Accounting for misclassified and unknown cause of death data in vital registration systems for estimating trends in HIV mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Misclassification of HIV deaths can substantially diminish the usefulness of cause of death data for decision-making. In this study, we describe the methods developed by the Global Burden of Disease Study to account for the misclassified cause of death data from vital registration systems for estimating HIV mortality in 132 countries and territories. METHODS: The cause of death data were obtained from the World Health Organization Mortality Database and official country-specific mortality databases. We implemented two steps to adjust the raw cause of death data: (1) redistributi

Utilising Group-Size and Home-Range Characteristics of Free-Roaming Dogs (FRD) to Guide Mass Vaccination Campaigns against Rabies in India.

Adequate vaccination coverage of free roaming dogs (FRD) against canine rabies is not achieved primarily due to difficulties in administering parenteral vaccinations to this population. One factor associated with this difficulty is the tendency of FRD to form groups, which increases their aggressive behavior, resulting in a significant risk of dog-bites for the vaccinators. This study investigated factors that influenced FRD forming groups and their home-ranges, using data obtained from photographic capture-recapture/sight-resight surveys conducted in rural Shirsuphal (584 sightings) and urban

Efficient solar desalination for clean water production from different wastewaters.

Solar energy is one of the sustainable sources for many fruitful applications. Desalination of wastewater by solar power is a priority research focus and has attracted many researchers and scientists world-wide. However, handling industrial and other wastewater is typically a challenging task for effective treatment and re-use. The presence of contaminants in the effluent is hazardous to the environment and human health. In the present work, an attempt has been made to investigate different wastewaters including (i) garbage wastewater, (ii) waste vegetable water, (iii) landfill leachate, and (

The reusage of different wastes by using the multiple's effect technique for sustainable gasoline production.

The unused garbage which is accumulating the landfills, such as raw materials, could be reused for synthetic gasoline production. This study presents the multiple's effect technique, which is based on the reusage of different non, party and sorted municipal solid wastes (MSW), or biogas for syngas, converted into synthetic gasoline. The novelties of this technique include a basic multiple's effect parameter (MUW), which present a level of waste sorting, an effect of oxygen inhibition into different wastes, a simplified mathematical model and simulation with an Aspen Plus® simulator using the r

Evaluation of the mortality registry in Ecuador (2001-2013) - social and geographical inequalities in completeness and quality.

BACKGROUND: Mortality registries are an essential data source for public health surveillance and for planning and evaluating public policy. Nevertheless, there are still large inequalities in the completeness and quality of mortality registries between and within countries. In Ecuador, there have been few nationwide evaluations of the mortality registry and no evaluations of inequalities between provinces. This kind of analysis is fundamental for strengthening the vital statistics system. METHODS: Ecological study assessing the completeness, quality and internal consistency of mortality data

Demographic characteristics of free-roaming dogs (FRD) in rural and urban India following a photographic sight-resight survey.

An understanding of the core demographic characteristics of the sub-populations of FRD is essential to effectively implement both rabies control interventions through mass vaccination of FRD, and dog population control programmes. This study compares the data obtained following photographic sight-resight surveys in rural (Shirsuphal village in west India) and urban (Municipal Corporation Panchkula in north India) locations . A total of 263 and 1408  FRD were seen at least once through 617 and 3465 sightings in the rural and urban sites, respectively. The rural location had a lower proportion o

Human gut microbe co-cultures have greater potential than monocultures for food waste remediation to commodity chemicals.

Food waste represents an underutilized resource for commodity chemical generation. Constituents of the human gut microbiota that are already adapted to a food waste stream could be repurposed for useful chemical production. Industrial fermentations utilizing these microbes maintain organisms in isolation; however, microbial consortia offer an attractive alternative to monocultures in that metabolic interactions may result in more efficient processes with higher yields. Here we computationally assess the ability of co-cultures vs. monocultures to anaerobically convert a Western diet to commodit

CO2 Capture from Flue Gas: A High-Fidelity Force Field and Machine Learning Framework for Adsorbent Discovery.

CO2 from flue gas is central to mitigating fossil-fuel-derived emissions, where adsorbent performance directly dictates process energy efficiency and process cost. Although machine learning (ML) has emerged as a powerful tool for accelerating adsorbent discovery, its predictive accuracy is fundamentally limited by the physical reliability of the underlying training data, a manifestation of the "garbage in, garbage out" (GIGO) problem. Most existing CO2 adsorption databases rely on Lennard-Jones (LJ) force fields, whose deficiencies in describing CO2-CO2 and CO2-framework interactions, particul
