Trypanosome infections in warthogs (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) in the Gambia.

The prevalence of trypanosome infections in warthogs (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) in The Gambia was found to be 11% of a sample of 62 animals. All isolates were identified as Trypanosoma simiae. Serological evidence indicated a higher level of exposure to T. simiae, but results were inconclusive for the presence of Trypanosoma congolense. The course of T. simiae infection in warthog piglets showed a rapidly rising parasitaemia, with a concomitant fall in packed cell volume, and resulted in a prolonged period of low-level parasitaemia. The same infections killed domestic piglets.

Risk factors for HIV-2 infection in The Gambia.

A serosurvey was carried out to assess the prevalence of HIV infection in The Gambia and the importance of possible risk factors. The overall prevalence of HIV-2 infection among the 4228 adults studied was 1.7% while that of HIV-1 was 0.1%. The prevalence of HIV-2 was similar in both sexes but higher among those greater than 25 years of age and those who lived in two small towns along a main transport route. Among men, multivariate analysis showed prevalence of HIV-2 infection was significantly greater among those in the more affluent occupations, those without a secondary education and those

Permethrin-treated bed nets do not have a 'mass-killing effect' on village populations of Anopheles gambiae s.l. in The Gambia.

In The Gambia, the use of permethrin-treated bed nets has led to a reduction in morbidity and mortality from malaria in children. However, no clear evidence has been found for a 'mass-killing effect' on the mosquito vectors as a result of this intervention. Two further entomological studies to investigate this phenomenon have been carried out. In one study, 20 villages were paired so that bed nets in one member of each pair were treated with permethrin. In the other, a cross-over design was used in which treated and untreated bed nets were exchanged between 2 villages. Longevity, biting rate a

Experimental Transmission of Plasmodium malariae to Anopheles gambiae.

Our current knowledge of the clinical burden, biology, and transmission of Plasmodium malariae is extremely scarce. To start addressing some of those questions, we experimentally infected Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes with fresh P. malariae isolates obtained from asymptomatic individuals in Lambaréné, Gabon. The proportion of mosquitoes infected via direct membrane feeding assay with either P. malariae monoinfections (16% [19 of 121]) or coinfections (28% [31 of 112]) was higher after serum replacement than in parallel groups without serum replacement (4% [4 of 102] and 4% [2 of 45], respective

Viral paratransgenesis in the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae.

Paratransgenesis, the genetic manipulation of insect symbiotic microorganisms, is being considered as a potential method to control vector-borne diseases such as malaria. The feasibility of paratransgenic malaria control has been hampered by the lack of candidate symbiotic microorganisms for the major vector Anopheles gambiae. In other systems, densonucleosis viruses (DNVs) are attractive agents for viral paratransgenesis because they infect important vector insects, can be genetically manipulated and are transmitted to subsequent generations. However, An. gambiae has been shown to be refracto

Reproductive physiology of Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles atroparvus.

When exposed to a human host, Anopheles gambiae started probing 4 h post-eclosion, but 95% successfully blood-fed by 16-20 h with maximal blood volumes of 5- 10 microl per female. When fed sugar, the 95% feeding was not observed until 36-40 h post-eclosion; sugar meals appeared to interfere with blood meals. Similarly in An. atroparvus, maximum volumes were 10 microl when starved but only 6 microl when fed sugar. This species did not bite before 2 d, and 95% biting was by 4 d. Given single blood meals to water-kept An. gambiae, a threshold body size for oogenesis was detected. With wing length

Trial of the Trachoma Rapid Assessment methodology in The Gambia.

PURPOSE: To test the validity and repeatability of a newly designed Trachoma Rapid Assessment (TRA) methodology. METHOD: Results from an initial TRA in 20 villages (TRA1) are compared with those of a second validation TRA (TRA2) after 6 weeks in 13 villages, randomly selected out of the original 20, conducted by different field staff. Findings of TRA1 and TRA2 are compared with those of a door-to-door survey of the entire population of all 13 villages. RESULTS: There is a considerable amount of variation between the results of TRA1 and TRA2 and between the results of both TRA's and the door-

Prevalence of anaplasmosis and babesiosis in N'Dama cattle of the Gambia.

Sera from 184 N'Dama cattle randomly selected and averaging 2-7 years of age were tested for the presence of specific antibodies to Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis and B. bigemina, using one or more serological tests including complement fixation, rapid card agglutination and indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA). Tests for A. marginale and B. bovis were essentially negative. Utilising the IFA test 65% of the sera tested were positive for B. bigemina. Three randomly selected two-year-old N'Dama bulls were splenectomised. All three showed an acute recurrence of a B. bigemina parasitaemia. Two

The development of an international partnership for cranial neurosurgery in The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: There is a considerable burden of pituitary and other skull base diseases in low-and-middle-income countries that often go unaddressed. In this study, we describe the development of an institutional partnership between Mass General Brigham (MGB) and the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH; The Gambia) to develop the capacity to perform complex cranial neurosurgery with a focus on pituitary surgery. METHODS: This is a case series of 5 operations performed at EFSTH from September 17-19, 2024. RESULTS: 5 operations were performed, including 3 for pituitary macroadenoma, 1

Ecophysiology of Anopheles gambiae s.l.: persistence in the Sahel.

The dry-season biology of malaria vectors is poorly understood, especially in arid environments when no surface waters are available for several months, such as during the dry season in the Sahel. Here we reappraise results on the dry-season physiology of members of the Anopheles gambiae s.l. complex in the broad context of dormancy in insects and especially in mosquitoes. We examine evidence on seasonal changes in reproduction, metabolism, stress tolerance, nutrition, molecular regulation, and environmental conditions and determine if the current results are compatible with dry-season diapaus

Porcine cysticercosis and risk factors in the gambia and senegal.

During a stratified cross-sectional survey, 1705 pigs were sampled from 279 randomly selected households, 63 randomly selected communities and villages, from four study areas in The Gambia and Senegal during the period October 2007 to January 2008. Porcine cysticercosis prevalence detected by tongue inspection at animal level per study area ranged from 0.1% to 1.0%. Using an antigen-detection ELISA the seroprevalence of cysticercosis at both community/village and animal levels for the four selected study areas is: Western region 80.0% (95%CI: 52.4%-93.6%) and 4.8% (95%CI: 3.4%-6.5%), Bignona 8

Effect of passive zooprophylaxis on malaria transmission in The Gambia.

The effect of zooprophylaxis on malaria transmission has not been studied on the African continent despite that the World Health Organization has recommended this intervention method since 1982. The effect of passive zooprophylaxis on malaria vector abundance, mosquito feeding preferences, and infectivity was studied in an area of moderate seasonal transmission in The Gambia. A paired cohort of 204 children <7 yr of age was selected and matched in groups for presence or absence of cattle (Bos taurus) within 20 m of their bedroom. Comparisons were made between mosquitoes collected from the bedr

Prognosis of clinical pneumonia in undernourished children in rural Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition significantly increases the risk of severe infections and mortality in children under five, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Pneumonia, a leading cause of childhood death, is especially dangerous in undernourished children, yet prognostic measures to identify those at highest risk are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To identify algorithms of poor prognosis in undernourished children with clinical pneumonia for early identification of children at risk for poor outcomes. METHODS: This study analyzed a subset of children enrolled in a cohort designed to identify bi

Timing of the Infancy-Childhood Growth Transition in Rural Gambia.

The Karlberg model of human growth describes the infancy, childhood, and puberty (ICP) stages as continuous and overlapping, and defined by transitions driven by sequential additional effects of several endocrine factors that shape the growth trajectory and resultant adult size. Previous research has suggested that a delayed transition from the infancy to the childhood growth stage contributes to sub-optimal growth outcomes. A new method developed to analyze the structure of centile crossing in early life has emerged as a potential tool for identifying the infancy-childhood transition (ICT), t
