Guillot, Asress, Richardson, Glass, and Miller (2008) recently reported that treadmill gait analysis does not detect motor deficits in animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The authors studied aged C57BL/6J mice administered the neurotoxin 1-methyl 4-phenyl 1-, 2-, 3-, 6-tetrahydropyridine to model PD, and a small number of presymptomatic superoxide dismutase 1 G93A mice to study ALS. Several key issues merit discussion to put their observations in perspective. An increasing number of research groups are applying treadmill gait analysis to their rode

INTRODUCTION/AIM: As humans return to the Moon, safe efficient ambulation and fall prevention on the lunar surface are key concerns. The analysis of gait from archived Apollo mission video footage is now possible with pose estimation video analysis software. Thus, this study aims to retrospectively quantify parameters of Apollo astronauts' stance and gait on the Moon.
METHODS: Publicly available National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) footage of astronauts ambulating on the Lunar surface was examined using body pose analysis software. Goniometric lower limb joint/torso angles and

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease associated with alterations in posture and gait. The aim of this study was to assess the gait of AS patients using pedobarography and a markerless motion capture system. This is the first study of this population to combine these two methods. Twelve AS patients and twelve healthy controls were enrolled in this study. An instrumented gait analysis of both groups was performed using pedobarography and Microsoft Kinect v2. The AS group was significantly older than the controls (p < 0.05). The AS group showed a significantly l

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The study describes changes in gait parameters (temporal-spatial parameters, kinematic parameters represented by the global Gait Deviation Index) of individuals with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) compared to the healthy population. The hypothesis assumed a difference in the observed parameters between the two mentioned groups.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, the temporal-spatial parameters and Gait Deviation Index (GDI) of a cohort of 45 AIS patients (36 girls and 9 boys with the mean age of 15.2 years, the mean Cobb angle of the thoracic curve of

BACKGROUND: the primary aim of this study is to analyse the energy parameters of patients with Down syndrome compared to a control group and secondly to verify whether the sport activity leads to differences in energy expenditure.
METHODS: 3 groups of subjects were identified: 8 healthy subjects and 147 subjects with Down syndrome, of whom 14 played sports at least once a week. An energy index was calculated, given by the ratio between potential and kinetic energy. Next, kinetic ad potential energy parameters were extrapolated at 60% of the gait cycle (propulsion phase).

BACKGROUND: Long-term follow-up of sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is well established; however, little is known about the effects of extensive surgery in the pelvic and perineal region, which involves disruption of muscles providing maximal support in normal walking.
METHODS: Thirteen patients operated on at birth for SCT with extensive muscle dissection underwent gait studies with a Vicon 3-D motion analysis system with 6 cameras. Results were compared with 15 age-matched controls. Statistical analysis was performed with Mann-Whitney test; correlations were sought with Spearman's correlation

Until now the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of vascular parkinsonism (VP) have been disputed. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether quantitative gait analysis can differentiate between the gait pattern of patients with VP and the gait pattern of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). Twelve patients with VP, 12 patients with PD, and 10 neurologically nondiseased controls were examined by quantitative gait analysis. Patients with VP, having a similar gait velocity and stride length, showed relatively preserved arm swing with markedly more anteflexion in th

Analysis of gait in patients with acute unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders was performed using foot switches and electromyography, with the aid of a telemetry system. Among the eight parameters set for the analysis, the occurrence rate of abnormality in the coefficient of variation (CV) was the highest (78%) for the time from heel strike to forefoot strike, followed by that of the location of maximum monophasic contraction of the gastrocnemius during stance, swing and stance. No significant laterality concerning the abnormally increased CV value in those parameters was found except for

Gait is a highly coordinated motor behavior that integrates musculoskeletal and neuromotor control. Analysis of gait parameters is widely used in murine studies as functional biomarkers of locomotor development and disease progression. However, there has yet to be a comprehensive characterization of how gait matures during the rapid growth preceding skeletal maturity, an age range often used in preclinical gait studies. We analyzed gait longitudinally in healthy C57BL/6J mice from 6 to 16 weeks of age, timed to the onsets of sexual and skeletal maturity, respectively. More than 30 gait paramet

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by motor dysfunction and complex gait abnormalities. Traditional linear methods often fail to capture the intricate movement patterns in PD. This review highlights Multiscale Entropy (MSE) as a promising tool for assessing gait dynamics, offering deeper insights into movement variability across multiple temporal scales. MSE distinguishes healthy and pathological gait patterns, enhancing early diagnosis and disease monitoring. Advances in wearable sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have boosted MSE's

This study aimed to integrate deeplabcut (dlc) with our Automatic Gait Analysis Through Hues and Areas (AGATHA) algorithm. Prior work with AGATHA shows that it can be used to understand spatiotemporal gait adaptations in multiple disease models. However, AGATHA cannot detect kinematic variables, like joint angles, which dlc was designed to measure. Here, these two approaches are integrated, and the gait variables that can be achieved with both methods are compared. To train dlc, hand digitization of high-speed videos was conducted to estimate the location of several key anatomical markers; the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gait impairment and reduced mobility are typical features of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD) and atypical parkinsonian disorders (APD). Quantitative gait assessment may have value in the diagnostic workup of parkinsonian patients and as endpoint in clinical trials. The study aimed to identify quantitative gait parameter differences in iPD and APD patients using sensor-based gait analysis and to correlate gait parameters with clinical rating scales.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Patients with iPD and APD including Parkinson variant multiple system atrophy and progressiv

BACKGROUND: Calcaneal fractures are associated with substantial morbidity and socioeconomic impact, frequently leading to limited functional outcome and high economic costs. The Oxford foot model (OFM) has been reported as a valid addition to the biomechanical examination of the foot. The aim of our study was to analyze the gait of patients after operative repair of a calcaneal fracture in relation to functional outcome and radiographic findings.
METHODS: Thirteen patients with a calcaneal fracture underwent gait analysis with OFM at a minimum of six months after open surgery. Intersegmental

Eighteen patients who had Paget disease were evaluated in our gait-analysis laboratory. The results were compared with those of ten healthy age-matched control subjects in order to quantitate the biomechanical changes and to describe the specific patterns of walking that occur secondary to bowing of a lower extremity. Kinetic and kinematic data were acquired using infrared video cameras and force platforms; electromyographic data were obtained using surface electrodes. Velocity and cadence were decreased and stride time and double-limb support time were increased in the patients who had Paget

BACKGROUND: The gait analysis method that has been used in clinical practice to date is an optical tracking system (OTS) using a marker, but a markerless gait analysis (MGA) system is being developed because of the expensive cost and complicated examination of the OTS. To apply this MGA clinically, a comparative study of the MGA and OTS methods is necessary. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compatibility between the OTS and the MGA methods and to evaluate the usefulness of the MGA system in actual clinical settings.
METHODS: From March 2021 to August 2021, 14 patients underwent g

BACKGROUND: Veering occurs during blind walking, which causes individuals to deviate from crosswalks or fall off platforms. Despite being linked to static postural control, the relationship between veering and gait function (gait variability and plantar pressure), which is presumed to be related to dynamic postural control, has yet to be fully understood.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How do gait variability and plantar pressure affect veering?
METHODS: This experiment involved a walking task in which 11 blind adults were instructed to walk along a straight path using a white cane. We measured the veer

This study analysed the spatio-temporal parameters, asymmetry, variability and bilateral coordination of gait in women and men with fibromyalgia and healthy subjects walking at their usual velocity and at a faster walking velocity. Fifty-five women and 12 men with fibromyalgia were analysed. A healthy group of 44 women and 17 men was analysed as the control group. A GAITRite system was used to obtain the spatio-temporal gait parameters for the participants when walking at their usual velocity and at a faster velocity. Coefficients of variation, bilateral coordination and gait asymmetry indexes

OBJECTIVE: Gait disturbance is the main factor contributing to a negative impact on quality of life in patients with Huntington's disease (HD). Understanding gait features in patients with HD is essential for planning a successful gait strategy. The aim of this study was to investigate temporospatial gait parameters in patients with HD compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: We investigated 7 patients with HD. Diagnosis was confirmed by genetic analysis, and patients were evaluated with the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS). Gait features were assessed with a gait analyzer. W
