Gastrointestinal growth factors and pancreatic islet hormones during postoperative IGF-I supplementation in man.

Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) has been demonstrated to exert a nitrogen sparing effect, both experimentally and in patients after abdominal surgery. IGF-I is a major mediator for the anabolic effects of growth hormone (GH). Whether elevated circulating IGF-I levels are the sole mediator of the anabolic effects following GH has not been clarified. IGF-I influences glucose metabolism, both through its own specific receptor and by activating the insulin receptor, and has also been proposed to influence pancreatic islet secretion directly. In the present study, the postoperative effects of

Colonic motility, autonomic function, and gastrointestinal hormones under psychological stress on irritable bowel syndrome.

Effects of an artificial mental stress on colonic motility, autonomic nervous system, and gastrointestinal hormones were examined in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The subjects were 20 patients with typical IBS and 12 controls. A transducer was inserted to the sigmoid colon from the anus for measuring colonic intraluminal pressure, and mirror drawing test was loaded as psychological stress. At the same time, coefficient of variation of R-R interval on ECG (CV-RR) was measured and the levels of plasma catecholamines, gastrin, glucagon, and motilin were assessed. Colonic motility

Effects of Desmodium caudatum on Gastrointestinal Hormones and Intestinal Flora in Rats with Gastritis.

In order to preliminarily explore the effects of Desmodium caudatum on gastritis and intestinal flora in rats, a chronic gastritis rat model was established using the classic sodium salicylate method. Eighteen SPF rats were divided into three groups: the control group (Group C), the model group (Group M), and the treatment group (Group T). Pathological sections of the gastric wall were taken from rats in each group. Furthermore, the concentrations of gastrin and malondialdehyde in the serum of rats in each group were determined by ELISA. Additionally, the effects of D. caudatum on the intestin

Effects of gastrointestinal hormones on the electrical and mechanical activity of the cat stomach.

Effects of gastrointestinal hormones on electrical and mechanical activity of smooth muscle of cat stomach were studied. Spontaneous electrical activity of the antrum preparation consisted of slow waves with superimposed spike-like potentials. Phasic contractions occurred synchronously with the electrical activity. Pentagastrin, tetragastrin, pancreozymin and secretin increased frequency of slow wave component and amplitude of phasic contraction. Atropine and tetrodotoxin did not block the spike-like potential and slow wave component. Noradrenaline and verapamil blocked the phasic contraction.

Calcium-Sensing Receptor Regulation of Gastrointestinal Hormone Secretion.

The interaction of dietary nutrients with chemoreceptors in the gastrointestinal tract after a meal stimulates the secretion of gut hormones, which trigger the key processes of digestion and absorption, and also regulate energy intake and postprandial glycemia. One of these receptors, first recognized for its capacity to gauge extracellular calcium (Ca2+), is the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR). Subsequent to its cloning, the CaSR was found to sense not only Ca2+, but also L-amino acids (AAs) and, based on solved protein structures, distinct binding sites have been reported for Ca2+ ions and t

Gastrointestinal carcinoids: characterization by site of origin and hormone production.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a large series of patients with carcinoid tumors in terms of presenting symptoms, hormonal data, stage at diagnosis, pathologic features, and survival. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Published series have described significant prognostic features of carcinoid tumors as site of origin, age, sex, stage at diagnosis, presence of high hormone levels, and increased T stage. Of these, stage at diagnosis and T stage seem to emerge most often as independent predictors of survival in multivariate analyses. Of carcinoid tumors, those arising from a midgut location have higher levels of

Growth hormone receptor expression in the rat gastrointestinal tract.

We have used immunohistochemistry to define the cellular distribution of GH receptors in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and its derivatives. Immunohistochemistry was performed in the adult rat GIT with a panel of characterized monoclonal antibodies to the GH receptor. The most intense and heterogeneous immunoreactivity was observed in epithelial cell subpopulations of GIT mucosa. Mesenchymal elements of the GIT were homogenously and moderately immunoreactive. Intense immunoreactivity was observed in the ductal epithelium of the sublingual gland, scattered basal epidermal cells of the esophag

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone immunoreactivity in the gastrointestinal tract of man.

TRH inhibits gastric secretion, gastric motility, and pancreatic enzyme secretion in man. We measured TRH immunoreactivity (TRH-IR) in mucosal and transmural biopsies from different parts of the stomach, pylorus, duodenum, and pancreas in patients undergoing surgery or gastroscopy. TRH-IR was found in pancreas (range, 1.64-3.27 pg TRH/mg protein) and in mucosa of the fundus (13.3 +/- 2.0 pg TRH/mg protein), antrum (22.5 +/- 4.5 pg TRH/mg protein), and duodenum (35.5 +/- 6.4 mg TRH/mg protein). Low levels of TRH-IR were found in transmural biopsies from fundus, antrum, and pylorus (range, 0.45-

[Role of gastrointestinal hormones in pathogenesis of functional diseases of the digestive system in adolescent].

The author studied concentration of gastrin and holecistokinin in 68 adolescent with functional disease of the digestive system and vegetative dysfunctions. Considerable increase was established in the level of blood plasma gastrin in patients with gastroesophageal reflux and functional dyspepsia associated with increased motor function of the stomach. There is direct interrelation between the level of blood hormones and rate of vegetative dysfunctions and it testifies the role of the neuroendocrine system in the development of diseases of gastrointestinal system in adolescents.

Effects of gastrointestinal hormones on the electrical and mechanical activities of the cat small intestine.

Effects of gastrointestinal hormones on the electrical and mechanical activities of the smooth muscle of the cat small intestine were examined. Both spontaneous electrical and mechanical activities of the intestinal smooth muscle were inhibited by tetragastrin, pentagastrin and pancreozymin. The spike activity and the phasic contraction of the smooth muscle were depressed by these hormones while the slow waves were maintaned. On the other hand, secretin showed an excitatory action on the mechanical activity of the isolated preparation of smooth muscle. Spike activity disappeared and the level

Capsaicin-induced satiety is associated with gastrointestinal distress but not with the release of satiety hormones.

BACKGROUND: Capsaicin, which is the major pungent principle in chili peppers, is able to induce satiety and reduce caloric intake. The exact mechanism behind this satiating effect is still unknown. We hypothesized that capsaicin induces satiety through the release of gastrointestinal peptides, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY), from enteroendocrine cells in the small intestine. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the effects of an intraduodenal capsaicin infusion (1.5 mg pure capsaicin) in healthy volunteers on hunger, satiety, and gastrointestinal symptoms and the release of

Effect of Helicobacter pylori infection on gastric emptying and gastrointestinal hormones in dyspeptic and healthy subjects.

There is no general agreement as regards the effect of Helicobacter pylori infection on gastric emptying in patients with functional dyspepsia. Food releases several gastrointestinal hormones, and some of these are known to contribute to the regulation of gastric emptying. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of H. pylori on gastric emptying in dyspeptic and healthy subjects and to verify whether different hormone secretion patterns are affected by the presence of the bacterium. Twenty-seven patients affected by functional dyspepsia and 30 asymptomatic healthy subjects entere

Effects of a gastric implant on body weight and gastrointestinal hormones in cafeteria diet obese rats.

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of a gastric implant in an animal model of dietary obesity, silicone implants (2.5 ml) were inserted into the stomachs of male rats maintained on a chow or "cafeteria" diet. At the time of implantation, the cafeteria fed rats weighed 14% more than chow fed controls. Overweight cafeteria fed animals lost weight in response to the gastric implant, whereas control chow fed animals did not. Both implant groups had significant increases in stomach weights in contrast to sham implant groups, but the increase was much less in the cafeteria diet group. The fastin

Action of gastrointestinal hormones on the myoelectric activity of the sphincter of Oddi in living rabbit.

The aim of this work was to compare the action of gastrointestinal (GI) hormones on the myoelectrical activity of the sphincter of Oddi. Using an experimental design previously described, we studied the electrical activity of the sphincter of Oddi and compared the percentage variation in the number of spikes before and after injection of hormones. Increasing doses of the following hormones were injected i.v. at random: CCK, OP-CCK, caerulein, bombesin, gastrin, secretin and glucagon. CCK and caerulein (as previously found), and also bombesin, OP-CCK and gastrin increased the spikes activity of
