The impact of gender equity in agriculture on nutritional status, diets, and household food security: a mixed-methods systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Undernutrition rates remain high in rural, low-income settings, where large, gender-based inequities persist. We hypothesised that increasing gender equity in agriculture could improve nutrition. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review to assess the associations between gender-based inequities (in income, land, livestock, and workloads) and nutrition, diets and food security outcomes in agricultural contexts of low-income and middle-income countries. Between 9 March and 7 August 2018, we searched 18 databases and 14 journals, and contacted 27 experts. We included quantitative

Anesthesiology Residency Case Volumes Through the COVID-19 Pandemic: National Trends in Training Experience and Gender Equity (2018-2023).

BACKGROUND: Whereas procedural volume has often been used as a proxy for experience, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) case logs and minimum case requirements are designed primarily to document resident exposure and to help determine whether training programs provide sufficient breadth and volume of clinical experiences for their approved complement of residents. However, concerns persist regarding variability in clinical exposure across training institutions, the significant disruption to procedural training during the COVID-19 pandemic when elective cases were susp

Making progress on One Health policies and programmes: Perspectives on community engagement and gender equity in four West African countries.

INTRODUCTION: Gender equity and community engagement are increasingly recognised as important for the implementation of equitable One Health (OH) actions, yet no published studies examine how these are operationalised in policies and programmes. We analyse policy content and stakeholder perspectives on community engagement and gender equity in OH policies and programmes in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. METHODS: Mixed methods encompassed: content analysis of OH documents (7 core and 9 supporting); key informant interviews (KIIs) with policy stakeholders (n = 47) and focus group di

A One Health Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (OH GESI) Framework to strengthen equity goals of One Health implementation tools.

There is a persistent lack of gender and social inclusion in widely used One Health assessment, planning and implementation tools, underscoring the gap between high-level One Health policy commitments to equality and inclusion and real-world practice. Most One Health tools, including those produced by international agencies with high-level commitments, do not adequately address gender equality or social equity. To tackle this issue, the authors developed the One Health Gender Equality and Social Inclusion assessment framework (OH-GESI), which evaluates how tools support gender equality, empowe

A Comparative Analysis of the Critical Resilience and Gender Equity of Mothers Impacted by Albinism: Promising Practices From Tanzania and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Women bear the brunt of human rights violations faced by persons with albinism, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to insufficient access to skin and eye care, increased rates of skin cancer, stigma and discrimination, and threats of mutilation and murder as they are reportedly trafficked for economic gain, they face heightened gender-based violence linked to misbeliefs about albinism. This study explored through a human rights lens the resilience of mothers affected by albinism, at the intersection of gender, colorism, and religion in Tanzania and South Africa. METHODS

Evidence-informed interventions and best practices for supporting women experiencing or at risk of homelessness: a scoping review with gender and equity analysis.

INTRODUCTION: While much of the literature on homelessness is centred on the experience of men, women make up over one-quarter of Canada's homeless population. Research has shown that women experiencing homelessness are often hidden (i.e. provisionally housed) and have different pathways into homelessness and different needs as compared to men. The objective of this research is to identify evidence-based interventions and best practices to better support women experiencing or at risk of homelessness. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review with a gender and equity analysis. This involved searc

Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial Evaluation of a Gender Equity and Family Planning Intervention for Married Men and Couples in Rural India.

BACKGROUND: Despite ongoing recommendations to increase male engagement and gender-equity (GE) counseling in family planning (FP) services, few such programs have been implemented and rigorously evaluated. This study evaluates the impact of CHARM, a three-session GE+FP counseling intervention delivered by male health care providers to married men, alone (sessions 1&2) and with their wives (session 3) in India. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A two-armed cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted with young married couples (N = 1081 couples) recruited from 50 geographic clusters (25 clusters rand

The relative power output and relative lean body mass of World and Olympic male and female champions with implications for gender equity.

A uniform measure of the gender-related differential performance of female and male Olympic and World champions is proposed: relative power output applied to the environment. Laws of physics are employed to derive equations for estimating relative power output. In previous controlled laboratory studies, equally trained male and female athletes were shown to have a relative power output not significantly different from relative lean body mass. As to the estimated power output for 32 Olympic and World championship events contested between 1976 and 2004, eight in running, four in speed skating, t

Characteristics of a transgender and gender-diverse patient population in Utah: Use of electronic health records to advance clinical and health equity research.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people, individuals whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth, face unique challenges in accessing gender-affirming care and often experience disparities in a variety of health outcomes. Clinical research on TGD health is limited by a lack of standardization on how to best identify these individuals. The objective of this retrospective cohort analysis was to accurately identify and describe TGD adults and their use of gender-affirming care from 2003-2023 in a healthcare system in Utah, United States. Health systems resilience in fragile and shock-prone settings through the prism of gender equity and justice: implications for research, policy and practice.

Fragile and shock-prone settings (FASP) present a critical development challenge, eroding efforts to build healthy, sustainable and equitable societies. Power relations and inequities experienced by people because of social markers, e.g., gender, age, education, ethnicity, and race, intersect leading to poverty and associated health challenges. Concurrent to the growing body of literature exploring the impact of these intersecting axes of inequity in FASP settings, there is a need to identify actions promoting gender, equity, and justice (GEJ). Gender norms that emphasise toxic masculinity, pa

Productivity, efficiency and gender equity of community mobilisation approaches in trichiasis campaigns: analysis of programmatic data from seven sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: Achieving elimination of trachoma as a public health problem in trichiasis-endemic districts requires a systematic approach to trichiasis case finding and outreach. METHODS: Programme monitoring data from seven countries for 2017-2019 were used to explore the efficiency of different community mobilisation approaches and uptake of trichiasis surgical services. RESULTS: Three countries (Ethiopia, Kenya and Mozambique) using broad-based community mobilisation strategies had large numbers of people presenting at outreach but only 2.9% of them had trichiasis, while in four countries (

Sexual and gender minority relevant policies in Canadian and United States organ and tissue donation and transplantation systems: An opportunity to improve equity and safety.

Current policies in organ and tissue donation and transplantation (OTDT) systems in Canada and the United States unnecessarily restrict access to donation for sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) and pose safety risks to transplant recipients. We compare SGM-relevant policies between the Canadian and United States systems. Policy domains include the risk assessment of living and deceased organ and tissue donors, physical examination considerations, viral testing recommendations, and informed consent and communication. Identified gaps between current evidence and existing OTDT policies along wit

Impact of State-Level Metrics of Equity on Psychosocial Outcomes for Sexual and Gender Minority Caregivers of People Living With Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

PURPOSE: We examined the relationship between state-level equity scores as it relates to protections and supports of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals at the state level and psychosocial caregiving outcomes among SGM caregivers of people living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). METHOD: Data collected from SGM caregivers of people with ADRD were combined with publicly available state-level equity scores. We used mixed linear models to examine the relationships between equity scores and levels of family quality of life and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: SGM careg

WASH and learn: a scoping review of health, education and gender equity outcomes of school-based water, sanitation and hygiene in low-income and middle-income countries.

School-age children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) face health and educational challenges due to inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in schools (WinS). Evidence for the impact of WinS interventions is limited and inconsistent, and previous systematic reviews have faced challenges in synthesising data due to varied interventions, study designs and outcome measures, although most do not examine this variability in more detail. This scoping review identified 83 experimental studies from 33 LMICs measuring a primary or secondary health or educational outcome among pu

Working conditions, career barriers and perceived equity among neuro-oncology professionals: insights from the Japan society for neuro-oncology (JSNO) gender equality and diversity committee survey.

BACKGROUND: Gender equity, work-life balance, and career development have become important concerns in the medical profession. However, empirical evidence on how neuro-oncology professionals experience working conditions, career barriers, and perceived inequity remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, cross-sectional, anonymous online survey of members of the Japan Society for Neuro-Oncology (JSNO) to evaluate working conditions, career-related concerns, job satisfaction, perceived workplace discrimination, and organizational challenges. Effectiveness of a resilience, gender equity and mental health group intervention for young people living in informal urban communities in North India: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are the leading cause of disease burden among young people in India. While evidence shows that youth mental health and resilience can be improved with group interventions in school settings, such an intervention has not been robustly evaluated in informal urban settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether the Nae Disha 3 group intervention could improve youth resilience, mental health and gender equal attitudes among disadvantaged young people from low-income urban communities in India. METHODS: This cluster randomised controlled trial used an

Transgender and gender diverse persons' sexually transmitted infection testing: a mixed methods study to understand primary care providers' training gaps and desires to promote sexual health equity.

BACKGROUND: Transgender (trans) and gender diverse (TGD) people experience sexual health inequities, including high rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), driven by anti-trans stigma. Yet, TGD people also face barriers to STI testing related to anti-trans stigma, including a lack of access to knowledgeable and affirming primary care providers (PCPs), including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. We sought to understand the current practices, comfort, and knowledge gaps of PCPs in performing gender-affirming STI testing, particularly non-HIV STI te

Post Hoc, Sex-Specific Subgroup Analysis of Efgartigimod in Patients With Generalized Myasthenia Gravis From the ADAPT Trial: A Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) Guidelines Approach.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Sex-specific differences in myasthenia gravis (MG) are widely acknowledged, yet data on sex-based outcomes of MG treatment are scarce. In accordance with Sex and Gender Equity in Research guidelines, this post hoc analysis assessed potential sex-specific differences in treatment outcomes in acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive (AChR-Ab+) generalized (g)MG participants in the Phase 3 ADAPT trial (NCT03669588). METHODS: Participants received four once-weekly efgartigimod infusions (10 mg/kg) or placebo per cycle. Endpoints (primary: proportion of Myasthenia Gravis Activit

Do laws promoting gender equity and freedom from violence benefit the most vulnerable? A multilevel analysis of women's and adolescent girls' experiences in 15 low- and-middle-income countries.

In this analysis, we assess whether laws that promote gender equity and freedom from violence are associated with a lower risk of prior-year physical and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) among adolescent girls and adult women (AGW) and whether these laws protect more and less vulnerable AGW equally. We included all 15 countries that administered the Domestic Violence Module in a Demographic and Health Survey since 2015. The primary exposure was a validated, country-level index of laws on violence against women and girls (LoVI). A multilevel approach was used to model five forms of violen

Scaling HIV self-testing to improve health equity among cisgender gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men, trans and gender-diverse people in the United Kingdom: An HIV self-testing implementation action framework.

BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST) is feasible, highly acceptable and can increase HIV testing uptake/frequency without harm while also reducing costs. Despite HIVST's benefits, UK service provision has been sporadic partially due to policymakers and commissioners' reluctance over concerns about linkage to care/surveillance, which ultimately reduces user choice. METHODS: We synthesized current evidence and in a multidisciplinary collaboration developed an Implementation Action Framework to facilitate and promote person-centred HIVST provision, focusing on reducing health inequalities among
