Intramuscular Ganglion Cyst of the Extensor Digitorum Longus.

BACKGROUND: Ganglion cyst is a mucin-filled synovial cyst. It is the most common mass found in the wrist and hand. However, it is less commonly encountered in the lower extremity and even rarer to be found intramuscularly. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old female presented for a symptomatic mass at the anterolateral left knee. Radiography revealed an intramuscular multiseptated cystic lesion within the extensor digitorum longus muscle. No definite solid components or enhancement of the lesion and no intra-articular extension or capsular communication were observed. Differential diagnosis inclu

Wrist ganglion cyst enveloping radial artery.

Wrist ganglion cysts typically do not show noticeable symptoms but can affect aesthetics and even compress adjacent blood vessels and nerves. Compression therapy can eliminate cysts. However, caution is needed when treating cysts around the radial artery. This study examined a rare case of a wrist ganglion cyst that, after repeated compression and recurrence, enveloped the radial artery. This not only caused wrist swelling and pain but also increased the difficulty and risk of surgical treatment.

Ganglion Cyst on 131I Whole-Body Scintigraphy.

Interpretation of iodine I whole-body scintigraphy can be challenging, as there are many nonpathologic findings that may present with increased radiotracer uptake. Radiotracer uptake has been reported in the literature involving the salivary glands, thymus, renal cysts, skin contamination, and other benign etiologies. We present the case of an incidental right wrist ganglion cyst demonstrating persistent increased uptake on I whole-body scintigraphy.

Intraneural ganglion cyst on the external popliteal nerve.

There are many causes for the paralysis of the external sciatic popliteal nerve , such as the intraneural ganglion cyst. In this case, we evaluate a 52-year-old woman with no relevant personal record, who was admitted with paresis of the right foot of 4 months of evolution associated with alterations in the sensitivity that rose up to the posterolateral region of the leg. The diagnosis was based on MR and cyst decompression and disconnection of the articular branch. Given the low incidence of these lesions, their origin is still subject to controversy. The most widely accepted theory is the un

Ganglion cyst of the cruciate ligament with atlantoaxial subluxation.

BACKGROUND: Ganglion cysts of the cruciate ligament are rare and sometimes asymptomatic. The authors present three cases of ganglion cysts of the cruciate ligament with atlantoaxial subluxation, which has rarely been reported previously. METHODS: Generally, ganglion cysts of the cruciate ligament are reported as case reports. Several theories regarding the process of cyst formation and the development of treatment options have been described. However, trans-oral decompression with total removal of the cyst may be one of the options for treatment of this kind of disease. RESULTS: A retrospect

Extraneural ganglion cyst causing foot drop.

Ganglion cysts around the knee are uncommon and rarely cause compressive neuropathy of the common peroneal nerve. When present, they may result in foot drop and sensory disturbances, making early recognition crucial. We report a male in his late 50s presenting with a swelling over the lateral aspect of the right proximal lower leg, progressive weakness of ankle dorsiflexion and sensory loss over the dorsum of the foot. Examination revealed a firm, fluctuant swelling posterolateral to the fibular neck. Ultrasound and MRI confirmed a multiloculated cystic lesion compressing the common peroneal n

Lumbar Spine Ganglion Cyst: A Case Report.

Ganglion cysts are typically periarticular soft tissue lesions commonly found in the wrist and forearm, with spinal involvement being rare. We present a clinical case of a 54-year-old female with a ganglion cyst at the L3-L4 level, causing radiculopathy symptoms. Despite initial difficulty in diagnosis due to MRI findings, surgical resection confirmed the extradural mass as a ganglion cyst. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with immediate relief of radiculopathy symptoms. Challenges included distinguishing between synovial and ganglion cysts and accurately locating the cyst intraoperative

The sternoclavicular ganglion cyst, a rare pediatric diagnosis.

We briefly describe the case of a 4-year-old girl, referred for imaging of a small, firm, round, skin-colored, subcutaneous nodule that suddenly appeared at her right sternoclavicular junction. A plain radiograph was non-contributory, but ultrasonography revealed a small cystic structure, leading to the diagnosis of a sternoclavicular ganglion cyst. Sternoclavicular ganglion cysts are a rare diagnosis, with only seven reported pediatric cases. A watchful waiting approach can be adopted so long as they remain asymptomatic.

Spinoglenoid Notch Ganglion Cyst: A Case Report.

Suprascapular nerve dysfunction caused by ganglion cysts is a rare condition that can cause significant pain and weakness in the shoulder. The suprascapular nerve is a branch of the brachial plexus that innervates the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles. It is most commonly compressed at the suprascapular notch or the spinoglenoid notch. A 40-year-old male presented with a two-year history of left shoulder pain that was aggravated by overhead activities. Physical examination revealed mild tenderness along the infraspinatus with noticeable atrophy, full range of motion, and mild external ro

Ganglion cyst of temporomandibular joint - A systematic review.

Ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an uncommon pathology with uncertain etiology. There is no consensus on their management. The current systematic review aimed to discuss the clinical and histopathological features of ganglion cysts of TMJ, to aid in appropriate treatment. A literature search was done and a total of 20 cases were retrieved from published databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar. The cyst presented with swelling in all the cases followed by pain (50 %) and trismus (35 %) as other common symptoms. Though CT and MRI proved helpful in determining th

Tubercular Tenosynovitis Mimicking a Large Ganglion Cyst.

INTRODUCTION: Tubercular tenosynovitis of the wrist and hand, although rare, presents a diagnostic dilemma primarily due to its non-specific clinical presentation, insidious course, and the large number of differentials that mimic it. When the diagnosis is late or delayed, significant bone and tendon complications occur. Large progressive swelling around the wrist in TB endemic countries should raise an early suspicion of being of tubercular etiology and should be high on the list of differential diagnoses. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old female presented with a large progressive swelling on the v

Ganglion Cysts as a Cause of Ulnar Neuropathy at the Wrist.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy at the wrist traditionally has depended primarily on clinical and electrodiagnostic findings. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound have emerged as very important diagnostic tools in diagnosis of focal neuropathies. CASE PRESENTATION: We present clinical, electrodiagnostic, and MRI findings in 2 patients with ulnar neuropathies at the wrist caused by ganglion cysts. DISCUSSION: Ulnar neuropathies at the wrist are common, may present with different patterns of motor and sensory deficits, and can be misdiagnosed. Nerve conduction studie

Lumbosacral intraspinal extradural ganglion cyst in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 16-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat was referred for chronic history of reluctance to jump, stiffness of the tail and lower back pain. Mild pelvic limb ataxia, reduced perianal reflex and lumbosacral discomfort were present on neurological examination. On magnetic resonance imaging, a well-defined rounded structure of 3 mm in diameter was identified on the right dorsal aspect of the epidural space at L7-S1, causing displacement of the cauda equina. The lesion was hyperintense to spinal cord parenchyma on T2-weighted images and hypointense on T1-weighted images, c

A ganglion cyst in the second lumbar intervertebral foramen.

Ganglion cysts usually arise from the tendon sheaths and tissues around the joints. It is usually associated with degenerative arthritic changes in older people. Ganglion cyst in the spine is rare and there is no previous report on case that located in the intervertebral foramen and compressed dorsal root ganglion associated severe radiculopathy. A 29-year-old woman presented with severe left thigh pain and dysesthesia for a month. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a dumbbell like mass in the intervertebral foramen between second and third lumbar vertebrae on the left side. The lesion was re

[A case of lumbar ganglion cyst causing radiculopathy].

Ganglion cysts represent a rare pathology mostly encountered in the lumbar region of the spinal column. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a ganglion cyst at the L4-5 level in a 46-year-old woman who had a complaint of long-standing pain in her right leg. The cyst was completely excised following total laminectomy at L4. After surgery, her symptoms and neurological signs completely disappeared.

The volar wrist ganglion: just a simple cyst?

The results of operation on 71 volar wrist ganglia are reported. The recurrence rate was 28%, occurring between 1 and 144 months (median: 5 months). The highest risk of recurrence is in a male patient, under 30 years of age, in a manual occupation, operated on by a junior surgeon. The use of a post-operative plaster slab seemed to be followed by significant wrist stiffness. 28% of the patients had evidence of damage to the palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve. It is suggested that this could be avoided by positive identification of this nerve at operation.
