Robustness of Physiological Synchrony in Wearable Electrodermal Activity and Heart Rate as a Measure of Attentional Engagement to Movie Clips.

Individuals that pay attention to narrative stimuli show synchronized heart rate (HR) and electrodermal activity (EDA) responses. The degree to which this physiological synchrony occurs is related to attentional engagement. Factors that can influence attention, such as instructions, salience of the narrative stimulus and characteristics of the individual, affect physiological synchrony. The demonstrability of synchrony depends on the amount of data used in the analysis. We investigated how demonstrability of physiological synchrony varies with varying group size and stimulus duration. Thirty p

Deviations in continuously monitored electrodermal activity before severe clinical complications: a clinical prospective observational explorative cohort study.

Monitoring of high-risk patients in hospital wards is crucial in identifying and preventing clinical deterioration. Sympathetic nervous system activity measured continuously and non-invasively by Electrodermal activity (EDA) may relate to complications, but the clinical use remains untested. The aim of this study was to explore associations between deviations of EDA and subsequent serious adverse events (SAE). Patients admitted to general wards after major abdominal cancer surgery or with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were continuously EDA-monitored for up to 5 da

SUDOSCAN, an Innovative, Simple and Non-Invasive Medical Device for Assessing Sudomotor Function.

Diabetic autonomic neuropathy is probably the most undiagnosed but serious complication of diabetes. The main objectives were to assess the prevalence of peripheral and autonomic neuropathy in a population of diabetic patients, analyze it in a real-life outpatient unit scenario and determine the feasibility of performing SUDOSCAN tests together with widely used tests for neuropathy. A total of 33 patients were included in the study. Different scoring systems (the Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score-TCNS; the Neuropathy Disability Score-NDS; and the Neuropathy Symptom Score-NSS) were applied to r

The role of intolerance of uncertainty in classical threat conditioning: Recent developments and directions for future research.

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), the tendency to find uncertainty aversive, is an important transdiagnostic dimension in mental health disorders. Over the last decade, there has been a surge of research on the role of IU in classical threat conditioning procedures, which serve as analogues to the development, treatment, and relapse of anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and trauma- and stressor-related disorders. This review provides an overview of the existing literature on IU in classical threat conditioning procedures. The review integrates findings based on the shared or discrete parameters of

The Validity of Skin Conductance For Assessing Acute Pain in Infants: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Measuring pain in infants is important but challenging, as there is no "gold standard." The measurement of skin conductance (SC) is considered to be a measure of stress and as a surrogate indicator of pain. The objectives of this study were to identify the extent of research conducted and to synthesize the validity evidence of SC for assessing acute pain in infants. METHODS: The Arksey and O'Malley framework for scoping reviews was followed, and 9 electronic databases were searched. Data were analyzed thematically and presented descriptively including the following main categories

Momentary physiological indices related to eating disorders: A systematic and methodological review.

Eating disorders (ED) are serious psychiatric illnesses, with no everyday support to intervene on the high rates of relapse. Understanding physiological indices that can be measured by wearable sensor technologies may provide new momentary interventions for individuals with ED. This systematic review, searching large databases, synthesises studies investigating peripheral physiological (PP) indices commonly included in wearable wristbands (heart rate [HR], heart rate variability [HRV], electrodermal activity [EDA], peripheral skin temperature [PST], and acceleration) in ED. Inclusion criteria

Motor neuron diseases are not exclusively motor; the SSR paradigm.

Motor Neuron Diseases (MNDs), familial and sporadic, are progressive neurodegenerative disorders that, for an extended period in the past, were considered purely motor disorders. During the course of the disease, however, some patients exhibit concomitant non-motor signs; thus, MNDs are currently perceived as multisystem disorders. Assessment of non-motor symptoms is usually performed clinically, although laboratory tests can also be routinely used to objectively evaluate these symptoms. Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR) is an example of a neurophysiological test that has been used in cases of A

Fear in the mind's eye: the neural correlates of differential fear acquisition to imagined conditioned stimuli.

Mental imagery is involved in both the expression and treatment of fear-related disorders such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, the neural correlates associated with the acquisition and generalization of differential fear conditioning to imagined conditioned stimuli are relatively unknown. In this study, healthy human participants (n = 27) acquired differential fear conditioning to imagined conditioned stimuli paired with a physical unconditioned stimulus (i.e. mild shock), as measured via self-reported fear, the skin conductance response and significant right anterior i

Electrodermal activity spectral and nonlinear analysis - potential biomarkers for sympathetic dysregulation in autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disease characterized by emotional and social deficits, which can be associated with sympathetic dysregulation. Thus, we aimed to analyze the electrodermal activity (EDA) using time, and novel spectral and nonlinear indices in ASD. The cohort consisted of 45 ASD boys and 45 age-matched controls. EDA was continuously recorded at rest. The EDA indices were evaluated by time-, spectral-, and nonlinear-domain analysis. Our results revealed increased non-specific skin conductance responses, spectral parameters in high and very-high frequency ba

Pushing, pulling and manoeuvring an industrial cart: a psychophysiological study.

One of the most frequent manual occupational tasks involves the pushing and pulling of a cart. Although several studies have associated health risks with pushing and pulling, the effects are not clear since occupational tasks have social, cognitive and physical components. The present work investigates a real case of a pushing and pulling occupational task from a manufacturing company. The study initially characterizes the case in accordance with Standard No. ISO 11228-2:2007 as low risk. An experiment with 14 individuals during three modalities of pushing and pulling was performed in order to

Cognitive and electrophysiologic parameters during ascending and descending limbs of the blood alcohol curve.

This study examined the effects of acute alcohol ingestion and prior success or failure upon cognitive performance of 40 healthy, non-alcoholic subjects, during both the ascending and descending limbs of the blood alcohol curve. Measures of physiological arousal were made with frontal/laryngeal electromyographic and skin conductance response level parameters. Major findings were: (1) cognitive performance was impaired by alcohol ingestion; (2) autonomic arousal was significantly greater after alcohol than after placebo; (3) number and amplitude of skin response were greater on the ascending th

Mitochondria-rich cells in anuran amphibia: chloride conductance and regional distribution over the body surface.

The distribution and density (D(mrc)) of mitochondria-rich cells (MR cells) in skin epithelium, were determined over the whole body surface in nine species of anuran Amphibia that live in a variety of habitats. It was found that the more terrestrial species (beginning with Hyla arborea) have a higher density of MR cells in their pelvic region. In the skin of aquatic (Xenopus laevis) or fossorial (Pelobates syriacus) species, D(mrc) is evenly distributed over the whole body surface. In dorsal skin pieces of H. arborea that lack detectable MR cells, transepithelial voltage activation did not ind

Don't Sweat It: Cannabinoid CB1 Receptors Reduce Sweating in a Mouse Model.

Numerous exocrine glands play key physiological roles in the body that include tearing, salivation, and lactation, as well as the control of body temperature via sweating. Malfunction of sweat glands can be deeply problematic or-in the case of anhidrosis-life-threatening. The prevalence of sweating disorders is high, affecting millions. The few available therapies are generally of limited effectiveness. Several lines of evidence point to regulation of sweating by the cannabinoid signaling system, an arrangement that would mirror cannabinoid regulation of tearing and salivation. Mice sweat in t

Monitoring of PCO2 by skin surface sensors.

The methodology of cutaneous PCO2 measurement and the results of the first clinical studies performed with a newly developed sensor are reported. The in vitro data of the sensor are: sensitivity 55 mV/decade; response time tau 90% = 50 s; drift less than 10% per 24 h; no measurable interference by oxygen and anesthetic gases. At a sensor temperature of 44 degrees C, the correlation between arterial PCO2 and cutaneous PCO2 is significant, with correlation coefficients above 0.95 both in case of neonates and adult patients. The cutaneous PCO2 is, however, consistently higher than arterial PCO2,

Acute physiologic and chronic histologic changes in rats and mice exposed to the unique hallucinogen salvinorin A.

Salvinorin A is a unique hallucinogen that is seeing increased use in humans. It is not currently a controlled substance and is used as a legal alternative to controlled substances. Usually smoked or buccally absorbed by chewing, doses of approximately 200 mcg can produce profound hallucinogenic effects of short duration. The mechanism of action of salvinorin A is at the kappa-opioid receptor. Little data is available on the medical effects of this substance so animal studies were undertaken to explore the acute toxic effects of this substance in rats and the chronic effects in mice. Rats were

Electrophysiological study of a case of diffuse loss of sweating with segmental hyperhidrosis associated with areflexia.

Electrophysiological investigations were carried out on a 43 year-old man with segmental hyperhidrosis in three radicular territories, generalized anhidrosis elsewhere and areflexia. A recurrent labial herpetic rash and a history of sweating disorders in his grandfather were the only associated clinical data. Sympathetic skin response was found to be absent in anhidrotic territories, including the hands and feet, although it was present in hyperhidrotic territories. Peripheral adrenergic sympathetic fibers evaluated by photoplethysmography were normally responsive, as were visceral vegetative
