Theta-Beta/Gamma Coupling Identifies Bothersome Tinnitus Induced by Thalamocortical Dysrhythmia.

BACKGROUND: The phantom sound of tinnitus can be an extremely debilitating condition. The thalamocortical dysrhythmia (TCD) hypothesis is a feature of subjective tinnitus; however, its consistency in characterizing different types of tinnitus remains unclear. METHOD: We compared theta-beta/gamma coupling in multichannel EEG recordings from subjects with bothersome tinnitus (BT), non-bothersome tinnitus (NBT), and healthy controls (HC). Additionally, we used these EEG features to distinguish BT from NBT by employing the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) model. RESULTS: Theta-beta/gamma phase-amplitude

Daily Dynamics of Resting-State Electroencephalographic Theta and Gamma Fluctuations Are Associated With Cognitive Performance in Healthy Aging.

OBJECTIVES: Healthy age-related cognitive changes are highly heterogeneous across individuals. This variability is increasingly explained through the lens of spontaneous fluctuations of brain activity, now considered a powerful index of age-related changes. However, brain activity is a biological process modulated by circadian rhythms, and how these fluctuations evolve throughout the day is under investigation. METHODS: We analyzed data from 101 healthy late middle-aged participants from the Cognitive Fitness in Aging study (68 women and 33 men; aged 50-69 years). Participants completed 5 ele

Associations between Rest-Activity Rhythms and Liver Function Tests: The US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2011-2014.

Liver functions are regulated by the circadian rhythm; however, whether a weakened circadian rhythm is associated with impaired liver function is unclear. This study aims to investigate the association of characteristics of rest-activity rhythms with abnormal levels of biomarkers of liver function. Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014. Seven rest-activity rhythm parameters were derived from 24 h actigraphy data using the extended cosine model and non-parametric methods. Multiple logistic regression and multiple linear regression models were use

Altered cortical functional network during behavioral inhibition in individuals with childhood trauma.

Individuals who have prior history of childhood traumatic experiences are at a high risk for a variety of psychological and behavioral problems throughout their lifetime. This study aimed to investigate whether such individuals exhibit altered cortical functional networks during a behavioral inhibition task. One hundred fifty-three non-clinical individuals were recruited and instructed to perform a Go/NoGo task during an electroencephalograph. Source-level weighted functional networks based on the graph theory were analyzed for NoGo-P3 processing. Based on their total scores on the childhood t

Cross-frequency coupling between slow harmonics via the real brainstem oscillators: An in vivo animal study.

Brain waves of discrete rhythms (gamma to delta frequency ranges) are ubiquitously recorded and interpreted with respect to probable corresponding specific functions. The most challenging idea of interpreting varied frequencies of brain waves has been postulated as a communication mechanism in which different neuronal assemblies use specific ranges of frequencies cooperatively. One promising candidate is cross-frequency coupling (CFC), in which some neuronal assemblies efficiently utilize the fastest gamma range brain waves as an information carrier (phase-amplitude CFC); however, phase-phase

Gamma low field magnetic stimulation ameliorates pathophysiological damage and cognitive impairments in AD mice.

BACKGROUND: The normal functioning of gamma rhythms is crucial for maintaining brain health, while their abnormalities are closely associated with various neurological disorders, particularly Alzheimer's disease. Gamma stimulation modalities including auditory, visual, electrical, and strong magnetic approaches have all demonstrated potential therapeutic effects for AD, with substantial research findings continuously emerging. However, 40 Hz gamma low field magnetic stimulation(gamma-LFMS) remains unexplored. METHODS: To investigate this question, we applied pulsed magnetic fields with a magn

Recognition memory and theta-gamma interactions in the hippocampus.

Neuronal oscillations and cross-frequency interactions in the rat hippocampus relate in important ways to memory processes and serve as a model for studying oscillatory activity in cognition more broadly. We report here that hippocampal synchrony (CA3-CA1 coherence) increased markedly in the low gamma range as rats were exploring novel objects, particularly those for which the rat subsequently showed good memory. The gamma synchrony varied across phases of the theta rhythm such that coherence was highest at the falling slope and trough of the theta wave. Further, the shape of the theta wave wa

Investigating the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation on primary somatosensory cortex.

Near-threshold tactile stimuli perception and somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) are encoded in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and largely depend on alpha and beta S1 rhythm. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive neurophysiological technique that allows cortical rhythm modulation. We investigated the effects of tACS delivered over S1 at alpha, beta, and gamma frequencies on near-threshold tactile stimuli perception and STDT, as well as phase-dependent tACS effects on near-threshold tactile stimuli perception in healthy subjects. Level of participation in robotic-assisted treadmill walking modulates midline sensorimotor EEG rhythms in able-bodied subjects.

In robot assisted gait training, a pattern of human locomotion is executed repetitively with the intention to restore the motor programs associated with walking. Several studies showed that active contribution to the movement is critical for the encoding of motor memory. We propose to use brain monitoring techniques during gait training to encourage active participation in the movement. We investigated the spectral patterns in the electroencephalogram (EEG) that are related to active and passive robot assisted gait. Fourteen healthy participants were considered. Is 'gamma' (40 Hz) synchronous activity disturbed in patients with traumatic brain injury?

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this work is to determine whether Gamma (40 Hz) synchronous activity has disturbed patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Using a conventional auditory oddball paradigm, the extent of Gamma synchrony across multiple scalp sites in specific frequency bands as a function of time was examined in 15 patients with severe TBI and 15 age- and sex-matched controls. Averaged Gamma synchrony was analyzed using within and between group multiple analyses of variance with region (left versus right hemisphere, anterior versus posterior region) as the within

Pallidal thermolesion unleashes gamma oscillations in the motor cortex in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: In Parkinson's disease, the emergence of motor dysfunction is thought to be related to an imbalance between "antikinetic" and "prokinetic" patterns of oscillatory activity in the motor network. Invasive recordings from the basal ganglia and cortex in surgical patients have suggested that levodopa and therapeutic deep brain stimulation can suppress antikinetic beta band (13-30 Hz) rhythms while promoting prokinetic gamma band (60-90 Hz) rhythms. Surgical ablation of the globus pallidus internus is one of the oldest effective therapies for Parkinson's disease and produces remarkably

Gamma tACS over the temporal lobe increases the occurrence of Eureka! moments.

The solution to a problem might manifest itself as a burst of unexpected, unpredictable clarity. Such Eureka! events, or Insight moments, are among the most fascinating mysteries of human cognition, whose neurophysiological substrate seems to include a role for oscillatory activity within the α and γ bands in the right parietal and temporal brain regions. We tested this hypothesis on thirty-one healthy participants using transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) to externally amplify α (10 Hz) and γ (40 Hz) activity in the right parietal and temporal lobes, respectively. During γ-tAC

Beta and gamma synchronous oscillations in neural network activity in mice-induced by food deprivation.

Food deprivation is known to trigger hunger sensation and motivation to eat for energy replenishing. However, brain mechanisms associated with hunger and neural circuitries that mediate hunger driven responses remained to be investigated. To understand neural signaling of hunger, local field potentials (LFPs) in the lateral hypothalamus (LHa), nucleus accumbens (NAc), dorsal hippocampus (HP) and olfactory bulb (OB) and their interconnectivities were studied in freely moving adult male Albino mice during 18-20 h food deprivation and fed periods. Raw LFP signals were recorded and analyzed for me

Network-wide oscillations in the parkinsonian state: alterations in neuronal activities occur in the premotor cortex in parkinsonian nonhuman primates.

A number of studies suggest that Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with alterations of neuronal activity patterns in the basal-ganglia-thalamocortical circuit. There are limited electrophysiological data, however, describing how the premotor cortex, which is involved in movement and decision-making, is likely impacted in PD. In this study, spontaneous local field potential (LFP) and single unit neuronal activity were recorded in the dorsal premotor area of nonhuman primates in both the naïve and parkinsonian state using the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) model of park

EEG Alpha and Gamma Modulators Mediate Motion Sickness-Related Spectral Responses.

Motion sickness (MS) is a common experience of travelers. To provide insights into brain dynamics associated with MS, this study recruited 19 subjects to participate in an electroencephalogram (EEG) experiment in a virtual-reality driving environment. When riding on consecutive winding roads, subjects experienced postural instability and sensory conflict between visual and vestibular stimuli. Meanwhile, subjects rated their level of MS on a six-point scale. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to separate the filtered EEG signals into maximally temporally independent components (ICs).

Wearable transparent OLED glasses for cognitive stimulation: Enhancing brain connectivity through gamma entrainment.

Gamma wave entrainment is a promising approach for improving cognitive function, particularly in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. However, for everyday treatment, a light source system that maintains visibility while delivering effective stimulation is essential for patient comfort and practicality. To address this need, we developed organic light-emitting diode (OLED) glasses with optimized large-area transparent OLEDs for gamma wave entrainment. The optimization involved all layers of the device, including encapsulation, to achieve high luminous transmittance (75%), uniformity (over

Ictal epileptiform activity is facilitated by hippocampal GABAA receptor-mediated oscillations.

The cellular and network mechanisms of the transition of brief interictal discharges to prolonged seizures are a crucial issue in epilepsy. Here we used hippocampal slices exposed to ACSF containing 0 Mg(2+) to explore mechanisms for the transition to prolonged (3-42 sec) seizure-like ("ictal") discharges. Epileptiform activity, evoked by Shaffer collateral stimulation, triggered prolonged bursts in CA1, in 50-60% of slices, from both adult and young (postnatal day 13-21) rats. In these cases the first component of the CA1 epileptiform burst was followed by a train of population spikes at freq

Arousal effects on oscillatory dynamics in the non-human primate brain.

Arousal states are thought to influence many aspects of cognition and behavior by broadly modulating neural activity. Many studies have observed arousal-related modulations of alpha (~8 to 15 Hz) and gamma (~30 to 50 Hz) power and coherence in local field potentials across relatively small groups of brain regions. However, the global pattern of arousal-related oscillatory modulation in local field potentials is yet to be fully elucidated. We simultaneously recorded local field potentials in numerous cortical and subcortical regions in the primate brain and assessed oscillatory activity and int

Surge of neurophysiological coupling and connectivity of gamma oscillations in the dying human brain.

The brain is assumed to be hypoactive during cardiac arrest. However, animal models of cardiac and respiratory arrest demonstrate a surge of gamma oscillations and functional connectivity. To investigate whether these preclinical findings translate to humans, we analyzed electroencephalogram and electrocardiogram signals in four comatose dying patients before and after the withdrawal of ventilatory support. Two of the four patients exhibited a rapid and marked surge of gamma power, surge of cross-frequency coupling of gamma waves with slower oscillations, and increased interhemispheric functio

Oscillatory Neural Signatures of Visual Perception Across Developmental Stages in Individuals With 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Numerous behavioral studies have highlighted the contribution of visual perceptual deficits to the nonverbal cognitive profile of individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. However, the neurobiological processes underlying these widespread behavioral alterations are yet to be fully understood. Thus, in this paper, we investigated the role of neural oscillations toward visuoperceptual deficits to elucidate the neurobiology of sensory impairments in deletion carriers. METHODS: We acquired 125 high-density electroencephalography recordings during a visual grating task in a group of
