cutaneous symptoms did not dominate the clinical feature

Hendersonula toruloidea as an agent of mycotic foot infection in Gabon.

Pathogenic fungi were isolated from 149 of 210 Gabonese patients with clinical signs of tinea pedis. Hendersonula toruloidea was isolated from 51 patients (34.2%), either alone (in 25%) or in association with a dermatophyte species or Candida albicans. Clinical signs of H. toruloidea infection closely resembled those of dermatophyte infection except that hyperkeratinization of the soles was most often associated with infection by H. toruloidea. H. toruloidea mycelium could be readily distinguished from dermatophyte mycelium on direct examination of skin scrapings. All the H. toruloidea isolate

Focal spleen lesions in loiasis: A pilot study in Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Infection with the filarial nematode Loa loa, endemic in Central and Western Africa, has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. A number of reports described the presence of spleen nodules, originating from degenerating microfilariae, in humans and animals infected with L. loa. The long-term consequences of this process on individuals chronically exposed to infection in terms of spleen function and possible link with excess mortality are unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of focal spleen lesions, their evolution over time, and markers of

Dynamic and features of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Gabon.

In a context where SARS-CoV-2 population-wide testing is implemented, clinical features and antibody response in those infected have never been documented in Africa. Yet, the information provided by analyzing data from population-wide testing is critical to understand the infection dynamics and devise control strategies. We described clinical features and assessed antibody response in people screened for SARS-CoV-2 infection. We analyzed data from a cohort of 3464 people that we molecularly screened for SARS-CoV-2 infection in our routine activity. We recorded people SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis, age,

Bats are rare reservoirs of Staphylococcus aureus complex in Gabon.

The colonization of afro-tropical wildlife with Staphylococcus aureus and the derived clade Staphylococcus schweitzeri remains largely unknown. A reservoir in bats could be of importance since bats and humans share overlapping habitats. In addition, bats are food sources in some African regions and can be the cause of zoonotic diseases. Here, we present a cross-sectional survey employing pharyngeal swabs of captured and released bats (n=133) in a forest area of Gabon. We detected low colonization rates of S. aureus (4-6%) and S. schweitzeri (4%) in two out of four species of fruit bats, namely

Prevalence of the sickle cell trait in Gabon: a nationwide study.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an important cause of death in young children in Africa, which the World Health Organization has declared a public health priority. Although SCD has been studied at the continental scale and at the local scale, a picture of its distribution at the scale of an African country has never been given. The aim of this study is to provide such a picture for the Republic of Gabon, a country where precisely the epidemiology of SCD has been poorly investigated. To this effect, 4250 blood samples from persons older than 15 were collected between June 2005 and September 2008 i

[Onchocerciasis in the area of Lastourville, Gabon. Clinical and entomological aspects].

The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) has implemented a series of surveys aimed at evaluating the long-term impact of its activities. The region of Lastourville (Gabon) is one of the selected sites for this study. A total of 886 persons was examined for skin lesions, and 459 out of them participated in detailed ocular examinations. Blackflies were collected during one year and dissected. Although the focus was found to be hypoendemic (prevalence of nodules: 7.7%), the frequency of onchodermatitis was relatively high. The lesions of the anterior segment of the eye were rare, b

[Current aspects of sickle cell disease in children in Gabon].

BACKGROUND: Clinical manifestations and course of sickle-cell anemia are variable. Knowledge about the factors, possibly geographic, that influence prognosis are still scanty. POPULATION AND METHODS: Data of hospitalization and management of children with sickle-cell disease were studied during two years (1992-1993) in the Pediatric Unit of Libreville Hospital. They concerned 205 admissions of 171 children and 131 outpatients. RESULTS: The main causes of hospitalization were: acute anemia (36 cases before the age of 5 years); painful crisis whose frequency increased with age (23% before 5 ye

[Digestive cryptosporidiosis in young children in an urban area in Gabon].

A 27 month epidemiological survey of cryptosporidiosis in stools was conducted in 288 Gabonese children aged between 0 and 2 years (mean 10.2 months). By at least one of two staining techniques, acid-fast and direct immunofluorescence, the rate of infection was determined to be 24%. The rate was 28% in cases of acute diarrhea, in striking contrast with the low prevalence of 14.8% in uninjured gastroenteritus subjects (p < 0.05). The notion of asymptomatic carriers was clearly demonstrated. The maximum of 34.4% was observed for infants aged between 6 and 12 months (p < 0.02). In cases of malnut

Urinary Metabolic Profiling in Volunteers Undergoing Malaria Challenge in Gabon.

The interaction of malaria parasites with their human host is extensively studied, yet only few studies reported how P. falciparum infection affects urinary metabolite profiles and how this is associated with immunity. We present a longitudinal study of the urinary metabolic profiles of twenty healthy Africans with lifelong exposure to malaria and five malaria-naïve Europeans, who were all challenged with direct venous inoculation of live P. falciparum sporozoïtes (PfSPZ) and followed up until they developed symptoms or became thick blood smear positive (TBS). Urine samples were collected befo

Haemosporidian Parasites of Reptiles and Birds from Gabon, Central Africa.

Haemosporidian parasites are protozoans that infect many different vertebrate hosts. Re-examination of the diversity of haemosporidian parasites, using molecular tools, has generally led to rearrangements of traditional classifications. In this study, we explored the diversity of haemosporidian parasites infecting some species of reptile and birds living in the forests of Gabon, Central Africa, by analyzing a collection of 128 samples of reptiles and birds. We found that samples from 2 tortoise species (Pelusios castaneus and Kinixys erosa) and 3 bird species (Turtur afer, Ceratogymna atrata,
