Bilateral Nipple Enlargement as a Secondary Effect of Anabolic Drugs: A Histopathological Mimicker of Smooth Muscle Hamartoma.

Smooth muscle hamartoma are usually solitary and congenital, may affect the genital area and nipples. Histopathologically, they are characterized by the presence of mature smooth muscle bundles. We present a 40 year-old male with bilateral nipple enlargement excised with clinical suspicion of bilateral leiomyoma. Skin biopsy shows mature, irregularly arranged smooth muscle bundles and lactiferous ducts between them. Immunohistochemistry is positive for smooth muscle actin, desmin and fumarase, but negative for estrogen and progestogen receptors. The presence of lactiferous ducts excludes bilat

Adenomatoid tumors of the female and male genital tracts express WT1.

Adenomatoid tumors are benign proliferations most often encountered in the female and male genital tracts. The mesothelial phenotype of these unusual tumors has been established by a variety of ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies, although their etiology is by no means certain. The expression of the Wilms' tumor suppressor gene, WT1, in normal, hyperplastic, and malignant mesothelial cells prompted us to analyze the expression pattern of WT1 in a series of 24 adenomatoid tumors occurring in the uterus, fallopian tube, ovary, epididymis, scrotum, and testis. Twenty-three of the tumo

Adenomatoid Tumor of the Adrenal Gland: Report of Two Cases and Review of the Literature.

Adenomatoid tumor (AT) is an uncommon benign neoplasm of mesothelial origin, usually occurring in the female and male genital tracts. Extragenital localization such as the adrenal gland is extremely rare. Until now, only 39 cases of adrenal AT have been reported in the English literature. Here we report two novel cases of adrenal AT that occurred in male patients aged 30 and 31 years. The tumors were discovered incidentally by computed tomography (CT). Macroscopically, the tumors were unilateral and solid, and the greatest dimension of the tumors was 3.5 and 8.0 cm, respectively. Histologicall

Basal Cell Carcinoma in the Nasal Vestibule.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is one of the most common human malignant neoplasms and is the most prevalent skin cancer in the United States with over four million new cases reported annually.1,2 Most BCCs arise in the skin from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. However, it is possible for BCCs to present in sun-protected areas due to factors other than sun exposure. We present a case of a basal cell carcinoma located in the nasal vestibule. In presenting this case, we would like to emphasize the importance of attentive full skin examinations, both by physicians and patients, tha

Surgical Excision of an Extratesticular Anaplastic Carcinoma in a Variable Kingsnake (Lampropeltis mexicana).

An adult male variable kingsnake (Lampropeltis mexicana) was presented for examination due to a three-week history of anorexia and obvious body deformities. On objective examination the animal was in poor condition, and on palpation, an intracoelomic mass was noted approximately in the distal third of the body, cranial to the cloaca. In agreement with the owner, an exploratory celiotomy was planned and performed and the mass was surgically removed. Modified Wright-Giemsa stain impression smears were taken, which were consistent with an undifferentiated tumour. Histological examination revealed

Clinical presentations and complications of lichen sclerosus: A systematic review.

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic, inflammatory dermatosis most commonly characterized by changes in skin pigmentation and pruritus, with associated dyspareunia and genital architectural changes. There are a variety of complications associated with LS, which further worsen a patient's health-related quality of life. A systematic review was conducted to summarize the literature regarding clinical features of LS, as well as LS-associated complications. In total, 900 studies were included, which represented 17,011 clinical presentations and 2,795 complications of LS in women, and 5,745 clinical

Transmissible venereal tumour with encephalic metastasis in dogs.

From January 2000 to December 2023 the Laboratory of Animal Pathology of the Federal University of Campina Grande received 6,218 canine autopsy and biopsy submissions, with six (0.09%) autopsy cases diagnosed as transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) with encephalic metastases. The mean age of affected dogs (four females and two males) was 7 years. Dogs were all from urban areas and were either semidomiciled (four cases) or stray (two cases). Clinical findings consisted of multilobular, ulcerated masses affecting the genital area (five cases) or skin (one case). Neurological signs were reported i

Paratesticular/inguinal SMARCB1/INI1 deficient carcinomas with yolk sac tumour-like differentiation are aggressive somatic malignancies.

AIMS: Extragonadal yolk sac tumour (YST) is rare, and may present a diagnostic challenge. YST differentiation was recently reported in some somatically derived tumours in the sinonasal location and in the female genital tract, together with a SMARCB1/INI1 loss. We report two paratesticular/inguinal tumours with striking morphological and immunohistochemical similarities with YST, further expanding the spectrum of extragonadal tumours with YST-like morphology and SMARCB1/INI1 loss. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients were 13- and 27-year-old males who presented with a 1-cm inguinal mass and a 4.6-cm

Human papillomavirus infection and cervical neoplasia: new perspectives.

This review addresses several problems associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the cervix and lower female genital tract. These include the definition of HPV infection and its distinction from HPV-associated neoplasia, the distinction of HPV infection from reactive epithelial changes induced by other infections, and the transmission of HPV infection via the male partner. The available evidence indicates that there are two distinct intraepithelial processes in the cervix associated with HPV. One is the classical condyloma and its counterpart in immature epithelium, atypical imma

Bowen's disease of the nipple in a young man with AIDS: a case report.

Bowen's disease, or squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS) of the skin, is a malignant neoplasm restricted to the epidermis, without evidence of dermal invasion. It usually develops in sun-exposed area of skin, but other sites can also be affected. Bowen's disease of the nipple is extremely rare and has thus far been reported only in women. We present the case of Bowen's disease of the nipple in an HIV-positive male patient who presented with a scaly lesion on nipple for one year. He also had past genital infection with human papillomavirus, but he was found to be negative for high-risk subty

Clear cell adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis in a male patient.

Carcinoma of the renal pelvis is an uncommon renal neoplasm. Clear cell adenocarcinoma in the urinary tract is rare and has a histomorphology resembling that of the female genital tract. We herein present a case of clear cell adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis, which is the first example in a male patient to our knowledge. A 54-year-old man presented with right flank pain. The tumor was associated with renal stones and hydronephrosis and invaded into the peripelvic fat tissue with regional lymph node metastasis. The patient died of metastatic disease six months postoperatively. Histologically,

Condyloma acuminatum in Rochester, Minn, 1950-1978. II. Anaplasias and unfavorable outcomes.

A total of 746 patients residing in Rochester, Minn, received the diagnosis of condyloma acuminatum between 1950 and 1978. Anaplasia was present in six and subsequently developed in 36 patients during follow-up examination in 42 patients (one male and 41 female). One had invasive squamous cell carcinoma (vulva), six had severe dysplasias, 21 had moderate to mild dysplasias, and 14 had carcinomas in situ (CIS), of which 11 were cervical. In the female patients, 37 of the anaplasias were cervical and the other four were vulval or vaginal. The 11 cervical CIS amounted to 3.8 times the expected nu

The Application and Pitfalls of Immunohistochemical Markers in Challenging Diagnosis of Genitourinary Pathology.

CONTEXT.—: The morphologic features of different entities in genitourinary pathology overlap, presenting a diagnostic challenge, especially when diagnostic materials are limited. Immunohistochemical markers are valuable when morphologic features alone are insufficient for definitive diagnosis. The World Health Organization classification of urinary and male genital tumors has been updated for 2022. An updated review of immunohistochemical markers for newly classified genitourinary neoplasms and their differential diagnosis is needed. OBJECTIVE.—: To review immunohistochemical markers used in

[Superficial angiomyxoma in the scrotum].

Superficial angiomyxoma is a benign neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that affects both sexes with a slight predilection for males. It can present in a solitary or multiple form, within the framework of the Carney complex, an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by the triad: cutaneous and cardiac myxomas, skin pigmentation and endocrine overactivity. They occur more commonly in the head and neck, trunk and lower limbs; the location in the genital region and particularly in the scrotum is very unusual. We report the case of a young patient who presented a nodular tumor in the right scrotum.

Subclinical thyroid disorders: the menace of the Trojan horse.

BACKGROUND: Progression of cutaneous squamous neoplasms from actinic keratosis (AK) to Bowen's disease (BD; squamous cell carcinoma in situ) has important implications for clinical management and treatment, thus requiring accurate diagnosis. p16INK4a is a cell cycle regulatory tumour suppressor protein that negatively regulates D-type cyclins in the G1 cell cycle phase via intimate interplay with the retinoblastoma gene. Expression of a paraffin-reactive p16INK4a marker has recently been shown to increase in cervical squamous neoplasms as lesions progress from low-grade dysplasia to squamous c

Recurrent GATA3 P409Afs*99 Frameshift Extension Mutations in Sweat-gland Carcinoma With Neuroendocrine Differentiation.

Sweat-gland carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation (SCAND) was recently proposed as a new cutaneous adnexal neoplasm with neuroendocrine differentiation; however, its genetics are not well known. Herein, we performed clinicopathologic and genetic analyses of 13 SCAND cases and 5 control cases of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC). The SCAND group included 11 males and 2 females with a median age of 68 years (range, 50 to 80 y). All SCAND lesions occurred in the ventral trunk or genital area. Of the 13 SCAND cases, 9 and 5 exhibited lymph node and distant metastases

Epidemiology of mucosal human papillomavirus infection and associated diseases.

This article describes the epidemiology of mucosal human papillomavirs (HPV) in adults and children, its mode of transmission and its associated diseases. Over 40 genotypes of HPV infect the epithelial lining of the anogenital tract and other mucosal areas of the body. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection globally, with high prevalences found in both females and males. The predominant route of transmission is via sexual contact, although mother-to-child transmission is also possible. HPV infection may exist asymptomatically or may induce the formation of benign or malignant tu

Cancer in the HIV/AIDS Population in Iowa, 1991-2015.

PURPOSE: As survival rates for individuals with HIV/AIDS diagnoses increase, cancer is becoming a more prevalent disease in this population. Data regarding the concurrent diagnoses of HIV/AIDS and cancer has not previously been examined and analyzed in the state of Iowa. METHODS: The Iowa Cancer Registry and Iowa Department of Public Health's HIV/AIDS surveillance databases were linked, and matches were identified. Characteristics of Iowans with HIV/AIDS later diagnosed with cancer between 1991 and 2015 were compared to Iowans without HIV/AIDS using proportional incidence ratios (PIRs). RESU

Rare coexistence of mediastinal hepatoid adenocarcinoma, idiopathic azoospermia and horseshoe kidney: a case report and review of the literature.

Hepatoid adenocarcinoma (HAC) is the term proposed for a special type of extrahepatic tumors, which is similar to the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) both in the histopathology and immunohistochemistry. HAC has been observed in the stomach, colon, pancreas, gall bladder, lung and female genital tract, but rarely in the mediastinum. Now we describe a case of a 28-year-old Chinese male with primary mediastinal HAC with lung and liver metastasis. In this patient, HAC was associated with horseshoe kidney and idiopathic nonobstructive azoospermia. It seemed derivation abnormalities during organogene
