Effect of cervical sympathetic ganglionectomy on facial nerve reconstruction using polyglycolic acid-collagen tubes.

A polyglycolic acid-collagen (PGA-c) tube was used as an artificial nerve guide during facial nerve reconstruction performed in a canine model of stellate ganglion block (SGB). The model was generated using a cervical sympathetic ganglionectomy. We evaluated the effects of blood flow on nerve regeneration. First, we resected the left cervical sympathetic ganglion in beagles (n=6). We assessed buccal mucosal blood flow and nasal skin temperatures once per week for 12weeks and Horner's sign 2, 4, and 6months after resection. We compared these values to those measured prior to resection. Blood fl

Functional roles of intrinsic neurotrophin-3 in spinal neuroplasticity of cats following partial ganglionectomy.

This study detected the effects of endogenous neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) on the collateral sprouting derived from the L6 dorsal root ganglion (DRG) after unilateral removal of adjacent DRGs (L1–L5 and L7) in cats. Cholera toxin B tracing revealed significant neurite growth from the spared L6 DRG and axonal sprouting in the dorsal column. There was a significant increase in the number of NT-3 and trkC immunopositive neurons as well as in NT-3 protein level in the spared DRG by immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay. NT-3 and its mRNA and trkC were located mainly in large

Opioid-free balanced anesthesia for cervical ganglionectomy subsequent to recent ultra rapid opioid detoxification.

OBJECTIVE: To perform an opioid-free, balanced anesthetic for an Active Duty soldier undergoing cervical ganglionectomy for intractable occipital neuralgia 7 days after ultra rapid opioid detoxification (UROD) under general anesthesia. SETTING: Opioids have been a mainstay for both intraoperative and postoperative analgesia. With the emergence of newer non-opioid analgesics and the practice of the multimodal analgesia, opioid therapy will be complimented and, in some cases, replaced by these newer agents. The increasing knowledge in the literature of both pain mechanisms and chronic pain trea

New stereotactic technique for percutaneous thermocoagulation upper thoracic ganglionectomy in cases of palmar hyperhidrosis.

To perform unilateral or bilateral upper thoracic ganglionectomy, we established a three-dimensional system of coordinates for T2 and T3 ganglia. For this purpose, the spatial relations were represented by drawings obtained from 50 Chinese cadavers. A simple stereotactic frame was constructed as an aid in performing the procedure. Then, according to the established three-dimensional system of coordinates, percutaneous thermocoagulation of both T2 and T3 ganglia was performed on 10 patients (20 sides) with palmar hyperhidrosis, under local anesthesia and fluoroscopic guidance at the posteroante

Changes in calcitonin release during sympathetic nerve degeneration after superior cervical ganglionectomy of rats.

To assess the role of peripheral sympathetic nerves in the regulation of calcitonin release, rats subjected to superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) 16-28 h earlier were used. The time periods selected allowed us to examine C cell response during the supraliminal release of sympathetic transmitter that accompanies anterograde degeneration of nerve varicosities as well as during the neural paralysis that ensues thereafter. At the time intervals examined, SCGx did not result in significant changes of basal serum calcitonin or Ca levels. The intraperitoneal administration of CaCl2 brought about

Acute effects of unilateral pelvic ganglionectomy on urinary bladder function in vivo in the male rat.

Mean and maximal micturition volumes following a standardized water intake were determined before and up to three days after unilateral pelvic ganglionectomy or sham operation in adult male rats. Sham operation did not change the volumes. Unilateral ganglionectomy on the other hand decreased significantly both mean and maximal micturition volumes (and thus increased micturition frequency). The effect was most pronounced 1 day after ganglionectomy, but was still significant after 3 days. Cystometrograms were recorded without and with atropine (1 mg/kg) before operation and 1, 2 or 3 days after

Inhibitory effects of superior cervical ganglionectomy on dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-induced mammary tumors in the rat.

The role of the pineal in regulating the oncogenic processes was explored in Sprague-Dawley female rats by comparing incidence and growth of mammary tumors in animals subjected to superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) or blinding and anosmia (BAs) with that of intact rats treated with 7-12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA). The surgery was performed at the age of 56 days, 1 day following the administration of the carcinogen. Growth of mammary tumors was studied, and 15 weeks later the rats were sacrificed by decapitation and the activity of the pineal hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT)

"Synaptic" ribbons and spherules lacking in the pineal gland of the European hamster appear after ganglionectomy.

"Synaptic" ribbons and spherules are typical organelles of the mammalian pinealocytes, that present quantitative day-night variations parallel to pineal melatonin levels. The European hamster is a wild photoperiodic mammal whose pineal melatonin concentrations do not vary during the 24 hr light-dark cycle. The aim of this study was thus to see if a rhythmic variation in synaptic structures was nevertheless present in this species. It was found that, in contrast to all of the photoperiodic species studied to date, the European hamster pinealocyte contains no ribbons, and virtually no spherules.

Reperfusion Arrhythmias Increase after Superior Cervical Ganglionectomy Due to Conduction Disorders and Changes in Repolarization.

Pharmacological concentrations of melatonin reduce reperfusion arrhythmias, but less is known about the antiarrhythmic protection of the physiological circadian rhythm of melatonin. Bilateral surgical removal of the superior cervical ganglia irreversibly suppresses melatonin rhythmicity. This study aimed to analyze the cardiac electrophysiological effects of the loss of melatonin circadian oscillation and the role played by myocardial melatonin membrane receptors, SERCA2A, TNFα, nitrotyrosine, TGFβ, KATP channels, and connexin 43. Three weeks after bilateral removal of the superior cervical ga

Interleukin-1beta-induced increases of plasma catecholamine levels in rats: enhancement by superior cervical ganglionectomy.

In urethane-anesthetized rats, we examined the effect of bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy on interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta)-induced elevation of plasma catecholamines. In sham-operated rats, intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) administered IL-1beta (100 ng/animal) effectively elevated plasma noradrenaline rather than plasma adrenaline. In superior cervical ganglionectomized rats, however, IL-1beta significantly elevated adrenaline to a greater extent than noradrenaline, and they were attenuated by i.c.v. administration of melatonin (100 ng/animal). Superior cervical ganglionectomy effec

Disappearance of noradrenaline from different parts of the rabbit external ear following superior cervical ganglionectomy.

Following superior cervical ganglionectomy the noradrenaline tissue levels in the base of the rabbit external ear started to decrease after about 12 hours. About 4 hours later noradrenaline started to decrease about simultaneously in the middle piece and the tip. Within 24 hours after ganglionectomy the noradrenaline decreased rapidly in all three pieces. Thereafter the noradrenaline of the base piece was levelling off at about 15% of the normal whereas the noradrenaline in the two other pieces remained at about 40% of the normal. The results indicate that the adrenergic innervation of the ear

Ganglionectomy without repairing the bursal defect: long-term results in a series of 124 wrist ganglia.

BACKGROUND: Some surgeons consider the abscission of a part of the articular bursa around the point of the input of ganglion's nape (average 1-2 cm diameter) to be very important with excellent results. However, a literature search revealed disagreement as to whether it is essential to repair a bursa defect. This study examined the effectiveness of this method without repairing the articular defect. An attempt was made to identify the anatomical origin of wrist ganglia during the surgical procedure. METHODS: This study evaluated 124 wrist ganglia that had been treated surgically during 2004-2

Effect of superior cervical ganglionectomy on the ultrastructure of pinealocytes in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus): quantitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Superior cervical ganglia are of crucial importance in regulating the secretion of the pineal hormone melatonin. Changes in pineal morphology have been observed in many mammalian species after sympathectomy. Therefore, we decided to investigate the ultrastructure of Djungarian hamster pinealocytes following superior cervical ganglionectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight adult female Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) were used in this study. The superior cervical ganglia were removed bilaterally in four animals, whereas the other four animals served as sham-operated controls. T

Superior cervical ganglionectomy-induced lowering of intraocular pressure in rabbits: role of prostaglandins and neuropeptide Y.

At 22-24 h after unilateral ganglionectomy (SX), intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly (p < 0.001) reduced in SX eyes compared either with the contralateral, normally innervated eyes or with baseline measurements. SX raised prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), PGF2alpha, and neuropeptide Y (NPY) concentrations in the aqueous humor but reduced these levels in the iris-ciliary body. At 22-24 h after bilateral SX, flurbiprofen (0.03%) significantly (p < 0.001) inhibited the reduction of IOP and the elevation of PGE2 and PGF2alpha levels in the aqueous humor. We conclude that PGs mediate the reduction
