Aim To determine the prevalence of restoration overhangs in a general dental practice and investigate if these are associated with an increase in the rate of alveolar bone loss locally. Methods Historical dental records were randomly and anonymously selected from the records of patients in a general dental practice. The most recent bitewing radiographs were examined and any overhangs were recorded along with location. Sequential bitewing radiographs were examined so that the restored tooth with an overhang could be compared over time with a similar but unrestored tooth which acted as a control.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about how effective general dental practitioners (GDPs) are in treating temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The overall aim of this study was to compare the lower stabilising splint (SS) with a non-occluding control (CS) for the management of TMD in general dental practice.
METHOD: A total of 93 TMD patients attending 11 GDPs were randomly allocated to SS or CS. Diagnosis was according to International Headache Society Criteria. Outcome criteria included pain visual analogue scale (VAS), number of tender muscles, aggregate joint tenderness, inter-incisal opening,

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dentin hypersensitivity is uncertain, yet appropriate diagnosis and treatment of dentin hypersensitivity require accurate knowledge regarding its prevalence. The authors conducted a study to estimate the prevalence of dentin hypersensitivity in general dental practices and to investigate associated risk factors.
METHODS: The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey of 787 adult patients from 37 general dental practices within Northwest Practice-based Research Collaborative in Evidence-based DENTistry (PRECEDENT). Dentin hypersensitivity was diagnosed by means o

OBJECTIVE: To describe the characteristics of attendances and patients who present to family medical practitioners with oral or dental problems.
DESIGN: Secondary analysis of standard consultation data.
SETTING: 30 family medical practices in the General Practice Morbidity Database for Wales.
SUBJECTS: All patients who presented at the practices with an oral or dental complaint during 1996.
RESULTS: Of the 1,650,882 patient attendances at the 30 medical practices in the study year, 4,891 (0.3%) were for oral/dental problems. The frequency of these attendances varied considerably between pr

The long-term clinical management of caries and periodontal diseases requires a double approach, one that is concerned with both treatment and prevention. Dentists should recognise the risk factors and their likely triggers to be able to implement the right strategy as early as the diagnostic phase. This comprehensive assessment can easily be done in general practice. All it takes is to combine the patient's general information with the systemic and behavioural factors, and the clinical observations with the local factors. The resulting patient profile can thus effectively support treatment by

AIM: To determine the potential of a pathology-free impacted lower third molar to cause symptoms within a year and whether these symptoms can be linked to clinical characteristics, lifestyle or socio-demographic status.
DESIGN: One-year prospective cohort study of patients registered in general dental practice in Scotland with at least one asymptomatic impacted lower third molar.
METHODS: All general dental practices with panoramic radiography facilities in Tayside, Fife and Greater Glasgow (Scotland, UK) were invited to participate in the study. Orthopantomographs taken between 1995 and 200

This study aimed to characterize the biofilm-forming microbial communities on clinically used dental elevators to assess their potential risks of cross-contamination and nosocomial infections resulting from percutaneous injuries in dental healthcare settings. Over a period of 3 consecutive weeks starting on August 1, 2024, biofilm samples were collected from the tips of 15 dental elevators used on the first five wisdom teeth extraction patients daily. Total DNA was extracted, and specific barcoded primers were synthesized to construct SMRTbell sequencing libraries, which were subsequently sequ

Desquamative gingivitis (DG) is a clinical sign characterized by gingival erythema, epithelial desquamation, and erosion rather than a discrete diagnosis. It most commonly reflects underlying oral lichen planus, mucous membrane pemphigoid, or pemphigus vulgaris. As affected patients typically present to general dental practitioners, timely recognition and structured triage are essential for effective management. However, diagnostic delays remain common and can extend the management period by several months. This narrative review synthesizes the current evidence on the clinical presentation, ep

Actinomycosis is a suppurative and often chronic bacterial infection most commonly caused by Actinomyces israelii. It is rare in dental practice. In the case reported the patient presented to his general dental practitioner complaining of a loose upper denture. This was found to be due to an actinomycotic infection which had caused extensive destruction and sequestration of the maxillary and nasal bones and subsequent deviation of the nasal septum.

An abstract of this study was presented at the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Dental Anesthesiology Research Group in Honolulu, Hawaii, in March of 2004. This study was conducted to correlate the intraoperative and postoperative morbidity associated with moderate and deep sedation, also known as monitored anesthesia care (MAC), provided in a General Practice Residency (GPR) clinic under the supervision of a dentist anesthesiologist. After internal review board approval was obtained, 100 parenteral moderate and deep sedation cases performed by the same dentist anesthesiologist

OBJECTIVES: To provide a pain-predictive model for the non-operative management of carious deciduous teeth from the analysis of data from a retrospective analysis of clinical case notes of children regularly attending two general dental practices and receiving preventive care.
DESIGN: A clearly defined protocol was used to determine the fate of deciduous teeth diagnosed as carious into dentine but symptomless and left unrestored from the sequential examination of the clinical records of 480 children attending at least annually.
RESULTS: The age of the children at the first visit when carious

This article details the unusual presentation of an oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) referred to secondary care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The patient's chief complaints were trismus and pain from a lower left partially erupted third molar, which was assumed to be pericoronitis-related on referral. Intra-oral examination was difficult due to the patient's symptoms, but radiographic assessment of an orthopantomogram (OPG) showed a pathological fracture and poorly defined radiolucency in the lower left third molar region. Oral SCC was diagnosed after biopsy, and surgery and radiotherapy wer

OBJECTIVES: The study aim was to evaluate the prevalence of self-reported temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and acceptance or nonacceptance of such disorders in adult patients attending all public dental health services in the County of Sörmland, Sweden, during a 3-year period, 2011-2013.
METHODS: Two questions were asked about TMD and the voluntary mouth-opening capacity was measured. The results were registered in a score 0-3. The registration was completed with a question about each patient's acceptance or nonacceptance of their condition.
RESULTS: More than 73,000 registrations of the TM

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the clinical performance and longevity of double-crown-retained removable-dental-prostheses (DCR-RDP) with spark-eroded friction pins inserted in a general dental practice and followed up over a period of 30 years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study observed the influence of various factors on the longevity of the DCR-RDPs with spark-eroded friction pins and the abutment teeth using Kaplan-Meier estimation (log-rank test, p < .05) estimation and Cox regression (α = 0.05).
RESULTS: During a mean fol
