The origin of sensory nerves that innervate the submandibular salivary gland was investigated in the rat. After application of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase to the cut endings of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve branches at the hilus of the gland, labeled cells were mainly found in the dorsal root ganglia and the trigeminal ganglion, respectively. The labeled neurons in these ganglia were of various sizes compared to unlabeled neurons, suggesting that the sensory nerves of the gland conduct various modalities of sensory information.

Sensory ganglia taken from quail embryos at E4 to E7 were back-transplanted into the vagal neural crest migration pathway (i.e., at the level of somites 1 to 6) of 8- to 10-somite stage chick embryos. Three types of sensory ganglia were used: (i) proximal ganglia of cranial sensory nerves IX and X forming the jugular-superior ganglionic complex, whose neurons and nonneuronal cells both arise from the neural crest; (ii) distal ganglia of the same nerves, i.e., the petrosal and nodose ganglia in which the neurons originate from epibranchial placodes and the nonneuronal cells from the neural cres

BACKGROUND: Autonomic imbalances including parasympathetic withdrawal and sympathetic overactivity are cardinal features of heart failure regardless of etiology; however, mechanisms underlying these imbalances remain unknown. Animal model studies of heart and visceral organ hypertrophy predict that nerve growth factor levels should be elevated in heart failure; whether this is so in human heart failure, though, remains unclear. We tested the hypotheses that neurons in cardiac ganglia are hypertrophied in human, canine, and rat heart failure and that nerve growth factor, which we hypothesize is

In the present study we investigated, through immunohistochemistry, the presence and location of neurotensin receptor 1 (NTR1) in the peripheral ganglia and carotid body of 16 humans and 5 rats. In both humans and rats, NTR1 immunostained ganglion cells were found in superior cervical ganglia (57.4+/-11.6% and 72.4+/-11.4%, respectively, p0.05), enteric ganglia (51.9+/-10.4% and 64.6+/-6.1, p<0.05), sensory ganglia (69.2+/-10.7% and 73.0+/-13.1%, p>0.05) and parasympathetic ganglia (52.1+/-14.1% and 59.4+/-14.0%, p>0.05), supporting a modulatory role for NT in these ganglia. Positivity was als

The human otic ganglion (OG) is not readily accessible during ordinary anatomical teaching courses because of insufficient time and severe difficulties encountered in dissection. Accordingly, most anatomical descriptions of its location, relation to neighbouring structures, size and shape are supported only by drawings, but not by photographs. The aim of this study has been to present the OG with associated roots and branches in dissected anatomic specimens. Following cumbersome dissection and precise photo-documentation, a detailed analysis of location, syntopy and morphology was performed. W

A kinship between cranial and pelvic visceral nerves of vertebrates has been accepted for a century. Accordingly, sacral preganglionic neurons are considered parasympathetic, as are their targets in the pelvic ganglia that prominently control rectal, bladder, and genital functions. Here, we uncover 15 phenotypic and ontogenetic features that distinguish pre- and postganglionic neurons of the cranial parasympathetic outflow from those of the thoracolumbar sympathetic outflow in mice. By every single one, the sacral outflow is indistinguishable from the thoracolumbar outflow. Thus, the parasympa

Angiotensin II acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter of the sympathetic ganglia. In the parasympathetic neurons, however, angiotensin II (angio II)-induced responses have not been recorded. In this study, we investigated the effects of angio II in the hamster submandibular ganglion (SMG) neurons using a intracellular recording technique. Approximately 70% of these ganglion cells responded with persistent depolarization (3-6 mV, 5-9 min) at a concentration of 10 microM. The angio II-induced depolarizations were caused by the combination of an increase in Na+ conductance and a decrease in K+ co

Parasympathetic innervation is critical for submandibular gland (SMG) development and regeneration. Parasympathetic ganglia (PSG) are derived from Schwann cell precursors that migrate along nerves, differentiate into neurons, and coalesce within their target tissue to form ganglia. However, signals that initiate gangliogenesis after the precursors differentiate into neurons are unknown. We found that deleting negative regulators of FGF signaling, Sprouty1 and Sprouty2 (Spry1/2DKO), resulted in a striking loss of gangliogenesis, innervation, and keratin 5-positive (K5+) epithelial progenitors i

Autonomic dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) has been recognized since the original description by James Parkinson in 1817. Autonomic failure can be the clinical presentation of other diseases like pure autonomic failure (PAF) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Both the central and peripheral autonomic nervous systems can be affected in PD. Rajput and Rozdilsky described cell loss and Lewy bodies within the sympathetic ganglia and antibodies to sympathetic neurons have been detected in PD patients. Lewy bodies can be seen in autonomic regulatory regions, including the hypoth

Female mice have been used extensively to study mucosal immunity against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection of the vagina, but comparatively little is known about the spread of this virus to other tissues. Here the authors have used immunolabeling to demonstrate that HSV-2 infected the vaginal epithelium; the epithelium covering the vulva, perineum, and anal canal; and perineal hair follicles and sebaceous glands. The kinetics and basal localization of the immunolabeling indicated that the virus spread horizontally within the epithelial layer, starting in the vagina and then proceed

Retrograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) was used to study the localisation of neurons that innervate the lacrimal gland of the cynomolgous monkey. WGA-HRP-labelled neurons were localised in the ipsilateral trigeminal, superior cervical and ciliary ganglia and in the ipsilateral and contralateral pterygopalatine ganglia. In the trigeminal ganglion WGA-HRP-labelled somata were found in the ophthalmic part (18%) and the maxillary part (5%). Identification of labelled neurons in the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia indicates a dual parasympathetic innverva

According to clinical guidelines a symptomatic atrioventricular block (AV block) is treated with a pacemaker. For young individuals such a therapy can be difficult due to possible long term complications such as infections, lead disruptions and pacemaker induced cardiomyopathy. We describe a twenty year old man with recurrent syncopes due to intermittent parasympathetic caused AV block of grade 2. The patient underwent cardioneuroablation where parasympathetic ganglia in the right atrium were ablated. After the procedure the PR interval normalized. This procedure has never been performed in Ic

The sphenopalatine (pterygopalatine) ganglion (SPG) is the most superficial ganglia to manipulate from the oral cavity. It has parasympathetic and sensory fibers directly affecting the paranasal sinuses as well as the palatine, nasal, pharyngeal, and lacrimal glands. The SPG can be manipulated intraorally by students and physicians utilizing osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to relieve congestion associated with sinusitis, allergies, headaches, and upper respiratory infections. Within osteopathic medical education programs, students have anecdotally had difficulty identifying this gangl

The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) has been assumed to be involved in the genesis of several types of facial pain, including Sluder's neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, persistent idiopathic facial pain, cluster headache, and atypical facial pain. The gold standard treatments for SPG-related pain are percutaneous procedures performed with the aid of fluoroscopy or CT. In this technical note the authors present, for the first time, an SPG approach using the aid of a neuronavigator.

Ciliary neurones were identified electrophysiologically in isolated ganglia and the projection of individual axons to the intrinsic muscles of the eye determined by labelling identified cells with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The ciliary ganglion of the adult mouse contains 80-100 parasympathetic neurones clustered at the point where the oculomotor nerve branches to supply the medial and inferior rectus. These nerve cells show varying degrees of dendritic complexity (zero to six primary dendrites) and differing degrees of innervation by preganglionic axons (one to seven inputs). Cells with mo

A time course study with enkephalin (Enk)-like immunoreactivity has revealed that nerve fibers intensely immunoreactive for Enk-8 appeared transiently only during the postnatal week 2 and 4 within the acini as well as in the inter- and intralobular connective tissues of the submandibular gland of rats. At these stages numerous nerve fibers immunoreactive for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) appeared also in the inter- and intralobular connective tissues and within the acini. Coincidently with these postnatal stages, abundant Enk-immunoreactive principal ganglion cells appeared in the superior cervica

The distribution of nicotinic receptors in the brain and ganglia of the Cynomolgus monkey was studied by in situ hybridization and receptor autoradiography. A 35S-labeled antisense riboprobe for the mRNA of the alpha 3 subunit of the human nicotinic receptor, [3H]L-nicotine and [125]alpha-bungarotoxin were used as markers. The highest levels of alpha 3-mRNA were observed in the hippocampus, the medial habenula, the lateral geniculate, the granular layer of the cerebellum, as well as in the pineal gland; moderate levels were found in other nuclei of the thalamus and in the deeper layers of the
