The evolution of parietal cortex in primates.

Many of the adaptive changes in the functional organization of parietal cortex of humans emerged in past in the early primates as they depended on visually guided forelimb use to grasp branches and food. Currently, human, apes and some monkeys have four well-defined subdivisions of anterior parietal cortex, areas 3a, 3b, 1 and 2 of Brodmann. In some of the smaller monkeys, and in stepsirrine primates (galagos, lemurs, and lorises), especially areas 1 and 2 are less developed, and the existence of an area 2 is questionable. In galagos, area 3b, the homologue of S1 in other mammals, has a more p

Dengue virus infections in Nigeria: a survey for antibodies in monkeys and humans.

A retrospective serological survey for dengue immunity was conducted in Nigeria to determine the prevalence of infection in man and non-human primates. Preliminary haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) tests revealed that 63% of persons tested had HI antibodies against one or more of the following flaviviruses: dengue type 1, yellow fever, West Nile and Wesselsbron. Parallel HI and neutralization (N) tests on 179 human sera showed that six of 20 sera (30%) negative for flavivirus HI antibody contained dengue N antibody. This finding emphasized the advantage of the N test over HI in screening for d

Reversible deactivation of motor cortex reveals that areas in parietal cortex are differentially dependent on motor cortex for the generation of movement.

Primates are characterized by specializations for manual manipulation, including expansion of posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and, in Catarrhines, evolution of a dexterous hand and opposable thumb. Previous studies examined functional interactions between motor cortex and PPC in New World monkeys and galagos, by inactivating M1 and evoking movements from PPC. These studies found that portions of PPC depend on M1 to generate movements. We now add a species that more closely resembles humans in hand morphology and PPC: macaques. Inactivating portions of M1 resulted in all evoked movements being

Saving energy via short and shallow torpor bouts.

Maintaining a high and stable body temperature as observed in most endothermic mammals and birds is energetically costly and many heterothermic species reduce their metabolic demands during energetic bottlenecks through the use of torpor. With the increasing number of heterotherms revealed in a diversity of habitats, it becomes apparent that triggers and patterns of torpor use are more variable than previously thought. Here, we report the previously overlooked use of, shallow rest-time torpor (body temperature >30 °C) in African lesser bushbabies, Galago moholi. Body core temperature of three

Attempts to establish Onchocerca volvulus infection in primates and small laboratory animals.

Attempts were made to transmit O. volvulus infection to small laboratory animals and several species of primates to identify a practical laboratory host for human onchocerciasis. Infective larvae of O. volvulus of Guatemalan origin were inoculated into the following animals: rhesus monkeys, bonnet monkeys, golden spider monkeys, black spider monkeys, galagos, opossums, jirds, newborn and adult Swiss mice, kinkajou, cebus monkey, normal and splenectomized multimammate rats, and a calf. The animals were examined for signs of developing infection for up to two years after inoculation. None of the

Parallel thalamic activation of the first and second somatosensory areas in prosimian primates and tree shrews.

In Tupaia belangeri and Galago senegalensis, microelectrode recordings immediately after ablation of the representation of the forelimb in the midportion of the first somatosensory area, S-I, revealed that all parts of the second somatosensory area, S-II, remained highly responsive to cutaneous stimuli. In this way, prosimian primates, close relatives of simian primates, and tree shrews differ markedly from monkeys in which S-II is deactivated by comparable ablations, and resemble such mammals as cats and rabbits in which S-II also remains highly responsive following ablations in S-I. Thus, it

The anterior border zones of primary somatic sensory (S1) neocortex and their relation to cerebral convolutions, shown by micromapping of peripheral projections to the region of the fourth forepaw digit representation in raccoons.

In raccoons the somatic sensory neocortex is greatly expanded, with separate gyral crowns devoted to and intervening sulci separating, sensory representations of separate body parts, most strikingly those of the volar surfaces of individual forepaw digits. Most of the cortex in this region is buried in widely ramifying sulcal walls, wherein sensory projections have not been studied. We have determined mechanosensory projections to the fourth digit representation region including all neighboring sulcal walls, using tungsten microelectrodes for 3-dimensional micromapping. We found no significant

[Comparative anatomic studies of the tongue of Pan troglodytes (Blumenbach, 1799) and other primates. I. The chimpanzee tongue].

This study was carried out on a comprehensive collection of tongues of Pan troglodytes. Material of tongues of Tupaia glis, Microcebus murinus, Chirogaleus major, Lemur catta, Galago crassicaudatus, Cebus apella, and Macaca mulatta were used for comparison of the different stages of the development of the papilla foliata. The tongue of Pan exhibits longitudinal growth correlated with the growth of length of the jaws and individual age. A typical foramen caecum as it occurs in man was gross anatomically not recognizable. Seldom a small circular depression appeared in the midline close to the pa

Demarcations of the mechanosensory projection zones in the raccoon thalamus, shown by cytochrome oxidase, acetylcholinesterase, and Nissl stains.

To determine anatomically the boundaries and internal organization of the kinesthetic and cutaneous mechanosensory regions of the ventrobasal thalamus, alternate section series from electrophysiologically mapped tissues from 14 raccoons were stained for cytochrome oxidase, myelinated fibers, acetylcholinesterase, and Nissl substance. Microelectrode tracks, along with electrolytic lesions placed as tissue markers, reveal that the mechanoreceptor projection zones have higher cytochrome oxidase and lower acetylcholinesterase staining than some neighboring regions. Both these enzymatic stains reve

Cortical connections of the dorsomedial visual area in old world macaque monkeys.

The connections of a wedge of densely myelinated cortex along the dorsomedial border of V2 were determined by injecting tracers into this region in macaque monkeys. According to previous descriptions, this cortex would constitute parts of dorsal V3 and V3A, or a dorsomedial visual area, DM, homologous to the DM described in prosimians and New World monkeys. Injections of wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase or various fluorescent tracers demonstrated connections with architectonically defined V1, V2, and the middle temporal area, as well as regions of visual areas known a

Evolution of posterior parietal cortex and parietal-frontal networks for specific actions in primates.

Posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is an extensive region of the human brain that develops relatively late and is proportionally large compared with that of monkeys and prosimian primates. Our ongoing comparative studies have led to several conclusions about the evolution of this posterior parietal region. In early placental mammals, PPC likely was a small multisensory region much like PPC of extant rodents and tree shrews. In early primates, PPC likely resembled that of prosimian galagos, in which caudal PPC (PPCc) is visual and rostral PPC (PPCr) has eight or more multisensory domains where ele

Anatomy of the dura mater venous sinus of Alouatta belzebul.

The anatomy of the dura mater's venous sinuses is important in the veterinary clinical and surgical area, for cranial procedures and interventions of wild animals, in addition to assisting in the management of neurological diseases, which can prevent serious complications. The macroscopic anatomy of the venous sinuses of the dura mater of Alouatta belzebul was studied. Five adult specimens, males and females, were dissected and fixed in 10% formaldehyde solution. In the dura mater of the Alouatta belzebul, nine venous sinuses were observed, being them dorsal sagittal sinus, ventral sagittal si

Cortical projections to the two retinotopic maps of primate pulvinar are distinct.

Comprised of at least five distinct nuclei, the pulvinar complex of primates includes two large visually driven nuclei; one in the dorsal (lateral) pulvinar and one in the ventral (inferior) pulvinar, that contain similar retinotopic representations of the contralateral visual hemifield. Both nuclei also appear to have similar connections with areas of visual cortex. Here we determined the cortical connections of these two nuclei in galagos, members of the stepsirrhine primate radiation, to see if the nuclei differed in ways that could support differences in function. Injections of different r

Effects of muscimol inactivations of functional domains in motor, premotor, and posterior parietal cortex on complex movements evoked by electrical stimulation.

Parietal and frontal cortex are central to controlling forelimb movements. We previously showed that movements such as reach, grasp, and defense can be evoked from primary motor (M1), premotor (PMC), and posterior parietal (PPC) cortex when 500-ms trains of electrical pulses are delivered via microelectrodes. Stimulation sites that evoked a specific movement clustered into domains, which shared a topographic pattern in New World monkeys and prosimian galagos. Matched functional domains in parietal and frontal cortex were preferentially interconnected. We reasoned that matched functional domain

Variation in Pubic Symphysis Fusion Across Primates: Implications for Obstetric Adaptation.

OBJECTIVES: The unfused human pubic symphysis has been interpreted as an obstetric adaptation to facilitate the passage of a large-brained baby through a relatively small, bipedally adapted pelvis. The degree of fusion of the adult pubic symphysis was evaluated across primate species to gauge whether an open symphysis can be interpreted as an obstetric adaptation in humans and other primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Symphyseal fusion was assessed in 718 individuals from 67 nonhuman primate species. Variation in fusion in specimens of known ages and sex from four species (Galago moholi, Macaca

Testing the reliability of the rearticulation of osteological primate pelves in comparative morphological studies.

The evolution of human pelvic form is primarily studied using disarticulated osteological material of living and fossil primates that need rearticulation to approximate anatomical position. To test whether this technique introduces errors that impact biological signals, virtual rearticulations of the pelvis in anatomical position from computed tomography scans were compared with rearticulated models from the same individuals for one female and one male of Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Macaca mulatta, Lepilemur mustelinus, Galago senegalensis, and Nycticebus pygmaeus. Eye Size and Set in Small-Bodied Fossil Primates: A Three-Dimensional Method.

We introduce a new method to geometrically reconstruct eye volume and placement in small-bodied primates based on the three-dimensional contour of the intraorbital surface. We validate it using seven species of living primates, with dry skulls and wet dissections, and test its application on seven species of Paleogene fossils of interest. The method performs well even when the orbit is damaged and incomplete, lacking the postorbital bar and represented only by the orbital floor. Eye volume is an important quantity for anatomic and metabolic reasons, which due to differences in eye set, or posi

Localization of the synthetic progestin 3H-ORG 2058 in neurons of the primate brain: evidence for the site of action of progestins on behavior.

The location of neurons that concentrate progestin in the brains of female cynomolgus monkeys was mapped by autoradiography using the specific synthetic progestin receptor ligand 3H-ORG 2058. Three females were ovariectomized and treated with estrogen (20 micrograms estradiol benzoate daily for 7 days), and one of them was also pretreated with progesterone. Each received an i.v. injection of 1 mCi 3H-ORG 2058 and was killed 1 hour later. Thaw-mount autoradiograms revealed intense accumulation of radioactivity in the nuclei of many neurons in the mediobasal hypothalamus, particularly in the ven

Variability in neuron densities across the cortical sheet in primates.

The function of any area of the brain is a product of its unique population of neurons and nonneurons and their local and long-range connectional architecture. At the present time, we have inadequate data about numbers of neurons and the distribution patterns of neurons in the cortex and other parts of the brain. Numbers and densities of neurons and nonneurons provide the foundation for the assembly of a cortical and whole-brain neuronal network, yet the majority of studies reporting neuron densities for the primate cortex estimate the number of neurons in the cortex as a whole or in specific

Nests, tree holes, and the evolution of primate life histories.

In contrast to the majority of primates, many prosimians, some New World monkeys, and the great apes rest in tree holes or self-constructed nests during their inactive periods. The goal of this comparative study was to examine possible functions of this interspecific variation. Information on resting behavior, maternal behavior, and basic life-history traits was gleaned from the literature and mapped onto a phylogenetic tree of primates for various comparative tests. Parsimony-based reconstructions revealed that only the use of nests or tree holes as shelters for young infants can be unequivoc
