Using greater superficial petrosal nerve and geniculate ganglion as the only two landmarks for identifying internal auditory canal in middle fossa approach.

The middle fossa approach is a surgical technique indicated for acoustic neuroma with advantages of complete tumor removal and hearing preservation. Various methods have been developed for identifying internal auditory canal (IAC). Here, we describe a new method, which uses greater superficial petrosal nerve (GSPN) and geniculate ganglion (GG) as the only two landmarks to identify IAC. In this study, the surgical anatomy and relations between GSPN, GG, petrous ridge, and IAC were measured on 20 temporal bone specimens and 40 HRCT scans of normal inner ear structures. The temporal bone study sh

Oral Sensory Neurons of the Geniculate Ganglion That Express Tyrosine Hydroxylase Comprise a Subpopulation That Contacts Type II and Type III Taste Bud Cells.

Oral sensory neurons of the geniculate ganglion (GG) innervate taste papillae and buds on the tongue and soft palate. Electrophysiological recordings of these neurons and fibers revealed complexity in the number of unique response profiles observed, suggesting there are several distinct neuronal subtypes. Molecular descriptions of these subpopulations are incomplete. We report here the identification of a subpopulation of GG oral sensory neurons in mice by expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). TH-expressing geniculate neurons represent 10-20% of oral sensory neurons and these neurons innerv

Decompression of the geniculate ganglion and labyrinthine segments of the facial nerve through a middle cranial fossa approach using an ultrasonic surgical system: an anatomic study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and the safety of a novel, alternative method for bone tissue management in facial nerve decompression by a middle cranial fossa approach. Several applications of Piezosurgery technology have been described, and the technique has recently been extended to otologic surgery. The piezoelectric device is a bone dissector which, using micro-vibration, preserves the anatomic integrity of soft tissue thanks to a selective action on mineralized tissue. METHODS: An anatomic dissection study was conducted on fresh-frozen adult cadaveric head

Regenerative Failure Following Rat Neonatal Chorda Tympani Transection is Associated with Geniculate Ganglion Cell Loss and Terminal Field Plasticity in the Nucleus of the Solitary Tract.

Neural insult during development results in recovery outcomes that vary dependent upon the system under investigation. Nerve regeneration does not occur if the rat gustatory chorda tympani nerve is sectioned (CTX) during neonatal (≤P10) development. It is unclear how chorda tympani soma and terminal fields are affected after neonatal CTX. The current study determined the impact of neonatal CTX on chorda tympani neurons and brainstem gustatory terminal fields. To assess terminal field volume in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), rats received CTX at P5 or P10 followed by chorda tympani la

Heat shock protein 72 confers protection in retinal ganglion cells and lateral geniculate nucleus neurons via blockade of the SAPK/JNK pathway in a chronic ocular-hypertensive rat model.

Optic nerve transection increased the expression of heat shock protein 72 (HSP72) in the lateral geniculate body, indicating that this protein is involved in the prevention of neuronal injury. Zinc sulfate and quercetin induced and inhibited the expression of HSP72, respectively. Intraperitoneal injections of zinc sulfate, SP600125 (c-Jun N-terminal kinase inhibitor), or quercetin were performed on retinal ganglion cells in a Wistar rat model of chronic ocular hypertension. Our results showed that compared with the control group, the expression of HSP72 in retinal ganglion cells and the latera

Ganglion Cell Topography Indicates Pre- or Postnatal Damage to the Retro-Geniculate Visual System, Predicts Visual Field Function and May Identify Cerebral Visual Impairment in Children - A Multiple Case Study.

In this paper, we quantify the degree of ganglion cell layer thinning due to retrograde trans-synaptic degeneration (RTSD) from retro-geniculate damage in six cases who had homonymous visual field defects known since childhood. Three had prenatal injuries, occurring close to mid-gestation and in the first parts of the early and late third trimester, respectively, and representing injuries at different early developmental stages. Three had later acquired injuries, at age 1.5, 4 and 13 years. The impact of the injury to the optic radiations was revealed by fibre tractography. The ganglion cell t

Computed tomographic features of the proximal petrous facial nerve canal in recurrent Bell's palsy.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to determine whether the narrowest dimensions of the labyrinthine facial nerve (LFN) canal on the symptomatic side in patients with unilateral recurrent Bell's palsy (BP) differ from those on the contralateral side or in asymptomatic, age- and gender-matched controls on computed tomography (CT). The secondary objectives were to assess the extent of bony covering at the geniculate ganglion and to record inter-observer reliability of the CT measurements. METHODS: The dimensions of the LFN canal at its narrowest point perpendicular to the long axis and the e

MRI of the facial nerve in idiopathic facial palsy.

The purpose of this prospective study was to define the enhancement pattern of the facial nerve in idiopathic facial paralysis (Bell's palsy) on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with routine doses of gadolinium-DTPA (0.1 mmol/kg). Using 0.5T imager, 24 patients were examined with a mean interval time of 13.7 days between the onset of symptoms and the MR examination. Contralateral asymptomatic facial nerves constituted the control group and five of the normal facial nerves (20.8%) showed enhancement confined to the geniculate ganglion. Hence, contrast enhancement limited to the geniculate gangli

Prevalence of Spontaneous Asymptomatic Facial Nerve Canal Meningoceles: A Retrospective Review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The prevalence of patent facial nerve canals and meningoceles along the facial nerve course is unknown. This study aimed to assess the frequency of such findings in asymptomatic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was completed of patients with high-resolution MR imaging of the temporal bone whose clinical presentations were unrelated to facial nerve pathology. Facial nerve canals were assessed for the presence of fluid along each segment and meningoceles within either the labyrinthine segment (fluid-filled distention, ≥1.0-mm diameter) or geniculat

Geniculate neuralgia and facial nerve sensory systems.

Although it is only a small ganglion, the geniculate ganglion subserves several different sensory systems with sensory fibers distributed to different parts of the head. The ganglion innervates chemoreceptors and phasic mechanoreceptors on the front of the tongue. In addition, the ganglion supplies mechanoreceptors of the hair follicles on the inner surface of the pinna and deep mechanoreceptors of nasal and buccal cavities. The ganglion also innervates chemoreceptors on the soft palate. No neurophysiological evidence was found for sensory innervation of the facial musculature. In considering

Hemangioma of the facial nerve: role of the geniculate capillary plexus.

Hemangioma of the facial nerve may occur more frequently than previously recognized. This benign vascular tumor most often arises in the area of the geniculate ganglion, although the reason for this site of predilection is not known. Using silicon injection and cross-sectional vessel counts, we recently demonstrated the presence of a geniculate capillary plexus (GCP) in the cat. The present study was designed to identify a similar GCP in man, if present, and to relate if to the site of predilection of hemangioma of the facial nerve. Twenty-five human facial nerves were studied in horizontally

Geniculate neuralgia: long-term results of surgical treatment.

A rare cause of otalgia is geniculate neuralgia. In its most typical form, it is characterized by severe paroxysmal neuralgic pain centered directly in the ear. The pain can be of a gradual onset and of a dull, persistent nature, but occasionally it is sharp and stabbing. When the pain becomes intractable, an operation to surgically excise the nervus intermedius and geniculate ganglion via the middle cranial fossa approach is indicated. The purpose of this article is to review the long-term outcomes in 64 patients who were treated in this manner. Findings indicate that excision of the nervus i

Trans-tensor tympani facial nerve decompression in traumatic facial nerve palsy.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical approaches previously reported for facial nerve decompression have focussed on achieving good exposure of the lateral or superior aspects of the geniculate ganglion. This report aims to describe a unique case of facial nerve decompression beneath the geniculate ganglion. PATIENT: A 30-year-old woman with right-sided facial palsy due to a temporal bone fracture. INTERVENTION: Bony fragments at the base of the geniculate ganglion were removed via a trans-tensor tympani approach with extended posterior tympanotomy. RESULTS: The patient’s facial movement recovered succes

Viral culture and electron microscopy of ganglion cells in Meniere's disease and Bell's palsy.

Specimens of Scarpa's ganglion during vestibular neurectomy were obtained in 6 cases of Meniere's disease and specimens of geniculate ganglion in 2 cases of total facial nerve decompression and studied by tissue culture methods for detection of possible herpes and cytomegalovirus infection. In electron microscopy inclusions in the form of interwoven yarn-like structures, coarse aggregates of chromatin and light nuclear bodies were found in several vestibular ganglion cells. No typical herpes virus virions could be demonstrated. The culture for viruses all proved finally negative. At present th

Stereotactic radiosurgery for facial nerve hemangioma: Case report and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve hemangiomas (FNHs) are rare tumors that primarily occur near the geniculate ganglion in the temporal bone. Despite their rarity, they can cause significant facial nerve dysfunction. The optimal management approach for FNHs remains uncertain, with surgery being the mainstay but subject to debate regarding the extent of resection and preservation of the facial nerve. METHODS: Systematic review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We queried the PubMed/Medline (accessed on 5 March 2024) electr

Expression patterns of prosaposin and neurotransmitter-related molecules in the chick paratympanic organ.

The paratympanic organ (PTO) is a small sense organ in the middle ear of birds that contains hair cells similar to those found in vestibuloauditory organs and receives afferent fibers from the geniculate ganglion. To consider the histochemical similarities between the PTO and vestibular hair cells, we examined the expression patterns of representative molecules in vestibular hair cells, including prosaposin, G protein-coupled receptor (GPR) 37 and GPR37L1 as prosaposin receptors, vesicular glutamate transporter (vGluT) 2 and vGluT3, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit α9 (nAChRα9), and gl

Ramsay hunt syndrome: a histopathologic observation of a facial sequelae.

In 1907, James Ramsay Hunt (1) described a syndrome characterized by facial nerve paralysis associated with herpetic eruption of the pinna and suggested that herpes zoster oticus resulted from a geniculate ganglionitis. However, many contemporary authors agree that this condition represents a polycranial neuronitis and not simply a geniculate ganglionitis. Thus, it is a more complex disease, and the precise pathogenesis in the temporal bone that leads to facial palsy is not yet known.

[An experimental study of herpes simplex virus infection in the facial nerve].

In the experimental animals, the author succeeded in establishing the pathogenicity of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the facial nerve. KOS strain of HSV type 1 was inoculated to the tongue or the auricle of the balb/c mouse previously treated by intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide. Between 4 and 12 days after the inoculation, the facial nerves were resected and submitted to histopathological and immunohistochemical investigations. Inflammatory changes were mainly observed in the geniculate ganglion and its proximal portion of the facial nerve irrespective of the site of the inoculati
