Maternal death after cesarean section in Georgia.

Few reliable data exist on the risk of maternal death from cesarean section. To identify more deaths after cesarean section than reported by vital records alone, we linked data from Georgia resident live-birth certificates to those from death certificates of Georgia women aged 10 to 44 years. We found 16 maternal deaths after cesarean section in Georgia during 1975 and 1976, five more (45%) than the 11 reported through vital records alone. We attributed nine of these 16 deaths to the cesarean section per se. We than calculated a total death-to-case rate of 105.3 deaths per 100,000 cesarean sec

Medical aspects of atmosphere pollution in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Climate change and its impact on ecosystems is one of the main problem of 21st century. Increase in green house gas in the atmosphere was regarded as an important cause. Atmospheric composition had significantly changed due to intensive technogenic pollution. Increase in aerosol (solid, liquid and gas) concentration had serious impact on human health and raised the level of risk factors for longevity of life. Despite, global character of climatic change and its intensity in numerous ways was influenced by local specificity of regions, their geographical location and meteorological factors. A s

Personality Structure Among Centenarians: The Georgia Centenarian Study.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND/STUDY CONTEXT: We demonstrate that observer-rated factor structure of personality in centenarians is congruent with the normative structure. Prevalence of cognitive impairment, which has previously been linked to changes in personality in younger samples, is high in this age group, requiring observer ratings to obtain valid data in a population-based context. Likewise, the broad range of cognitive functioning necessitates synthesis of results across multiple measures of cognitive performance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 161 participants in the Georgia Centenarian Stu

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome: a case report from Georgia.

We report a 9 years and 6 month old boy with the Hallermann-Streiff syndrome (HSS). The patient was referred by a pediatrician. The diagnosis was established by endocrinologist based on the presence of specific facial gestalt (bird-like face) and bilateral congenital cataracts. The patient was not short, but had mild mental retardation; hypotrichosis was represented by Sign of Hertoghe (Queen Anne's sign) only. Thyroid function was normal. X-ray study yielded valuable data. The night apnoea (secondary to the dyscephalic narrowing of the upper airways) constituted the major concern. We also dis

Secrecy and risk among MSM in Tbilisi, Georgia.

There is concern that the tremendous economic, social, and political upheavals that the Republic of Georgia has undergone in the years since the fall of the Soviet Union may have created an environment fertile for HIV transmission. Notably absent from official statistics and HIV-related research in Georgia is discussion of men who have sex with men (MSM) and, therefore, little is known about the MSM population or its potential to acquire or transmit HIV. Data were collected from 30 MSM recruited through a testing and counseling center in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Two focus groups with s

Oral lesions in HIV-positive patients in Georgia.

To study the prevalence of oral lesions in HIV infected patients and its relationship with CD4+ cell count in Georgia 732 HIV positive adult patients who were admitted to the Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Research Center (IDACIRC) since January, 2006 till October, 2008 were evaluated. Each patient underwent full clinical and standard laboratory examination. CD4+ cell count was determined by the Becton-Dickinson FACSCalibur flow cytometer (MultiTEST CD3 FITC/CD8 PE/CD45 PerCP/CD4 APC Reagent). Socio-demographic data was obtained using a standard questionnaire at the epidemio

Postcranial evidence from early Homo from Dmanisi, Georgia.

The Plio-Pleistocene site of Dmanisi, Georgia, has yielded a rich fossil and archaeological record documenting an early presence of the genus Homo outside Africa. Although the craniomandibular morphology of early Homo is well known as a result of finds from Dmanisi and African localities, data about its postcranial morphology are still relatively scarce. Here we describe newly excavated postcranial material from Dmanisi comprising a partial skeleton of an adolescent individual, associated with skull D2700/D2735, and the remains from three adult individuals. This material shows that the postcra

Evaluating newborn screening program data systems--Georgia, 1998.

All 50 states and the District of Columbia conduct newborn screening (NBS) programs that annually screen approximately 4 million infants for metabolic and other disorders to prevent mental retardation, disability, and death. In 1998, Georgia newborns were screened for eight disorders: phenylketonuria, galactosemia, tyrosinemia, homocystinuria, hypothyroidism, maple syrup urine disease, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and sickle cell disease. Appropriate data that reflect progress toward achieving short- and long-term goals are necessary to assess the effectiveness of NBS and to inform public h

Flood-related mortality--Georgia, July 4-14, 1994.

On July 3, 1994, tropical storm Alberto struck the Florida panhandle with maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour. On July 4, as the center of the storm deteriorated over Columbus, Georgia, a cold front pushed through Alabama and southwestern Georgia from the northwest, producing warm, moist air and unstable weather resulting in heavy, prolonged thunderstorms. Rainfall totals in some areas of south central Georgia were 12-15 inches during a 24-hour period; Americus, Georgia, recorded 24 inches on July 6 (W. Zaleski, National Weather Service, personal communication, 1994). Several rivers,

Descriptive epidemiology of small intestinal atresia, Atlanta, Georgia.

To describe the epidemiology of small intestinal atresia (SIA) in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1968 through 1989, we used the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program, an active, population-based surveillance system for birth defects diagnosed during the first year of life. We identified 176 infants with SIA, a prevalence of 2.8 per 10,000 livebirths. Among black infants, the prevalence was 3.7 per 10,000 livebirths, significantly higher than the prevalence of 2.4 per 10,000 among white infants [relative risk (RR) = 1.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1,2.1]. Nine infants were each one memb

A Case of Ciguatera Fish Poisoning in South Georgia.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a seafood-associated non-infectious condition, caused by Ciguatoxins. It is known to be the most frequently reported cause of seafood-toxin-related illness in the world. CFP can cause a wide range of gastrointestinal, neurological, and cardiovascular symptoms which can last from a few days to a few months. We describe a case of ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in South Georgia after ingestion of a fish from the Caribbean Sea. This case report brings the attention of clinicians for early recognition of the condition and appropriate treatment.

Enhanced surveillance of norovirus outbreaks of gastroenteritis in Georgia.

OBJECTIVES: The role of noroviruses in both foodborne and person-to-person outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) has been difficult to determine in the U.S. because of lack of routine norovirus testing and of national reporting of person-to-person outbreaks. We conducted a prospective study in one state in which enhanced testing for noroviruses was performed to better understand the relative contribution of all gastroenteric pathogens. METHODS: During the two-year period, 2000-2001, we took all fecal specimens from AGE outbreaks reported in Georgia that were negative for bacteria and teste

Risk factors for relapse of visceral leishmaniasis in Georgia.

The number of relapses in patients treated for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has increased, thus identifying prognostic factors may aid decisions on treatment. Demographic and clinical information was abstracted from medical records of patients diagnosed and treated in Georgia from 2002 to 2004. The 300 persons with VL were primarily children <5 years (73.3%), and ∼44% had delays in diagnosis of more than 30 days from symptom onset. All patients received standard therapy with pentavalent antimony (20 mg/kg/day), most for 20-25 days. Factors significantly associated with VL relapse were delay in

Overview of referrals to mental health services in Georgia.

UNLABELLED: The prevalence of mental illnesses in society is difficult to measure accurately as current techniques are relatively poor. Mental health professionals argue that data provided by Ministry of Health of Georgia concerning the prevalence of mental illnesses should be treated with great caution as the official rates of mental disorders are likely to be largely underestimated. The most significant reason of this could be focusing on referral to state mental health institution and ignoring the private sector. In order to understand the gap between official data and real needs in mental
