Analysis of the outbreaks of food-borne infections and intoxications with a total of 2,610 patients in 1991 demonstrates that these cases were caused in 67.4% by Salmonella species. Eggs were mainly responsible for the outbreaks, whereas poor kitchen hygiene played also a main part in promoting disease.

Little work has been carried out on the epidemiology of the two serious skin reactions--toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). We collected details of all the hospitalized cases of TEN and SJS in the Federal Republic of Germany for the years 1981 through 1985 inclusive. Inquiries by telephone, letter, and personal visits produced an overall response of 91%; 259 cases of TEN and 315 cases of SJS were identified. Nine Italian and 12 German children fulfilled the criteria of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), according to the French-American-British (FAB) classification. All patients belonged to the more aggressive subtypes of myelodysplastic syndromes. To assess the risk of acquiring a West Nile virus (WNV) infection in Germany, we investigated samples from migrating and from resident birds. Because of their stay in or migration through WNV-endemic regions, these birds are at risk to become infected with WNV. BACKGROUND: Usutu virus (USUV) and West Nile virus (WNV) are zoonotic arthropod-borne orthoflaviviruses. The enzootic transmission cycles of both include Culex mosquitoes as vectors and birds as amplifying hosts. For more than 10 years, these viruses have been monitored in birds in Germany by a multidisciplinary network. While USUV is present nationwide, WNV used to be restricted to the central-east.
METHODS: In 2021 and 2022, over 2300 live bird blood samples and organs from over 3000 deceased birds were subjected to molecular and serological analysis regarding the presence of WNV and USUV.

Following a distinct summer heat wave, nine autochthonous cases of West Nile fever and West Nile neuroinvasive disease, including one fatality, were observed in Leipzig, Germany, in August and September 2020. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated close relationships in viruses from humans, animals and mosquitos in eastern Germany, obtained during the preceding 2 years. The described large cluster of autochthonous West Nile virus infections in Germany indicates endemic seasonal circulation of lineage 2 viruses in the area.
