[Quality assurance in cardiology: Germany].

Quality assurance is a touchy subject: difficult to implement, time-demanding and expensive. The goal of quality assurance is to assist both the patients and the physicians. In addition to legal requirements, quality assurance is necessary for medical as well as economical reasons. It makes sense that the license to practice medicine does not automatically entail the right to perform all medical procedures; the development of new methods and the insights won from important scientific studies necessitates constant training. Furthermore, the decreasing allocation of funds for medical care combin

[Rehabilitation in former East Germany].

The fundamentals of rehabilitation in the former GDR are described with particular reference to legal aspects. Interlinking of rehabilitation measures (medical, educational, occupational, social) was achieved by organisational structures on regional level (local rehabilitation centres, local rehabilitation committees) and by involving all levels of society, including employers (all the big companies worked on a nationalized basis). Difficulties are pointed out that resulted from political and ideological prejudices (children and adolescents not amenable to school education) and from inadequate

[Cardiogenetics in Germany- a view and review].

The development of the cardiogenetics field in Germany has been increasing since the mid-1990s with many national contributions, some of them were really important and groundbreaking. The starting point was and still is the patient and his family, e.g. with a familial form of arrhythmia or cardiomyopathy, the clarification of the genetic cause and the personalized treatment of those being affected. The scientific, always translationally oriented interest in identifying a causative gene and uncovering the underlying pathomechanisms has led to notable contributions for Brugada syndrome, short QT

METHOD: An online survey was performed using the validated Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI) by Eypasch et al. Ostomates ≥ 18 yrs. with an ostomy duration ≥ 3 months were eligible to participate. RESULTS: Completed questionnaires from 519 participants (79.3 % female) with a median age of 50 yrs. (range 19-83 yrs.) and a median ostomy duration of 3 yrs. (range 3 months-58 yrs.) were analyzed. The most common indicatio

Outcome of esophageal atresia in Germany.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of esophageal atresia in Germany in a retrospective observational study of a large cohort. Data from the major health insurance company in Germany, which covers approximately 30% of German patients, were analyzed. All patients born and registered between 2009 and 2013 with a diagnosis of esophageal atresia at first admission to the hospital were included. Mortality was analyzed during the first year of life. We identified 287 patients with esophageal atresia, including 253 with and 34 without tracheoesophageal fistula. Associated anomalies were

[Frequency of secondary tonsillectomy in Germany].

BACKGROUND: Tonsillar remnants are occasionally the subject of clinical negligence claims in tonsillectomy patients, but obligatory in every tonsillotomy procedure. In both cases, clinically relevant symptoms can require a secondary tonsillectomy (STE). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this retrospective longitudinal study was to identify the prevalence of STE in Germany between 2005 and 2018, using a report commissioned by the Federal Office for Statistics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: STE was identified using the operation and procedure key (Operationen- und Prozedurenschlüssel, OPS) code 5‑281.4, and

Economic burden of bronchiectasis in Germany.

Estimates of healthcare costs for incident bronchiectasis patients are currently not available for any European country.Out of a sample of 4 859 013 persons covered by German statutory health insurance companies, 231 new bronchiectasis patients were identified in 2012. They were matched with 685 control patients by age, sex and Charlson Comorbidity Index, and followed for 3 years.The total direct expenditure during that period per insured bronchiectasis patient was EUR18 634.57 (95% CI EUR15 891.02-23 871.12), nearly one-third higher (ratio of mean 1.31, 95% CI 1.02-1.68) than for a matched co

[On the economic burden of MRSA in Germany].

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) usually exhibits resistance not only against β-lactam antibiotics but also against other classes of antibiotics with the result that infections caused by this bacterium are difficult to treat. Due to additional morbidity and mortality a high economic burden can be expected. AIM: The aim of this study was to outline the cost effects caused by MRSA colonisation and infections and to quantify the annual economic burden in Germany by using published data in order to assess the costs due to MRSA in Germany. METHODS: Based on the available liter

[Epidemiology of Legionnaires' disease in Germany].

Legionnaires' disease (LD) is a severe form of pneumonia which is caused by bacteria of the genus Legionella. They are widespread in fresh water and can also colonize technical water systems where they might present an infection risk. Since 2001, notification of laboratory-confirmed LD is mandatory in Germany. From 2001-2009, a total of 3672 cases of LD were registered. During the first 7 years, case numbers increased (2001: 127; 2007: 536 cases) but have remained stable during the past 2 years (2008: 525; 2009: 503 cases). In 2009, 49.6% of cases were attributed to an infection in the communi

Anaplasma phagocytophilum in dogs in Germany.

A total number of 111 dogs were included in the present prospective study investigating the prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in dogs in Germany. Dogs were divided into two groups. Dogs of group 1 (n = 49) showed clinical and/or haematological signs seen in infections with A. phagocytophilum, whereas those of group 2 (n = 62) did not have any evidence of anaplasmosis. For each dog, an A. phagocytophilum 16S rRNA-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-anticoagulated whole blood analysis, a microscopic evaluation of a buffy coat and a serum indirec

The management of polytraumatized patients in Germany.

Polytrauma care in Germany is well organized and follows clear-cut demands: (1) to reduce the therapy-free interval, (2) to ensure qualified and sufficient preclinical treatment, (3) to minimize transportation time, and (4) to immediately transport the patient to an adequate level trauma center. These concepts include wide use of rescue helicopters that are based in 51 stations and cover the entire country. In addition, there is a countrywide system of emergency physician ambulances. All rescue forces are coordinated by special rescue coordination centers to ensure maximum efficacy. Specially
