Although ammonia (NH3) synthesis efficiency from the NO reduction reaction (NORR) is significantly promoted in recent years, one should note that NO is one of the major air pollutants in the flue gas. The limited NO conversion ratio is still the key challenge for the sustainable development of the NORR route, which potentially contributes more to contaminant emissions rather than its upcycling. Herein, we provide a simple but effective approach for continuous NO reduction into NH3, promoted by coexisting SO2 poison as a gift in the flue gas. It is significant to discover that SO2 plays a decis

Portal vein gas accumulation and intestinal pneumatosis are uncommon signs indicating a high mortality risk in cases of intestinal ischemic necrosis. However, the widespread use of computed tomography has led to an increase in detection of benign lesions. We report a case of portal vein gas accumulation resulting from organophosphorus pesticide poisoning. A male patient was brought to the hospital in a comatose state with bilateral pupils that measured 1.0 mm, and he showed shortness of breath and wet rattles in the lungs. A cholinesterase concentration of 214 U/L was detected on an auxiliary

At present, the death cases of simple asphyxiant gas acute poisoning are increasing sharply. Common asphyxiant gases in death cases include nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, methane, propane, laughing gas, etc. Simple asphyxiant gas has no affinity for biological matrices and escapes quickly, which puts forward new requirements for autopsy procedures, selection and collection of samples, laboratory analysis and identification. This paper reviews the research and development process of death cases caused by simple asphyxiant gas acute poisoning and put forwards the collection and analysis strat

Chlorine gas inhalation represents a rare but devastating toxicological emergency, capable of inducing fulminant acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and cardiovascular collapse. Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation as a salvage therapy for a child who suffered refractory cardiac arrest following severe chlorine gas-induced ARDS can be lifesaving.

Intentional or unintentional intake of anticholinesterase pesticides became common due to their extensive use in agricultural and domestic purposes, resulting in numerous poisoning cases. A simple, accurate, and sensitive gas chromatography-ion trap mass spectrometry-based method for the quantification of 12 anticholinesterase pesticides (monocrotophos, dimethoate, dichlorvos, azinphos-methyl, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, dialifos, diazinon, malathion, parathion, methidathion, and terbufos) in serum was developed, and its utility in patients with alleged pesticides poisoning was assessed. The qua

A case of lethal poisoning due to trichlorofluoromethane (FC11) inhalation is described. The fluorocarbon was determined in biological tissues by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. FC11 was detected in all the examined tissues, with decreasing levels in heart, lung, brain, liver, blood, kidney, and spleen. The highest concentration measured in heart could be related to the mode of toxic action of fluorocarbons postulated by many authors, characterized by the sensitization of the myocardium to the catecholamines producing arrhythmia and cardiac arrest. Nevertheless the aspecific pi

Exposure to chlorine gas can result in serious adverse effects including death. From 2000 through 2005, approximately 9000 chlorine gas exposures were reported annually to poison control centers in the United States. Because a review of the literature failed to produce any Texas-specific data concerning chlorine gas exposures, we conducted a retrospective review of Texas poison control center calls and found that 2643 calls related to human exposures to chlorine gas occurred during these 6 years. The number of these calls increased during this period. Of the exposures, 750% occurred at home an

CONTEXT: Sulfur mustard (SM) and lewisite are vesicant chemical warfare agents that can cause skin blistering and chronic lung complications. During 1929-1945, a Japanese factory produced poisonous gases, which included SM, lewisite and other chemical weapons. The aim of this study was to investigate the chest computed tomography (CT) findings among long-term survivors who worked at this factory.
METHODS: During 2009-2012, we evaluated chest CT findings from 346 long-term survivors who worked at the poison gas factory. Skin lesions were used as an indicator of significant exposure to vesicant

Headspace gas chromatography with split flame-ionization-electron-capture detection is a simple method of screening for a wide range of volatile substances in biological fluids. A 60 m x 0.53 mm i.d. thick-film (5 microns) fused-silica capillary coated with SPB-1 (Supelchem) with split flame-ionization-electron-capture detection provides a valuable alternative to packed columns in this work. Most commonly abused compounds, including many with very low boiling-points such as bromochlorodifluoromethane (BCF), butane, dimethyl ether, FC 11, FC 12, isobutane and propane, can be retained and differ

Municipal solid waste incineration flue gas often contains chlorobenzene (CB) and elemental mercury, yet practical removal is complicated by coexisting alkaline species (such as CaO) and SO2, which deactivate catalysts and pose risks from chlorinated by-products and mercury emissions. Herein, a three-dimensional porous CuO-modified CeO2-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared via a dual-templating method to investigate the simultaneous removal of CB and Hg0 following CaO and/or SO2 pretreatment, revealing an unexpected poison-against-poison mechanism between CaO and SO2 that restores deep oxidation capaci

Hydrogen peroxide poisoning is a rare but potentially severe poisoning that can cause digestive tract irritation and/or gas embolism when ingested. The clinical presentation varies from asymptomatic patients to severe embolic consequences or even death. There is little evidence on the treatment of such poisoning to guide physicians in caring for these patients. This paper reports on two cases of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide poisoning after accidental ingestion. Both patients showed evidence of portal venous gas, with one patient exhibiting significant symptoms while the other did not.

An 8-year-old, crossbred beef cow was referred to the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University for a complete necropsy in October 2009. The cow was the sixth to die in a 7-day period. Affected cows were reportedly stumbling and became weak, excitable, and recumbent. Histologically, myonecrosis was severe in the skeletal muscles and mild in the heart and tongue. According to the submitter, exposure to a poisonous plant was suspected, and a plant specimen received from this case was identified as white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima). Using the white snakeroot specimen,

BACKGROUND: Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) is a potent disinfectant and bleaching agent widely used in industrial applications. When TCCA comes into contact with water, chlorine gas and hypochlorous acid are produced. Although acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) induced by chlorine gas inhalation is rare, if untreated, it can progress to severe respiratory failure. Currently, no standardized glucocorticoid dosing protocol exists for ARDS management in such cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report details the case of a 49-year-old male who developed ARDS following chlorine gas inhalation

Thiocyanate is an inorganic compound used in industrial applications. Here, we report a case of suicidal death due to acute thiocyanate overdose. A 44-year-old man who consumed an unknown amount of thiocyanate solution was transferred to the emergency room and died 2 h after admission. An autopsy was performed 2 days after death. General toxicological analysis of blood using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry found no drug or alcohol. Quantification using GC-MS post-derivatization with pentafluorobenzyl bromide revealed 2,290 and 1,9
